Chytoria Graham was granted a request to withdraw her guilty plea by Judge Rusty Cunningham. Graham had pleaded guilty back in March but Cunningham wasn’t convinced she knew what she was doing. I think he just didn’t to see her change her mind in a couple of months. Graham used her 1 month old baby like a baseball bat to strike her boyfriend. He is facing aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child charges.

Bath Iron Works is being awarded a $197,071,953 cost reimbursement type modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-06-C-2303) for DDG 1000 Zumwalt Class Destroyer long lead material, and pre-production planning to support detail design and construction. Four percent of the work will be done in Erie PA. This is the second contract to be granted to a company or companies in Erie for this project. Just a guess but one might be Erie Forge and Steel as they have done propeller shafts in the past.

Hybrid cars - good. Hybrid animals - bad. Richard Staub of Wattsburg was cited by the Pennsylvania Game Commission for having a wolf-dog hybrid. The animal broke free and bite someone.

Some of the top science students in Erie and Crawford Counties are attending the annual Medical Applications to Science and Health program at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie this week. Known by its initials, MASH, the 2007 program has enrolled 21 students from Mercyhurst Preparatory, Villa Maria, and Conneaut Lake High Schools. MASH provides an opportunity for these students to take a closer look at medical education and the practice of medicine. The program brings together high school students with LECOM medical students and faculty for a challenging week of science education. Hershey S Bell, LECOM Associate Dean of Faculty Development serves as the MASH program director.

The Municipal Police Training Academy at Mercyhurst North East (MNE) is currently accepting applications for its next academy, which begins July 30. MNE’s Police Training Academy is one of only 16 certified academies in the state where individuals can earn Act 120 certification, required for many law enforcement jobs, including municipal police work. During the 21-week training, cadets learn patrol and arrest procedures, Pennsylvania laws, defense tactics, criminal investigation and courtroom procedures, crisis management, report writing, and also receive training in firearms, first aid and CPR. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license, and must pass all admissions requirements. The Erie SeaWolves today begin a three-game series at Portland. RHP Eddie Bonine (4-3, 4.19) takes the mound in game one against RHP Charlie Zink (5-1, 2.35 ERA).

The Mercyhurst College men’s water polo program will welcome five new student-athletes announced by head coach Curtis Robinette. Among the `Hurst’s 2007 recruiting class is a member of the Canadian Junior National Team (Alex Moggridge) and two players coming off All-American seasons (Alex Perry and Andrew Sekulski).

Penn State Behrend continues its 2007 summer camp schedule with soccer camp and boys’ basketball camp from June 18 to June 22 and the girls’ basketball shootout on June 16 and 17. Behrend boys’ basketball camp is directed by Behrend men’s basketball coach Dave Niland. The camp is open to boys ages 7 to 15, and will take place in the Junker Center gym. Behrend soccer camp is directed by men’s soccer coach Dan Perritano and women’s soccer coach Patrick O’Driscoll. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 13, and will take place at the Behrend Fields. The Behrend girls’ basketball shootout is a team camp directed by women’s basketball coach Roz Fornari. The camp will take place June 16 and 17 in the Junker Center gym. Penn State Behrend offers a full slate of sports camps all summer long. Get ready for another summer of great concerts down on the beach. The Sprint Sunset Music Series returns for 2007 with an excellent line-up of performers. All concerts will be held on Wednesdays on Beach 1 beginning at 6:30 pm. A food and beverage vendor will be available for delicious snacks to enjoy during the show. The Duke Sherman Blues Band performs their free concert on June 13.

The second Erie Downtown Thursday Night Block Party of the season takes place Thursday June 14 at 7 pm on the 1300 block of State Street in front of Calamari’s Squid Row and The papermoon Restaurant. Music by Midnight Riders and Jimmy 13. The event is FREE. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

The 19th annual Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon Event takes place June 14 to 17 at Robertson Soccer Field on the campus of Allegheny College in Meadville PA.

A provocative evening of poetry and dance will celebrate the release of a new book by a faculty member in the BFA in Creative Writing program at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Lecturer in English and performance poet Sean Thomas Dougherty will collaborate with modern dancer Shelly Walker to premier readings from his latest collection, Broken Hallelujahs (Boa Editions, 2007). The event will take place at 8 pm Friday, June 15, at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State St, and is free and open to the public.

The 2007 Erie Summer Festival of the Arts will take place Friday through Sunday, June 22-24. This is a FREE event and open to the public. It will again be held at Liberty Park on the Erie Bayfront. The theme will be “You Gotta Have Arts.”

Darren Williams, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host a Summer Open House Night in Astronomy event at the college on Wednesday, June 27. Williams’ lecture, “What is a Planet? Why Not Pluto?” will begin at 8:30 pm in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building, and will be followed by astronomical viewing from the college’s Mehalso Observatory, weather permitting. Williams’ lecture and telescope viewing are intended for a non-technical audience, and are open to the public free of charge. Eight Great Tuesday’s is a free concert series on Tuesday nights at the Pepsi Amphitheatre inside Liberty Park. The summer Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, begins Thursday, July 12, with a performance by Japanese carillonneur Toru Takao. The following Thursday, July 19, the featured musicians will be the duo Ana and Sara Elias, Portugese sisters who perform under the name Lvsitanvs. Tin-Shi Tam, university carillonneur at Iowa State, will close the series on Thursday, July 26. All three performances will begin at 7 pm, and are free and open to the public. Seating is on the lawn of the John M Lilley Library, so concert goers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Refreshments will be served.

The Counting Crows, Live and Collective Soul will play a concert at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA on July 31 as part of “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Triple Play Ballpark Tour.” Tickets go on sale June 2 at 10 am. Tickets can be purchased at the SeaWolves box office at Jerry Uht Park and on SeaWolves.com. Children under 12 get in FREE with each paid adult ticket holder.

The Motorcycle, Car, Boat and Truck show called the Lake Erie Classic will be held August 3-5 at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field.

I have been told Erie Shipbuilding is the other company to be awarded a contract for the DDG 1000.
