AT&T, the largest US telephone company, has agreed to buy Dobson Communications for about $2.8 billion in cash, acquiring the Cellular One brand. Your Cellular One bill should say AT&T by the end of the year. This should be good news if you plan on getting an iPhone.

Developers Diversified (NYSE: DDR) announced they are selling 63 properties including the 106,331 sq ft Tops Plaza on W 26th Street in Erie PA. Developers Diversified owns and manages approximately 740 retail operating and development properties in 45 states, plus Puerto Rico and Brazil, totaling approximately 155 million square feet.

The New Jersey-based rock group Tokyo Rose is ready to hit the road in support of the upcoming full-length album The Promise in Compromise out July 31st on SideCho Records. The band kicks off its tour July 11th in Erie, PA at Forward Hall with Bedlight For Blue Eyes and Sound The Alarm.

A WiMax network covering a wide swath of the Northeast from Virginia to Maine is preparing to launch commercial service in August. It could pose a challenge for existing Wi-Fi municipal networks and eventually for cable and DSL broadband networks. Horizon Wi-Com, a well-financed startup, has installed towers in nine Northeast cities and is testing the service in each city with initial users. The initial deployments have been installed and are up-and-running in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Richmond, and Cincinnati. The 802.16e [Mobile WiMax] technology operates in the licensed 2.3 GHz spectrum band. Horizon Wi-Com purchased eight licenses from Verizon several months ago to enable it to cover the vast region from Virginian to Maine and west to Ohio. The only exception is an area around Erie, Pennsylvania that is not covered by the licenses. Figures.


The Peek n’ Peak Classic takes place today Sunday. Tickets are $10 per day. The Golf Channel will have live coverage. Paul Claxton shot a second consecutive round of 66 for a 4 stroke lead through two rounds of the Peek’n Peak Classic. Roland Thatcher and Jon Mills are tied for second. Erie PA native Andrew Pratt who played golf at the University of Tennessee is at 4 under.

Pitcher Roman Colon was charged with punching a teammate at triple-A Toledo during a June 12 locker room fight that left the other player with severe facial injuries. Colon was charged with felonious assault. The Detroit Tigers suspended Colon for seven days and sent to play at double A Erie.

Pitcher Mark Corey who attended Edinboro is a member of the Indianapolis Indians, the Class AAA minor league affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. During his major league career, Corey, 32, has appeared in 81 games for the Pirates, Rockies and Mets.

The Erie SeaWolves completed their first road sweep of the season over the Bowie Baysox with a 7-2 win on Friday night at Prince George’s Stadium. The win improved the ‘Wolves to a season-high 12-games over .500 (45-33) and they also extended their season-high winning streak to seven straight. The SeaWolves head back home for a weekend showdown with first place Akron beginning on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park…7:05 First Pitch. RHP Andrew Kown (2-4, 4.03 ERA) takes the mound for the ‘Wolves against LHP Chuck Lofgren (7-5, 4.17 ERA).

Blackhawk High School infielder Craig Denman accepted a baseball scholarship offer from Mercyhurst College.

Harborcreek Community Day will be held today from 11 am to 7 pm at the Harborcreek Township Municipal Grounds, 5601 Buffalo Road. This event includes Food, Crafts, Bingo/games, Kids Activities and a Tour of the Municipal Building and Garage. There will also be displays from Harborcreek Fire Department, Fairfield Hose Company and the Brookside Fire Departments. Main Stage Activities include: Full Force, Mary Jo and Showdown and East Avenue. Admission is free.

The exhibit of the vessel Dreamer, a 55 foot 1929 Alden Ketch sailboat, today begins it’s permanent display at the Erie County History Center and Cashier’s House, 419 State Street. The timing coinsides with the release of the Dr David Frew book “Dreams Afloat.” Dr Frew will be on hand from 11 am to 1 pm to sign copies of the book.

