Dennis,

I can't believe you missed the story where County Exec Diveccio is going to give InvestErie another $175,000 for the parade & 19th grocery store. Channel 24 interviewed him Friday Night. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry as he said "I promise the people of Erie County that this money will be well spent"!!!

Am I wrong or would the GAF site be perfect for Railpower? Plenty of rail access not only to the CSX main line, but also to the Mounfort International Terminal so locomotives could be shipped out via water. Also the existing infrastructure at GAF would be perfect for a manufacturing operation, although the port authority would rather make another convention center parking lot than attract jobs to Erie.

@ Jeff: I disagree about the GAF site. Whatever goes in there really needs to be a quasi-commercial/residential/public area. The bayfront is too valuable to the revival of downtown as far as getting people to move and live down there. I'm even disappointed that the old Hammermill property might become an industrial site once more. Don't you think there is there plenty of property on W. 12th and other inland areas to accommodate these prospective industries?

Posted by: RichardZ.com at June 18, 2007 8:07 AM

Hello Richard,

I have to disagree. I personally am for the fact that what is currently an industrial site on the lakefront should stay industrial. For example, what about Erie Shipbuilding? Oglebay Norton? Jerilu? Erie Coke? Are you telling me you'd rather have a shopping center that generates a bunch of minimum wage jobs along the bayfront just because it would encourage people to move here, or would you rather have good paying manufacturing jobs there???? Like it or not, the bayfront is not the key to getting people to move to Erie; GOOD PAYING jobs are. And I say good paying because these jobs in shopping centers are not. As far as transportation and logistics are concerned, GAF is easily accessible by three modes of transportation with the current infrastructure--water, truck, and rail, whereas truck and rail are the only ones easily accessible on West 12th street.
