The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry Center for Workforce Information and Analysis will close their field offices in Erie and Johnstown will have their jobs transferred to Harrisburg in December. The Pittsburgh office closed Friday.
Gannon University’s Conferencing Department, in cooperation with American Adventure Sports, will host the annual Junior Naturalist Outdoor Adventure Camp (JNOAC) later this summer. The camp will run from 8 am to 4:30 pm Aug 6 -10 and will focus on conservation education and environmental enhancement projects through outdoor adventures. It is designed for youth ages 8-12. Considered a celebration of the outdoors, the JNOAC offers adventure sports such as sailing, orienteering, canoeing, rock climbing, rappelling, fly fishing, wilderness tracking, and more. Through these activities, participants will learn to assess and manage risk, water safety, water rescue, and wilderness first aid. New activities for this year’s camp include fresh-water snorkeling at Presque Isle, raft building, and geo-caching. Five members of the Erie Otters were selected during the National Hockey League Entry Draft held in Columbus, Ohio. Nick Palmieri, who finish third in Otters scoring in 2006-07 with 24 goals and 21 assists for 45 points in 56 games, was taken in the third round (79th overall) by the New Jersey Devils. Anthony Peluso, Luke Gazdic and Zack Torquato were all taken in the sixth round. Peluso, completed his second OHL season with seven goals and three assists for 10 points in 56 games to go along with a team-high 176 minutes in penalties, went to the St Louis Blues with the 160th overall pick, Gazdic (who netted five goals and eight assists for 13 points and 136 minutes in penalties during his rookie season) was taken by the Dallas Stars 172nd overall and Torquato (the Otters leading scorer last season with 30 goals and 39 assists for 69 points) went to the Detroit Red Wings 178th overall. Josh Kidd was the final member of the Otters selected in the draft when he was taken by the Los Angeles Kings in the seventh round (184th overall). The 18 year-old Sundridge, Ontario native is coming off his most successful offensive season with nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points in 64 games.
The Erie SeaWolves, behind a great performance by Eddie Bonine, took game two of their four-game series against the Trenton Thunder on Saturday night by a final score of 7-2. Bonine (6-4) went seven solid innings and retired the side in order in six of the seven inning he pitched. He allowed an unearned run on three hits and for the second straight outing allowing no walks while striking out a pair. The SeaWolves and Thunder meet on Sunday at Jerry Uht Park…1:05 First Pitch. RHP Matt Righter (2-1, 1.86 ERA) makes a spot start for the ‘Wolves against RHP Jeff Marquez (8-3, 2.70 ERA).
The Pittsburgh Passion women’s football team (9-0) routed the Erie Illusion (7-2) 63-7.
Gannon University women’s basketball coach Cleve Wright received a contract extension through the 2009-10 season. Wright was named GLIAC Coach of the Year after leading Gannon to a 25-6 record and a trip to the NCAA tournament. The squad recently posted a 3.39 team GPA in the fall semester of 2006 and a 3.42 team GPA during the spring semester of 2007.

Darren Williams, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host a Summer Open House Night in Astronomy event at the college on Wednesday, June 27. Williams’ lecture, “What is a Planet? Why Not Pluto?” will begin at 8:30 pm in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building, and will be followed by astronomical viewing from the college’s Mehalso Observatory, weather permitting. Williams’ lecture and telescope viewing are intended for a non-technical audience, and are open to the public free of charge. As part of the Erie Summer-Long Jazz Festival, the Gem City Jazz Ensemble will present a free jazz concert for the entire family on June 30th from 6:30 to 8:15 at the Blasco Library’s H O Hirt Auditorium. Parents are encouraged to bring the kids to the show to learn about and experience jazz firsthand! The first half hour of the program will feature familiar children’s songs with a jazz flare, including the Hokey Pokey, Theme From Sesame Street, and Mickey Mouse. After a brief intermission, a one-hour jazz concert will be performed for the entire family, featuring such charts as Sidewinder, When You’re Smiling, New York New York, and Corner Pocket. This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Blasco Library.
Mercyhurst North East will host its 15th annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration on Wednesday, July 4, starting at 6:30 p.m. The celebration will feature food and fun activities for the whole family throughout the evening, and will conclude with a fireworks display at 10 pm.
The 19th annual Panegyri Greek Festival will be held July 6- 8 at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 4376 West Lake Road. The hours are Friday, July 6, 2:30 until 11 pm, Saturday, July 7, 11 am until 11 pm, and Sunday, July 8, from 12 noon until 9 pm. Admission is FREE and there is plenty of FREE PARKING next to the Church.

The summer Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, begins Thursday, July 12, with a performance by Japanese carillonneur Toru Takao. The following Thursday, July 19, the featured musicians will be the duo Ana and Sara Elias, Portugese sisters who perform under the name Lvsitanvs. Tin-Shi Tam, university carillonneur at Iowa State, will close the series on Thursday, July 26. All three performances will begin at 7 pm, and are free and open to the public. Seating is on the lawn of the John M Lilley Library, so concert goers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Refreshments will be served.
The Counting Crows, Live and Collective Soul will play a concert at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA on July 31 as part of “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Triple Play Ballpark Tour.” Tickets go on sale June 2 at 10 am. Tickets can be purchased at the SeaWolves box office at Jerry Uht Park and on SeaWolves.com. Children under 12 get in FREE with each paid adult ticket holder.
The Motorcycle, Car, Boat and Truck show called the Lake Erie Classic will be held August 3-5 at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field.
