Boxer Paul ‘The Pittsburgh Kid’ Spadafora waived his right to a preliminary hearing for a parole violation and will remain jailed at the State Correctional Institution at Albion. Spadafora was arrested May 30 in Erie after filing a PFA against Nadine Russo, who then accused him of assaulting her. Spadafora and Crystal Dawn Conner got a marriage license at the Erie County Courthouse just days before. Conner has 2 daughters with Spadafora while Russo has a son with him. Spadafora has been living and training in Erie since he got out of prison for shooting Russo. He has a professional boxing record of 40-0-1 and would be filthy rich is he wasn’t such a head case.

The rumors have been flying around town for a week and today John Dudley of the ETN reports that Gannon University and Mercyhurst College might leave the GLIAC and join the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The PSAC might not be a perfect fit but it’s tons better than the Michigan based Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

City of Erie Police last night caught 15 children violating the curfew ordinance. First time offenders were issued written warnings. Second time offenders were issued citations. During school breaks kids have to be home midnight to 6 am. Exceptions are made for kids that work, attend night classes, sporting or other community events.

Rebecca L (Becca) Martin will be the new president/ CEO of the Ludington/Scottville Michigan Area Chamber of Commerce. Martin will move to the area from Erie, Pa, where she has served as vice president for the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership for the past four years. She also served as director of marketing, communications and government relations for the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority. Her education includes graduation from Mercyhurst College, with honors, and a master’s degree from Gannon University.

GE Transportation’s stationary power business in Erie announced it is supplying Petrofac International, Ltd., Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, with five diesel generator sets that will provide standby power for a Kuwait Oil Company gathering center. The diesel engines were manufactured at GE’s engine facility in Grove City, Pa. The four GE 12V228 diesel gensets, each rated at 2 megawatts continuous, and one GE 16V228 genset, rated at 2.5 megawatts continuous, will be used as part of a major $750 million upgrade project at a Kuwait Oil Company gathering center.

Advertising Advantage of Jamestown NY announced aggressive growth plans, including installing a minimum of 81 new billboards over the next 12 months and expanding its service area North towards Buffalo, as well as add to the Erie, Pa market. The new billboards will be either digital or tri-vision boards. Advertising Advantage’s first two digital billboards, located in Erie, Pa, were installed in late May. Advertising space was sold out before installation and there currently is a growing waiting list to advertise on the boards.

School might be out for area high schools, but some soon-to-be high school seniors are getting a seven-week jumpstart on their futures with the annual Minority College Experience/Women in Science and Engineering (MCE/WISE) program at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Thirty-nine students from 10 area high schools, including Collegiate Academy, Corry, East, Fairview, General McLane, Harbor Creek, Iroquois, Seneca, Strong Vincent and Villa Maria, are participating in these free college and career-preparation courses, which continue through July 27.

Millcreek Elementary School Tracy was announced as one of this year’s recipients of the Saint Vincent Auxiliary Educational Grant. With this grant the local elementary school will be installing a program entitled: “It’s Fun to be Fit” The program is designed to create an awareness of practical skills in nutrition, personal health and physical fitness. The ultimate goal of the program is for the students to become “health ambassadors” and then taking the learned skills to their home environment. The Saint Vincent Auxiliary has been awarding local area schools with these grants for the last eighteen years.

The U S Brig Niagara will return to Toledo July 28 as part of a fund drive to benefit the SS Willis B Boyer museum ship. The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority took responsibility for the Boyer after the city said it couldn’t afford to fund the ship because of its current budget crisis. Just 2,500 people toured the Boyer last year.

To celebrate Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club 20th anniversary of their partnership with Children’s Miracle Network, the company pledged to raise $10 million nationwide during the month of May. Saint Vincent Health Center is the premier Children’s Miracle Network hospital. Locally, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club raised more than $41,000 in May. Every dollar raised in our community stays right here at Saint Vincent. These dollars help to purchase life-saving equipment for the tiniest babies as well as provide educational and safety programs for older children.

The Erie SeaWolves won their third consecutive ballgame on Wednesday night, downing the Portland Sea Dogs 6-0 at Hadlock Field. Starting pitcher Andrew Kown (2-3) picked up his first win of the season as a starter. Kown went five shutout innings allowing just four hits. He walked one and struck out six. A pair of relievers in Randor Bierd and Matt Rush combined to throw the final four shutout innings. The SeaWolves and Sea Dogs meet for the final time during the regular season on Thursday night at Hadlock Field…6:00 First Pitch. RHP Dallas Trahern (8-2, 3.27 ERA) takes the mound and looks to rebound from a rough outing his last time out. Trahern will be opposed by Sea Dogs ace, RHP Clay Buchholz (3-2, 1.56 ERA).

Recent Major League Baseball draft picks David Lough and Brian Espersen, both of Mercyhurst College, signed their first professional contracts this week. Lough, an 11th round pick, signed with the Kansas City Royals organization, while Espersen heads to the Houston Astros organization after being selected in the 18th round. Lough is expected to join Burlington (NC) of the Advanced Rookie Appalachian League. Espersen will begin his career with Tri-Cities (NY) of the New York-Penn League, a Class A Short Season circuit. Both teams begin their seasons on June 19.

