Kia, an 11 year old Amur leopard from the Erie Zoo, is now at the Oregon Zoo. She made her public debut yesterday. The Erie Zoo has a full house of Amur leopards and the Oregon Zoo’s 16 year old Amur Fredrick was lonely. They will not be bred.
Phillip Tredway has been elected to the board of Northwest Bancorp, Inc (Nasdaq: NWSB), the parent company of Northwest Savings Bank. Tredway is President and CEO of Erie Molded Plastics in Erie, Pennsylvania. He founded the company in April 1982. Erie Molded Plastics specializes in the production of close tolerance plastic parts for industries including house wares, pharmaceutical, medical, electronic, computer, cosmetics, and lawn and garden equipment.
The news about boxer Paul ‘The Pittsburgh Kid’ Spadafora being back in prison was covered by ESPN, USA Today, The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, and newspapers all over the world. I didn’t see a mention of it in the local sports section, just a small article in the news section.
The Erie SeaWolves could not withstand a six-run first inning by New Hampshire on Friday night as they fell to the Fisher Cats 8-4. Erie meets New Hampshire in game two of a three-game set on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park in Erie…7:05 First Pitch. RHP Jeff Gerbe makes his Double-A debut for the ‘Wolves and he is opposed by LHP Kurt Isenberg.
The Erie Illusion women’s football team host the Michigan Spitfire on Saturday June 9 at 7 pm at Tullio Field on the campus of Mercyhurst College.
Mercyhurst College’s David Lough was selected in the Major League Baseball 2007 Draft by the Kansas City Royals in the 11th round. The center fielder, who was the 336th overall pick, becomes the first Laker drafted into the pros since Nate Goodrich in 2000 and the ninth Mercyhurst player overall in program history. He is the highest player drafted in school history, surpassing Pat Cutshall’s 17th round selection in the 1997 draft.
Brian Espersen tossed a no-hitter for the Florence RedWolves of the Coastal Plains League, making it the second year in a row the team received a no-hit performance from a Mercyhurst College pitcher. Espersen joins John Mang, who threw a no-no against Wilmington last summer. Espersen is not the only Laker playing for the RedWolves. Joe Luli had three RBI in the game. David Lough, who has two homers throught the first six games, batted cleanup and had one hit. Dan Bertolini added a pinch single late in the contest.
Garret Piispanen won the Dan Peterson Memorial Mile held in Fruita, Colorado. Piispanen is a member of the cross country and track and field teams at Allegheny College.
2007 Mercyhurst graduate Brendan Flood has received a sponsors’ exemption to compete in the Peek’n’Peak Classic June 28 through July 1 as part of the Nationwide Tour. Flood will compete as an amateur at the tournament and all four rounds will be televised on the Golf Channel.
The Erie Society for Genealogical Research, 417 State Street, Erie, PA, is holding a “Harvesting Your Heritage Genealogical Conference” on Saturday, June 9, from 9 am to 4 pm at Blasco’s H O Hirt Auditorium. Three nationally known speakers, Dick Eastman of Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter, Stephen Morse, creator of the OneStep search tools including Ellis Island Search in One Step, and James Beidler, author of many books and articles on Pennsylvania and German genealogy, and Commonwealth Speaker for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, will each offer lectures including something for all levels of family researchers. The 2007 Hamot Sports Medicine Edinboro Triathlon will be held today at 9 am. The course will take participants throughout a scenic, country-side tour of Edinboro, Pennsylvania. It includes a .75 Mile Swim, a 23.6 Mile Bike, and a 6.2 Mile Run course. The Hamot Sports Medicine Edinboro Triathlon is a non-profit event. All proceeds will be used first to cover expenses of the event. All funds remaining will directly benefit local non-profit service groups and projects including, in part, the Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department.

Skate Erie needs volunteers for an hour or two on Sunday. They will be distributing flyers around the neighborhood of Baldwin Park beginning at 11 am. The flyer is to inform the neighborhood of town hall meeting at Blessed Sacrament on Wed June 13 at 7 pm. They need a yes from the neighbors to move ahead on building the skate park.
The Erie Art Museum’s Contemporary Music Series will present jazz duo Billy Bang and Kahil El’ Zabar at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State Street on Monday, June 11 at 8 pm. Admission is $12 for general admission, $10 for Erie Art Museum and Jazz Erie members and $6 for students and seniors.
Penn State Behrend’s popular College for Kids returns this summer with over 150 weeklong classes to educate, entertain, and inspire young people ages 6 to 18. College for Kids courses begin June 11 and continue through August 10, with the exception of Fourth of July week. Classes are organized by age and held during morning or afternoon sessions, with before- and after-care available for an additional fee. Returning classes include past favorites in guitar, golf, knitting, word processing, PowerPoint, model rocketry, acting, sign language, and scrap booking instruction; World War II history, “Engineering MythBusters,” and “Dinosaur Discovery.” New courses this year: “Storm Chasing 101” taught by WJET-TV meteorologist Tom Atkins; two finance classes, “Kids and Money” for the younger student and “Show Me the Money” for teens; “Let’s Cheer,” “Conversational Spanish,” “Introduction to Chess,” “Star Wars and the Roman Empire,” “Crafts from the Beach,” “Space Camp: Return to the Moon,” and an investigation of the paranormal called “X-Files.” “We also have a very special opportunity this year for kids ages 12 to 18—a chance to paint a mural on the fountain in Perry Square under the direction of local artist AJ Noyes,” Mary Trott, College for Kids program coordinator, noted. “Because of the significance of this community service project, this will be one of the rare College for Kids classes that meets for a full day.” Perry Square fountain painting will take place the week of July 23. For artists not old enough to participate in the mural project or unable to commit to a full-day class, Noyes also will teach College for Kids courses in hand-sewing and beading, craft painting, nature drawing and painting, and portrait drawing. Costs vary by course but start at $70 per weeklong class. Before- or after-class supervision is available for an additional $10 per week. The 19th annual Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon Event takes place June 14 to 17 at Robertson Soccer Field on the campus of Allegheny College in Meadville PA.
A provocative evening of poetry and dance will celebrate the release of a new book by a faculty member in the BFA in Creative Writing program at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Lecturer in English and performance poet Sean Thomas Dougherty will collaborate with modern dancer Shelly Walker to premier readings from his latest collection, Broken Hallelujahs (Boa Editions, 2007). The event will take place at 8 pm Friday, June 15, at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State St, and is free and open to the public.

Darren Williams, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host a Summer Open House Night in Astronomy event at the college on Wednesday, June 27. Williams’ lecture, “What is a Planet? Why Not Pluto?” will begin at 8:30 pm in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building, and will be followed by astronomical viewing from the college’s Mehalso Observatory, weather permitting. Williams’ lecture and telescope viewing are intended for a non-technical audience, and are open to the public free of charge.