The Marx Toy Museum 7th Anniversary Celebration will be held today from 1 to 5 pm. Whether you are a former employee, a toy collector, or a traveler looking for a unique vacation stop, a visit to the Marx Toy Museum is a relaxing way to spend a few hours. The is located at 50 Bloomfield Parkway, near I-90 Exit 27.

As part of the Erie Summer-Long Jazz Festival, the Gem City Jazz Ensemble will present a free jazz concert for the entire family today, June 30th from 6:30 to 8:15 at the Blasco Library’s H O Hirt Auditorium. Parents are encouraged to bring the kids to the show to learn about and experience jazz firsthand! The first half hour of the program will feature familiar children’s songs with a jazz flare, including the Hokey Pokey, Theme From Sesame Street, and Mickey Mouse. After a brief intermission, a one-hour jazz concert will be performed for the entire family, featuring such charts as Sidewinder, When You’re Smiling, New York New York, and Corner Pocket. This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Blasco Library.

Mercyhurst North East will host its 15th annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration on Wednesday, July 4, starting at 6:30 p.m. The celebration will feature food and fun activities for the whole family throughout the evening, and will conclude with a fireworks display at 10 pm.

The 19th annual Panegyri Greek Festival will be held July 6- 8 at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 4376 West Lake Road. The hours are Friday, July 6, 2:30 until 11 pm, Saturday, July 7, 11 am until 11 pm, and Sunday, July 8, from 12 noon until 9 pm. Admission is FREE and there is plenty of FREE PARKING next to the Church.

Scott and Kim McClelland take the stage together this summer for the first time since 1996. The McClelland’s met 20 years ago in the summer of 1987 at the Erie Playhouse. As a way of celebrating their life in the theatre, they have created “Lovers Haters and Others.” The Roadhouse Theatre show is homage to the great love affairs written for the stage. Classic and poetic love stories will be paired with epic vicious battles between famous characters from theatrical history. “Lovers Haters and Others” runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm July 6 - August 4. Family First Sports Park is having a girls basketball camp July 9-10 for varsity and junior varsity players. Boys camp will be held July 14-15 for both teams. Eight Great Tuesday’s is a free concert series on Tuesday nights at the Pepsi Amphitheatre inside Liberty Park. Here is the lineup for 8 Great Tuesday’s for 2007: July 10 - Big Leg Emma, Yankee Zydeco Company, Tiger Maple String Band, July 17 - Ana Popovic, July 24 - Devon Allman’s Honeytribe, July 31 - Dave Stevens Big Band, August 7 - PovertyNeck Hillbillies, August 14 - Jakes Blues, August 21 - Tab Benoit and August 28 - Big Brother and The Holding Company.

The summer Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, begins Thursday, July 12, with a performance by Japanese carillonneur Toru Takao. The following Thursday, July 19, the featured musicians will be the duo Ana and Sara Elias, Portugese sisters who perform under the name Lvsitanvs. Tin-Shi Tam, university carillonneur at Iowa State, will close the series on Thursday, July 26. All three performances will begin at 7 pm, and are free and open to the public. Seating is on the lawn of the John M Lilley Library, so concert goers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Refreshments will be served.

The Wattsburg Erie County Battle of the Bands and Music Festival will be held Friday evening July 27 and Saturday July 28 at the Erie County Fairgrounds.

The Counting Crows, Live and Collective Soul will play a concert at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA on July 31 as part of “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Triple Play Ballpark Tour.” Tickets go on sale June 2 at 10 am. Tickets can be purchased at the SeaWolves box office at Jerry Uht Park and on SeaWolves.com. Children under 12 get in FREE with each paid adult ticket holder.

The Motorcycle, Car, Boat and Truck show called the Lake Erie Classic will be held August 3-5 at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field.

Cingular/AT&T has been available in Erie for awhile. When I lived in Erie I had Cingular. It's available online or at Radio Shack stores in Erie. Check here:
