Erie PA News and Events for Wednesday June 6, 2007
Jenna Walker and Maggie Kovski died tragically when they drowned in a pond. I thought it was heartless that police were investigating the babysitter. I thought they should just put the poor 19 year old babysitter on suicide watch. I was wrong. Police charged Brittany Steward with two counts each of involuntary manslaughter, endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person. Steward had drank beer all the previous night and had just come home when she began babysitting. She told the 911 dispatcher one thing and the police another. Steward even posted details of what happened on her Facebook page. She is currently being held in the Erie County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
Excellent job by Craig Layne at WJET-TV digging up the Facebook details. Steward at least now has her profile set on private but still has an invitation Jenna Walker’s funeral posted.
Condolences to Simsa on passing of her Father.
Congratulations to Dana and Ross on the birth of their daughter.

At a Meadville-Western Crawford County Chamber of Commerce breakfast, Allegheny College president Richard J Cook released the results of a study detailing Allegheny College’s economic impact on Crawford County. A key finding of the study is that Allegheny’s impact on the Crawford County economy was roughly $93.1 million in the year studied. The 62-page study - which is unusual because of the rigor of its approach, which allows others to reproduce the results — found that in addition to 500 individuals directly employed by the college, another 1,031 of the jobs in the county were sustained as a result of the college’s expenditures. This implies that Allegheny accounted for one out of every 40 jobs in the county. Also of significance were the tax implications of the college’s presence in the community. Afrasiabi and Onyeiwu projected that the college and its employees contributed an estimated $845,530 in property taxes to the county, city and three regional school districts and $195,740 in income taxes to the City of Meadville. College related transactions generated an additional $1.4 million in taxes, bringing the college’s total tax impact to around $2.7 million for 2004-2005. In addition, 800 Allegheny graduates resided in the county, earning an estimated $35 million annually. The study also estimates that alumni visitors to the county spent $2.7 million, parents of current students spent about $2.1 million and families of prospective students spent approximately $786,000.
Ben Franklin Venture Investment Forum and Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern PA announced the winner of their annual $35,000 BIG IDEA Business Plan Contest. The competition, which was held May 31, 2007, at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center located in State College, allowed seven finalists to make a business plan presentation to a panel of judges. The winner of the $35,000 prize, 317 Software, LLC, a KIZ Erie Company developed iDropper, a trademarked program designed to simplify digital file transfer across the Internet. Dave Scribner and Matt Mashyna, co-founders of the company commented, “Our software is specifically for businesses that need to eliminate the technical hurdles typically associated with the transfer of a large number of digital files. It’s as easy as drag and drop.” The primary target for the iDropper program is the commercial printing prepress industry. Currently for a printer to receive digital files, they must either risk overloading their server to receive them as email, wait for a CD-ROM to arrive in the mail, or teach their customers how to access their server. The iDropper solutions shortens the production cycle, removes the security risk of allowing access to your server, and saves time and money for both the printer and the customer.
