Richard J Cook, president of Allegheny College, will be among the panelists at a June 6th discussion on the legendary Brooklyn Dodgers president Branch Rickey. The discussion of Rickey’s life will open the 19th annual Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture in New York. The annual Cooperstown Symposium, co-sponsored by the State University of New York at Oneonta and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, examines baseball’s impact on American culture from multidisciplinary perspectives. Rickey’s contributions to American society are being celebrated on the 60th anniversary of his signing of Jackie Robinson, who became major league baseball’s first African-American player in the 20th century. For 50 years one of baseball’s greatest front office executives, Rickey is credited with the invention of the modern minor league farm system. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967. Rickey coached baseball and football at Allegheny College from 1904 to 1905. He returned to Allegheny in 1955, during his tenure as the general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, to help mediate a dispute that arose when the national chapter of Delta Tau Delta suspended Allegheny’s chapter because Allegheny brothers had accepted two Jewish members into the fraternity. Delta Tau Delta was Rickey’s fraternity when he attended Ohio Wesleyan University. Rickey also visited Allegheny when he was awarded an honorary degree in 1951 and when he participated in the dedication of the Andrew Wells Robertson Athletic Field in 1962.
