Spectrum Control of Erie (Nasdaq: SPEC) reported fiscal second-quarter net income of $2.8 million, or 20 cents per diluted share, on sales of $33.6 million, compared to net income of $1.7 million or 13 cents per share on sales of $31.9 million for the same period last year. For the first half of fiscal 2007, the Company had net income of $4.9 million or 37 cents per share (36 cents diluted) on sales of $66.4 million. For the comparable period of 2006, the Company had net income of $2.0 million or 15 cents per share on sales of $57.4 million. Shares of Spectrum Control rose 93 cents, or 6.7 percent, to $14.80 in extended session trading.

Members of the UE Local 506 ratified a 4 year contract with GE.

The Erie County unemployment rate for May 2007 was 4.6 percent, the same as the April 2007 figure. In May 2006 it stood at 5.4 percent. See the Pennsylvania’s Civilian Labor Force data for complete state figures.

A 3 vehicle accident near Conneaut Township left one man dead. Ronald E Wiley of Conneaut, Ohio died when his car was stuck head on by Ben Swank of Edinboro. Swank, the former General McLane standout athlete was turning onto Route 226 when the accident occurred. Swank is in serious condition at Hamot. The driver of the third vehicle, Van Gareth Freeland, wasn’t hurt.

ResiComm Fund Management Inc will receive $2 million from the Building PA program for real estate projects in rural communities spanning from Pittsburgh to Erie. The strategy is designed to invest in municipalities, primarily third-class cities, with less than 50,000 residents and that have either below-median income or high unemployment. Initially, preference for funding will be given for multi use building projects that contain both commercial and residential units, with the purpose of attracting small businesses and new residents back to these communities.

Pierce County, Washington Superior Court Administrator Andra Motyka has been selected to receive the Award of Merit from the National Association of Court Managers next month in Chicago. Motyka was a District Court administrator in Erie until her move in 1995.

Pastor Michelle L Wobrak and family have arrived at their new home of Erie. She must have already started her duties at Christ United Methodist Church as their are pics of their moving van on the site already.

The Erie SeaWolves took their fourth straight ballgame on Tuesday night and are now a season-high nine-games over .500 following a 9-4 win over the Bowie Baysox. The SeaWolves and Baysox meet in game two of their four-game series at Prince George’s Stadium on Wednesday night…7:05 First Pitch. RHP Jair Jurrjens (2-3, 3.80 ERA) takes the mound for the ‘Wolves against RHP Rosman Garcia (1-3, 5.01 ERA).

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League announced that they have traded their second round pick in Wednesday’s Canadian Hockey League Import Draft to the Owen Sound Attack in exchange for a 10th round pick in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection. Erie’s second round Import Draft pick was the 62nd overall. The Otters dealt the selection to adhere to CHL rules, which states teams can only have two Import players on the their active roster. Czech Republic forward Stanislav Polodna, an 18 year-old who collected 10 goals and 21 assists for 31 points in 63 games in 2006-07, is expected to return for his second season as a member of the Otters. The Otters still hold the second overall pick in the Import Draft, being held via the Internet and Conference Call beginning at 9 am. The Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League will select first overall.

The Sam Hyman Band performs this evening at Beach 1 beginning at 6:30 pm for the Sprint Sunset Music Series. The event is free. A food and beverage vendor will be available for snacks to enjoy during the show.

The Peek n’ Peak Classic takes place today through July 1. Tickets are $10 per day or $30 for a pass for the entire week. The Golf Channel will have live coverage Thursday through Sunday.

Darren Williams, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host a Summer Open House Night in Astronomy event at the college on Wednesday, June 27. Williams’ lecture, “What is a Planet? Why Not Pluto?” will begin at 8:30 pm in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building, and will be followed by astronomical viewing from the college’s Mehalso Observatory, weather permitting. Williams’ lecture and telescope viewing are intended for a non-technical audience, and are open to the public free of charge. The Erie Downtown Bike Nights will be held June 29 and August 31.