The second Erie Downtown Thursday Night Block Party of the season takes place Thursday June 14 at 6 pm on the 1300 block of State Street in front of Calamari’s Squid Row and The papermoon Restaurant. Music by Midnight Riders and Jimmy 13. The event is FREE. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

The 19th annual Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon Event takes place June 14 to 17 at Robertson Soccer Field on the campus of Allegheny College in Meadville PA.

The 83rd annual Lake City Fire Company Carnival takes place June 14 to 16 at 2232 Rice Ave in Lake City, PA.

A provocative evening of poetry and dance will celebrate the release of a new book by a faculty member in the BFA in Creative Writing program at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Lecturer in English and performance poet Sean Thomas Dougherty will collaborate with modern dancer Shelly Walker to premier readings from his latest collection, Broken Hallelujahs (Boa Editions, 2007). The event will take place at 8 pm Friday, June 15, at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State St, and is free and open to the public.

The Gem City Concert Band’s annual Spring Concert will be held on Tuesday, June 19th from 7:30 to 9:00 pm at St. John’s Lutheran Church Parish Center Auditorium on Peach and 23rd. The 45-member band, under the direction of Betty McKinney and Assistant Director Brett Woomer, will perform such pieces as Lieutenant F J Ricketts’ Colonel Bogey March from the 1957 film Bridge on the River Kwai; LeRoy Anderson’s Bugler’s Holiday, a trumpet trio feature; and Dimitri Shostakovitch’s Festive Overture. Special guests for the evening will be Bridge City Brass, a brass ensemble from Pittsburgh that will premier several new arrangements composed by ensemble members.
The GC Concert Band will also offer a similar program for Corry’s Thursdays in the Park Concert Series on Thursday June 21st at the Corry City Park Gazebo from 7:30-9:00 pm. Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to enjoy the outdoor performance.

The 2007 Erie Summer Festival of the Arts will take place Friday through Sunday, June 22-24. This is a FREE event and open to the public. It will again be held at Liberty Park on the Erie Bayfront. The theme will be “You Gotta Have Arts.”

Measuring up to the nonprofit management challenges of the future will the order of the day as leaders in the field examine the major trends that will impact life in the nonprofit world. The Nonprofit Partnership presents Erie’s 2007 Nonprofit Leadership Forum “Engage The Future” featuring keynote speaker, Bill Croasmun, a futurist with Social Technologies, Inc. Social Technologies is a global research and consulting firm, specializing in the integration of foresight, strategy and innovation. Darren Williams, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host a Summer Open House Night in Astronomy event at the college on Wednesday, June 27. Williams’ lecture, “What is a Planet? Why Not Pluto?” will begin at 8:30 pm in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building, and will be followed by astronomical viewing from the college’s Mehalso Observatory, weather permitting. Williams’ lecture and telescope viewing are intended for a non-technical audience, and are open to the public free of charge. The Erie Downtown Bike Nights will be held June 29 and August 31.

As part of the Erie Summer-Long Jazz Festival, the Gem City Jazz Ensemble will present a free jazz concert for the entire family on June 30th from 6:30 to 8:15 at the Blasco Library’s H O Hirt Auditorium. Parents are encouraged to bring the kids to the show to learn about and experience jazz firsthand! The first half hour of the program will feature familiar children’s songs with a jazz flare, including the Hokey Pokey, Theme From Sesame Street, and Mickey Mouse. After a brief intermission, a one-hour jazz concert will be performed for the entire family, featuring such charts as Sidewinder, When You’re Smiling, New York New York, and Corner Pocket. This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Blasco Library.

Mercyhurst North East will host its 15th annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration on Wednesday, July 4, starting at 6:30 p.m. The celebration will feature food and fun activities for the whole family throughout the evening, and will conclude with a fireworks display at 10 pm.

Eight Great Tuesday’s is a free concert series on Tuesday nights at the Pepsi Amphitheatre inside Liberty Park. Here is the lineup for 8 Great Tuesday’s for 2007: July 10 - Big Leg Emma, Yankee Zydeco Company, Tiger Maple String Band, July 17 - Ana Popovic, July 24 - Devon Allman’s Honeytribe, July 31 - Dave Stevens Big Band, August 7 - PovertyNeck Hillbillies, August 14 - Jakes Blues, August 21 - Tab Benoit and August 28 - Big Brother and The Holding Company.

The summer Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, begins Thursday, July 12, with a performance by Japanese carillonneur Toru Takao. The following Thursday, July 19, the featured musicians will be the duo Ana and Sara Elias, Portugese sisters who perform under the name Lvsitanvs. Tin-Shi Tam, university carillonneur at Iowa State, will close the series on Thursday, July 26. All three performances will begin at 7 pm, and are free and open to the public. Seating is on the lawn of the John M Lilley Library, so concert goers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Refreshments will be served.

The Counting Crows, Live and Collective Soul will play a concert at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA on July 31 as part of “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Triple Play Ballpark Tour.” Tickets go on sale June 2 at 10 am. Tickets can be purchased at the SeaWolves box office at Jerry Uht Park and on SeaWolves.com. Children under 12 get in FREE with each paid adult ticket holder.

The Motorcycle, Car, Boat and Truck show called the Lake Erie Classic will be held August 3-5 at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field.
