There was an incident happen at Country Fair store 55 in Meadville where a man brought a little girl into the store and somehow while a female employee and a female customer were talking to the girl they found out that she had been adducted. They managed to call the police and keep the man there until the police arrived and arrested him. The parents of the child went to the store to give the employees flowers.

US Airways backtracked on their service cuts to Erie International Airport. The 3 Pittsburgh to Erie flights will be cut to 1 in July. Now they’re saying that service should be restored in August.

Newsweek released their list of top US public high schools. Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy was ranked number 225. The ranking were based on the number of Advanced Placement, Intl Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2006 divided by the number of graduating seniors.

The lingering blood shortage that is affecting our region continues. The approaching holiday weekend is normally one of the three worst weekends of the year for the blood supply. The Community Blood Bank is appealing to the public for people to come in and donate blood. The blood bank is open on Thursday and Friday until 6 pm and on Saturday morning from 9-12:30 pm. The blood bank is closed on Monday. All donors are strongly encouraged to donate at the Community Blood Bank, 2646 Peach Street. Community Blood Bank is open from 9 am - 6 pm Monday through Friday and until 7:30pm Tuesday night and Saturday 9a.m.-12:30 p.m. Photo ID required.

The Photomedia Center announced a Call for Artists for their 2007 Open Juried Exhibition. Open to all artists internationally working in any photographic media-including collage, digital, traditional and alternative processes, and new media. There is no restriction on subject matter. Selected works will be exhibited online at the Photomedia Center during the month of September 2007. Five Juror’s Awards will be exhibited at Glass Growers Gallery in Erie, Pennsylvania. The Photomedia Center will select one work as its Purchase Award, which will be added to its permanent collection. One artist from the show will be selected for a solo featured exhibit at the Photomedia Center during its 2008 season. Accepted works may be offered for sale by the artists during the show. Juror: Deb Vahanian, Glass Growers Gallery. Artists may submit up to 10 pieces by CD only (no slides or prints) for consideration. Entry fee is $5 per image; early entry is $3 per image if entry is received by May 31, 2007. Entry fees are waived entirely for current Photomedia Center members. Payment can be made by check, money order, or by credit card electronically via paypal. The acceptable file formats should be either JPEG or TIFF only. Please label images clearly with the work’s title or provide a separate list clearly referencing image titles by number. Files must be no larger than 800 pixels on the image’s longest side at 72 ppi. The Georgia Aquarium celebrated a new milestone Wednesday when its 5 millionth guest walked through the doors. Amy Warner and Dawn Zimmerman, nurses from Erie PA, were greeted by Aquarium benefactor Bernie Marcus and a package of prizes. Warner and Zimmerman were visiting the Aquarium while in Atlanta for an American Association of Critical Care Nurses convention.

The Erie SeaWolves blew a 7-0 9th inning lead and lost to the Harrisburg Senators 8-7 in 10 innings. The two teams meet in the final game of the five-game set on Thursday afternoon…12:05 first pitch. LHP Andrew Miller (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his second start of the season for Erie and he will be opposed by RHP Jim Magrane (1-3, 5.79 ERA).

Mercyhurst head men’s ice hockey coach Rick Gotkin released his 2007-08 schedule. 2007 national champion Michigan State (CCHA) is on the schedule for the first time along with 2007 national semifinalist Maine (Hockey East), and nationally-ranked Michigan Tech (WCHA). The Lakers begin regular season play at the prestigious Lefty McFadden Invitational at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. The `Lefty’ is an NCAA exempt tournament, meaning all the statistics count, but the contests are not factored into a team’s 34-game limit. All of the non-conference opponents will have a number of National Hockey League draftees on their respective rosters.

Duquesne University men’s cross country coach Jim Lear announced the signing of Michael Stolar (Erie, Pa/ Mercyhurst Prep).

Gannon University will host a free seminar designed to help veterans interested in starting their own businesses. The seminar, From Service to Success, will run from 7:30 am to 3 pm today, Thursday, May 24 in the Yehl Room of the Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street. It also is targeted at veterans who already own a business, and is sponsored by the Gannon Small Business Development Center and Paulsen Productions. With a focus on veterans, the seminar is being held in recognition of Memorial Day so that those who served their country can learn more about the resources available to help them succeed in business. Richard Ramirez, president and founding director of the United States Association of Veterans in Business, will give the keynote address. The 2007 Memorial Day Shootout will be held at the host venue of Family First Sports Park in Erie PA, May 26-28. Over 150 teams are expected. The Memorial Day Shootout is for premier soccer teams ages U9-U19 and is among the top college recruiting tournaments. The tournament will feature some of the best boys and girls soccer teams in the United States and Canada. This is a US CLUB Soccer event. USYSA teams are permitted to participate.

