ECO Crane
TSI Terminal Systems and Railpower Technologies Corp (TSX: P) announced that they have completed the preliminary testing of Railpower’s first ECO Crane hybrid power plant recently installed on one of TSI’s 60-ton rubber tyred gantry cranes (RTGs). This installation is the first of three units slated for TSI. The diesel/ battery hybrid power plant has achieved 74 percent fuel savings during these first active duty tests. The RTGs are mobile equipment driven by electric motors that are powered by large on-board diesel generation sets. Railpower’s technology consists of replacing a conventional diesel generator set with a smaller diesel engine/ alternator and lead acid battery energy storage combination (hybrid). Railpower’s U S office is located in Erie, Pennsylvania.

During yesterday’s House consideration of H R 2641, the Energy and Water Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2008, U S Rep Phil English (R-Pa) pressed and secured a commitment from U S Rep Pete Visclosky (D-Ohio), Chairman of the Energy and Water Appropriations Committee, which has jurisdiction over the Army Corps of Engineers Construction Budget, to work with him to ensure that adequate funding will be provide to the shoreline replenishment program at Presque Isle State Park.

Leslie Sadley has been named director of the creative services department for Nexstar Broadcasting in Erie, WJET (ABC) and WFXP (FOX). Sadley attended Mercyhurst College in Erie. She started her TV career at WJET as the creative services coordinator and then moved to producer. She comes from KREN/KAZR in Reno where she was Director of Creative Services.

Auditor General Jack Wagner called on Gov Rendell, the General Assembly and the Department of Education to work together to standardize the funding system for Pennsylvania’s 119 charter schools, including 11 cyber charter schools, to make it fairer for taxpayers and the commonwealth. Wagner issued the call after releasing audits of three charter schools which showed that all three received hundreds of thousands of dollars more in reimbursement money than their actual costs for educating students. The three charter schools were the Pennsylvania Global Academy Charter School and the Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy Charter School, in Erie County; and the Roberto Clemente Charter School in Lehigh County. The two Erie County charter schools ceased operations on June 30, 2005, following the settlement of a lawsuit by the Erie County School District; Roberto Clemente remains open. According to auditors, Pennsylvania Global Academy, which opened in 2003, received $318,243 more than the actual cost of education during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 school years. Auditors determined that Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy, which opened in 2003, received $593,158 more than the actual cost of education in the 2003-04 and 2004-05 school years.

A number of people from Erie are taking Summer classes at the Heritage School. The school is part of the Succop Conservancy at Butler County Community College. Classes are aimed at folk art disciplines that represent Western Pennsylvania culture in hopes that they won’t disappear. Courses include “Native American Storytelling,” “Woodcarving” and “Civil War Quilting.”

The Erie SeaWolves Tuesday doubleheader against the Altoona Curve was postponed due to rain. The two teams will play a doubleheader today with a 5:05 first pitch.

Keri Cooney of Erie was the net score winner of the West Penn Women’s Amateur at Hannastown Golf Club with a 3-under 69.

The International Institute of Erie celebrates World Refugee Day on Wednesday June 20. Come to the festivites at Perry Square on Tuesday from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Many cultures will be featured in entertainment and exhibits, former refugees participate at various levels and public education is provided concerning worldwide refugee circumstances.

The Gospel group Harmonizers of Faith will perform at the Sprint Sunset Music Series on June 20. All free concerts are held on Wednesdays on Beach 1 beginning at 6:30 pm. A food and beverage vendor will be available for snacks to enjoy during the show.

The Erie Playhouse has added a Sunday, June 24 7:30 pm showing of The Full Monty. “The Full Monty” will be performed at the Erie Playhouse June 20-24. For tickets or info call (814) 454-2852 ext 0.

The 2007 Erie Summer Festival of the Arts will take place Friday through Sunday, June 22-24. This is a FREE event and open to the public. It will again be held at Liberty Park on the Erie Bayfront. The theme will be “You Gotta Have Arts.”

“Defense Contracting for Small and Disadvantaged Manufacturers (SADM),” presented by the Small and Disadvantaged Manufacturers’ Consortium will be presented on June 25 from 9 am - 4 pm at the Days Inn, Meadville. Speakers at the consortium will review SBA programs, how to get sole source and set aside contracts, and marketing to the government and large defense contractors. There is a $190 fee for this event. Darren Williams, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host a Summer Open House Night in Astronomy event at the college on Wednesday, June 27. Williams’ lecture, “What is a Planet? Why Not Pluto?” will begin at 8:30 pm in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building, and will be followed by astronomical viewing from the college’s Mehalso Observatory, weather permitting. Williams’ lecture and telescope viewing are intended for a non-technical audience, and are open to the public free of charge. The Erie Downtown Bike Nights will be held June 29 and August 31.

As part of the Erie Summer-Long Jazz Festival, the Gem City Jazz Ensemble will present a free jazz concert for the entire family on June 30th from 6:30 to 8:15 at the Blasco Library’s H O Hirt Auditorium. Parents are encouraged to bring the kids to the show to learn about and experience jazz firsthand! The first half hour of the program will feature familiar children’s songs with a jazz flare, including the Hokey Pokey, Theme From Sesame Street, and Mickey Mouse. After a brief intermission, a one-hour jazz concert will be performed for the entire family, featuring such charts as Sidewinder, When You’re Smiling, New York New York, and Corner Pocket. This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Blasco Library.

Mercyhurst North East will host its 15th annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration on Wednesday, July 4, starting at 6:30 p.m. The celebration will feature food and fun activities for the whole family throughout the evening, and will conclude with a fireworks display at 10 pm.

The 19th annual Panegyri Greek Festival will be held July 6- 8 at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 4376 West Lake Road. The hours are Friday, July 6, 2:30 until 11 pm, Saturday, July 7, 11 am until 11 pm, and Sunday, July 8, from 12 noon until 9 pm. Admission is FREE and there is plenty of FREE PARKING next to the Church.

Eight Great Tuesday’s is a free concert series on Tuesday nights at the Pepsi Amphitheatre inside Liberty Park. The summer Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, begins Thursday, July 12, with a performance by Japanese carillonneur Toru Takao. The following Thursday, July 19, the featured musicians will be the duo Ana and Sara Elias, Portugese sisters who perform under the name Lvsitanvs. Tin-Shi Tam, university carillonneur at Iowa State, will close the series on Thursday, July 26. All three performances will begin at 7 pm, and are free and open to the public. Seating is on the lawn of the John M Lilley Library, so concert goers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Refreshments will be served.

The 14th annual Discover Presque Isle festival will take place July 27-29, 2007.

The Counting Crows, Live and Collective Soul will play a concert at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA on July 31 as part of “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Triple Play Ballpark Tour.” Tickets go on sale June 2 at 10 am. Tickets can be purchased at the SeaWolves box office at Jerry Uht Park and on SeaWolves.com. Children under 12 get in FREE with each paid adult ticket holder.

The Motorcycle, Car, Boat and Truck show called the Lake Erie Classic will be held August 3-5 at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field.
