Erie PA News and Events for Thursday June 28, 2007
Erie County Judge Stephanie Domitrovich ruled against lifting a deed restriction on the Erie Golf Course property. It must remain a golf course or a public park. The city wanted the restriction lifted so they could sell the property to developers. The city has about a $2 million debt from recent renovations at the course. Erie Golf Course would make money if it’s run like a business. You hire workers and not give jobs to people as political payoffs. And the marketing has to be more than having the phone number published. Millcreek Township wants it and it is located in Millcreek. Sell it to them or lease it to them. They’ll make it a success.

John P Beaumont of Penn State Erie, The Behrend College has been named a Fellow of The Society of Plastics Engineers.
Mercyhurst College today announced that it will relocate its adult and graduate center and the college’s civic institute to a site four blocks north of campus at 511 E 34th St., following an agreement approved by the administration and officials of Saints Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church. The college has entered a five-year agreement to lease a portion of the church’s social center encompassing 7,791 square feet of space, according to Thomas Billingsley, executive vice president for administration. Contractors will immediately begin remodeling the interior to accommodate the office, workshop and conference room needs of the adult college and civic institute. The renovations, estimated at $220,000, are expected to be completed by early August, Billingsley said. Although the relocation involves moving only about 10 administrators and staff, it frees up much-needed room on the Erie campus, in particular, creating a dedicated space for Mercyhurst’s growing intelligence studies program at 3928 Wayne St, a facility it currently shares with the adult and graduate center. In addition, relocating the Mercyhurst College Civic Institute, now housed in Preston Hall, will make between five and six offices available for faculty on the Erie campus.

Do any of these clowns in City Hall know anything about how to run the City? First the Arbitrator says Erie has to hire back the laid-off firefighters and reopen 2 companies. Then they can't sell the Golf course to developers because no one did research on the property deed!

Wow. Isn't that interesting. So it will cost $220,000 to move only 10 administrative people and staff? 10 people with all that cost?
That's $22,000 per Mercyhurst employee! Did you know it costs around $22,000 a year now just for a commuter student to attend the school? That doesn't include room and board of course.
But it does illustrate how Mercyhurst and other schools blow huge wads of money on things that aren't really related to providing an education.