The annual Edinboro University Sports Memorabilia Auction will be held May 30 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Erie. Admission is $5. Among memorabilia being offered are autographed jerseys by Dan Marino, Jerome Bettis, Bob Sanders, Jim Kelly and Grant Hill; autographed footballs by Carson Palmer, Gale Sayers, Bettis and Antonio Gates; autographed photos by Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby, Terry Bradshaw, Brett Favre, Steve Young, Arnold Palmer and Troy Aikman; and autographed baseballs by Sandy Koufax and Freddie Sanchez.

North East senior citizens can learn how to keep their minds healthy at “Brain Health for Wise Minds,” a luncheon seminar presented by nationally recognized speaker and author Dr. Linda Rhodes, on Thursday, May 31, at the North East Senior Center, 50 E Main St, North East. The event, sponsored by the Hirtzel Institute on Aging and Health Education at Mercyhurst North East, is open to all area seniors and includes a free lunch. The seminar will begin at 10:30 am, with lunch to follow. Reservations are required by May 28 by calling 725-5195.

Lake Erie Speedway and the Erie Runners Club are teaming up to host the 6k Run and Walk and 1/2 Mile Youth Race on June 2, 2007 to benefit the St Martins Center. This highly charged event will begin with a 1/2 mile youth race, which will take place around the oval racetrack. Immediately after the youth race, the 6k race will begin at the entrance of Lake Erie Speedway on Delmas Drive. The first leg of the race will be run on a hard packed dirt road. Runners will then make a square loop around the Speedway property on paved roads making their way back onto the oval and ending at the track’s start/finish line. This event will mark the first time the Erie Runners Club comes to the speedway. While there, runners can visit exhibit booths from Saint Vincent Hospital, St Martin Center, Erie Federal Credit Union, Point Click Learn and more. Runners will also get to stay at Lake Erie Speedway that night, for a full night of NASCAR Whelen Championship Racing. Prices are $20 for the 6k run, $10 for the youth ½ mile run, and $10 for a non-race participant.

Camp Notre Dame is holding an open house on Sunday June 3 from 1-4 pm. Camp Notre Dame offers day and overnight camping for ages 4-16.

Penn State Behrend’s popular College for Kids returns this summer with over 150 weeklong classes to educate, entertain, and inspire young people ages 6 to 18. College for Kids courses begin June 11 and continue through August 10, with the exception of Fourth of July week. Classes are organized by age and held during morning or afternoon sessions, with before- and after-care available for an additional fee. Returning classes include past favorites in guitar, golf, knitting, word processing, PowerPoint, model rocketry, acting, sign language, and scrap booking instruction; World War II history, “Engineering MythBusters,” and “Dinosaur Discovery.” New courses this year: “Storm Chasing 101” taught by WJET-TV meteorologist Tom Atkins; two finance classes, “Kids and Money” for the younger student and “Show Me the Money” for teens; “Let’s Cheer,” “Conversational Spanish,” “Introduction to Chess,” “Star Wars and the Roman Empire,” “Crafts from the Beach,” “Space Camp: Return to the Moon,” and an investigation of the paranormal called “X-Files.” “We also have a very special opportunity this year for kids ages 12 to 18—a chance to paint a mural on the fountain in Perry Square under the direction of local artist AJ Noyes,” Mary Trott, College for Kids program coordinator, noted. “Because of the significance of this community service project, this will be one of the rare College for Kids classes that meets for a full day.” Perry Square fountain painting will take place the week of July 23. For artists not old enough to participate in the mural project or unable to commit to a full-day class, Noyes also will teach College for Kids courses in hand-sewing and beading, craft painting, nature drawing and painting, and portrait drawing. Costs vary by course but start at $70 per weeklong class. Before- or after-class supervision is available for an additional $10 per week. A provocative evening of poetry and dance will celebrate the release of a new book by a faculty member in the BFA in Creative Writing program at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Lecturer in English and performance poet Sean Thomas Dougherty will collaborate with modern dancer Shelly Walker to premier readings from his latest collection, Broken Hallelujahs (Boa Editions, 2007). The event will take place at 8 pm Friday, June 15, at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State St, and is free and open to the public.

The Counting Crows, Live and Collective Soul will play a concert at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA on July 31 as part of “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Triple Play Ballpark Tour.” Tickets go on sale June 2 at 10 am. Tickets can be purchased at the SeaWolves box office at Jerry Uht Park and on SeaWolves.com. Children under 12 get in FREE with each paid adult ticket holder.