The Week 2 Concert Band of the Band Camp for Adult Musicians at Allegheny College will perform a free gala concert on Friday, June 29 at 7:30 pm in the college’s Shafer Auditorium. Conducting the concert band will be Col Timothy Foley, USMC (ret). Foley, a native of Berwick, Pa, retired in 2004 as the leader of the United States Marine Band—known as “the President’s Own”—in Washington, DC. He spent over 30 years in the Marine Band as a clarinetist and as assistant leader before becoming the band’s leader in 1998. Meadville resident and mezzo-soprano Aimée Reash will perform as soloist. She will sing the “Habanera” from Georges Bizet’s “Carmen.” Reash, a graduate of Allegheny, teaches voice at the college and is a member of the staff at Pelletier Library.

As part of the Erie Summer-Long Jazz Festival, the Gem City Jazz Ensemble will present a free jazz concert for the entire family on June 30th from 6:30 to 8:15 at the Blasco Library’s H O Hirt Auditorium. Parents are encouraged to bring the kids to the show to learn about and experience jazz firsthand! The first half hour of the program will feature familiar children’s songs with a jazz flare, including the Hokey Pokey, Theme From Sesame Street, and Mickey Mouse. After a brief intermission, a one-hour jazz concert will be performed for the entire family, featuring such charts as Sidewinder, When You’re Smiling, New York New York, and Corner Pocket. This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Blasco Library.

Mercyhurst North East will host its 15th annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration on Wednesday, July 4, starting at 6:30 p.m. The celebration will feature food and fun activities for the whole family throughout the evening, and will conclude with a fireworks display at 10 pm.

The 19th annual Panegyri Greek Festival will be held July 6- 8 at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 4376 West Lake Road. The hours are Friday, July 6, 2:30 until 11 pm, Saturday, July 7, 11 am until 11 pm, and Sunday, July 8, from 12 noon until 9 pm. Admission is FREE and there is plenty of FREE PARKING next to the Church.

Scott and Kim McClelland take the stage together this summer for the first time since 1996. The McClelland’s met 20 years ago in the summer of 1987 at the Erie Playhouse. As a way of celebrating their life in the theatre, they have created “Lovers Haters and Others.” The Roadhouse Theatre show is homage to the great love affairs written for the stage. Classic and poetic love stories will be paired with epic vicious battles between famous characters from theatrical history. “Lovers Haters and Others” runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm July 6 - August 4. Family First Sports Park is having a girls basketball camp July 9-10 for varsity and junior varsity players. Boys camp will be held July 14-15 for both teams. Cost for the camps is $90 per player residential and $50 per player for commuters. All residential players receive meals and a free Fun Center pass. Coaches stay for free. Eight Great Tuesday’s is a free concert series on Tuesday nights at the Pepsi Amphitheatre inside Liberty Park. Here is the lineup for 8 Great Tuesday’s for 2007: July 10 - Big Leg Emma, Yankee Zydeco Company, Tiger Maple String Band, July 17 - Ana Popovic, July 24 - Devon Allman’s Honeytribe, July 31 - Dave Stevens Big Band, August 7 - PovertyNeck Hillbillies, August 14 - Jakes Blues, August 21 - Tab Benoit and August 28 - Big Brother and The Holding Company.

The summer Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, begins Thursday, July 12, with a performance by Japanese carillonneur Toru Takao. The following Thursday, July 19, the featured musicians will be the duo Ana and Sara Elias, Portugese sisters who perform under the name Lvsitanvs. Tin-Shi Tam, university carillonneur at Iowa State, will close the series on Thursday, July 26. All three performances will begin at 7 pm, and are free and open to the public. Seating is on the lawn of the John M Lilley Library, so concert goers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Refreshments will be served.

The Wattsburg Erie County Battle of the Bands and Music Festival will be held Friday evening July 27 and Saturday July 28 at the Erie County Fairgrounds.

The Counting Crows, Live and Collective Soul will play a concert at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA on July 31 as part of “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Triple Play Ballpark Tour.” Tickets go on sale June 2 at 10 am. Tickets can be purchased at the SeaWolves box office at Jerry Uht Park and on SeaWolves.com. Children under 12 get in FREE with each paid adult ticket holder.

The Motorcycle, Car, Boat and Truck show called the Lake Erie Classic will be held August 3-5 at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field.
