Erie PA News and Events for Friday June 15, 2007

Posted by Dennis on June 15, 2007

The ponytail wearing environmentalist hippies held a misrepresentational information meeting on the Erie Renewable Energy proposed tire to energy plant. They would have you believe the plant will cause everything from cancer to autism to children not wanting to do their homework. Energy Products of Idaho, the company that will design the plant in Erie, has installed about 100 of the “fluidized-bed gasification” systems in plants around the globe. The science is solid. The Energy Products of Idaho designed plant in Shippenville, PA that passed all energy output guarantees and environmental compliance tests in 1997.
In 2003, more than 290 million scrap tires were generated in the U S with 130 million scrap tires used as tire derived fuel (TDF). Using all scrap tires as TDF would save the equivalent to 14 million barrels of crude oil. Tires produce the same amount of energy as oil and 25 percent more energy than coal. The ash residues from TDF may contain a lower heavy metals content than some coals.
From the US Environmental Protection Agency - “Based on over 15 years of experience with more than 80 individual facilities, EPA recognizes that the use of tire-derived fuels is a viable alternative to the use of fossil fuels.”
The $100 million Erie Renewable Energy plant project will create 200 construction jobs, about 80 full time jobs and produce enough energy to supply electricity to 50,000 homes.

Seven decorated Pennsylvania veterans were inducted into the Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home Hall of Fame today during a ceremony at the home in Erie.
