Little Italy, Liberty and Sassafras Streets from West 16 to West 19, is the target area for a revitalization effort. Housing and Neighborhood Development Service (HANDS), the Erie Redevelopment Authority, the Sisters of St. Joseph Neighborhood Network and the City of Erie are working on plans for the area. Poggemeyer Design Group was hired to do design work on streetscaping, lighting and signage. HANDS spent $441,915 to build three homes in the 300 and 400 blocks of W 17 Street. Three nice new homes for the crack dealers to stand in front of and sell drugs when they are finished this Fall.

Harborcreek Youth Services received $670,000 and Family Services of Northwestern PA received $638,740 in grants from the Pennsylvania
Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

For the week of June 18-24, Presque Isle Downs and Casino reported $34,487,262 with payouts of $31,222,779. They will be making an announcement next week on when simulcast racing will begin. Live Thoroughbred racing will take place in September.

The Erie SeaWolves beat the Bowie Baysox 0-2 in a game shortened to 6 innings due to rain. Erie starter Eddie Bonine got the win and moved to (7-4) on the season. Oscar Alvarez took the loss and dropped to (6-2) on the year. The Baysox will try to avoid their first series sweep of the season tomorrow in the series finale vs. Erie. LHP Chris Waters gets the start for the Baysox, Opposing RHP Matt Righter for Erie.

The Harbor Creek ‘Futbol’ club recently traveled to and participated in the National Sand Soccer Championships held each year in Virginia Beach, Va.The 11 members of the under 16 division team captured 2nd place and were awarded a silver medal.The event was host to over 850 teams and 9,000 athletes in various divisions.

Recent Gannon University grad Jenn Kulick has signed a contract with the Frameries Athletics, a semi-pro softball team in Belgium that competes against teams from all over Europe. In her senior year at Gannon Kulick went 20-8 with one save and a 1.72 ERA. She recorded 99 strikeouts in 175 1/3 innings.

Non-faculty coaches at the 14 Pennsylvania state colleges announced they have tentatively agreed to a new 4 year contract. All full times coaches will received a $1,250 cash bonus and 9 percent annual raises. Beginning in July 2009, the minimum salary will increase from $35,000 to $37,500 for head coaches and from $30,000 to $32,500 for assistant coaches.

Nine Erie art galleries host Gallery Night , free gallery activities, today June 29, 7-10 pm. Opening receptions will be held for Dichroic Color, Light and Space Sculpture by Ray Howlett , Gregory Anderson: Works from an Unacceptable Portfolio and Diane Fox: UnNatural History at the Erie Art Museum. There will also be Gallery Talk with Ray Howlett at 8 pm. Other galleries along the route include Glass Growers Gallery, Urraro Gallery, Kada Gallery, Geary’s Studio 7 Gallery, Allen Stoneware Gallery, Tarsus Studio Gallery, Kuhn’s Gallery and the Bayfront Gallery are included in the tour. The event is FREE and open to the general public. EMTA’s Bayliner will provide shuttle transportation for 50 cents per ride throughout the event’s footprint.


The Peek n’ Peak Classic takes place today through July 1. Tickets are $10 per day or $30 for a pass for the entire week. The Golf Channel will have live coverage Thursday through Sunday.


The Erie Downtown Bike Night will be held this evening June 29 at 5 pm along State Street. The next one is scheduled for August 31.


The Week 2 Concert Band of the Band Camp for Adult Musicians at Allegheny College will perform a free gala concert on Friday, June 29 at 7:30 pm in the college’s Shafer Auditorium. Conducting the concert band will be Col Timothy Foley, USMC (ret). Foley, a native of Berwick, Pa, retired in 2004 as the leader of the United States Marine Band—known as “the President’s Own”—in Washington, DC. He spent over 30 years in the Marine Band as a clarinetist and as assistant leader before becoming the band’s leader in 1998. Meadville resident and mezzo-soprano Aimée Reash will perform as soloist. She will sing the “Habanera” from Georges Bizet’s “Carmen.” Reash, a graduate of Allegheny, teaches voice at the college and is a member of the staff at Pelletier Library.


As part of the Erie Summer-Long Jazz Festival, the Gem City Jazz Ensemble will present a free jazz concert for the entire family on June 30th from 6:30 to 8:15 at the Blasco Library’s H O Hirt Auditorium. Parents are encouraged to bring the kids to the show to learn about and experience jazz firsthand! The first half hour of the program will feature familiar children’s songs with a jazz flare, including the Hokey Pokey, Theme From Sesame Street, and Mickey Mouse. After a brief intermission, a one-hour jazz concert will be performed for the entire family, featuring such charts as Sidewinder, When You’re Smiling, New York New York, and Corner Pocket. This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Blasco Library.

Mercyhurst North East will host its 15th annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration on Wednesday, July 4, starting at 6:30 p.m. The celebration will feature food and fun activities for the whole family throughout the evening, and will conclude with a fireworks display at 10 pm.

The 19th annual Panegyri Greek Festival will be held July 6- 8 at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 4376 West Lake Road. The hours are Friday, July 6, 2:30 until 11 pm, Saturday, July 7, 11 am until 11 pm, and Sunday, July 8, from 12 noon until 9 pm. Admission is FREE and there is plenty of FREE PARKING next to the Church.

Scott and Kim McClelland take the stage together this summer for the first time since 1996. The McClelland’s met 20 years ago in the summer of 1987 at the Erie Playhouse. As a way of celebrating their life in the theatre, they have created “Lovers Haters and Others.” The Roadhouse Theatre show is homage to the great love affairs written for the stage. Classic and poetic love stories will be paired with epic vicious battles between famous characters from theatrical history. “Lovers Haters and Others” runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm July 6 - August 4. Family First Sports Park is having a girls basketball camp July 9-10 for varsity and junior varsity players. Boys camp will be held July 14-15 for both teams. Cost for the camps is $90 per player residential and $50 per player for commuters. All residential players receive meals and a free Fun Center pass. Coaches stay for free. Eight Great Tuesday’s is a free concert series on Tuesday nights at the Pepsi Amphitheatre inside Liberty Park. Here is the lineup for 8 Great Tuesday’s for 2007: July 10 - Big Leg Emma, Yankee Zydeco Company, Tiger Maple String Band, July 17 - Ana Popovic, July 24 - Devon Allman’s Honeytribe, July 31 - Dave Stevens Big Band, August 7 - PovertyNeck Hillbillies, August 14 - Jakes Blues, August 21 - Tab Benoit and August 28 - Big Brother and The Holding Company.

The summer Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, begins Thursday, July 12, with a performance by Japanese carillonneur Toru Takao. The following Thursday, July 19, the featured musicians will be the duo Ana and Sara Elias, Portugese sisters who perform under the name Lvsitanvs. Tin-Shi Tam, university carillonneur at Iowa State, will close the series on Thursday, July 26. All three performances will begin at 7 pm, and are free and open to the public. Seating is on the lawn of the John M Lilley Library, so concert goers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Refreshments will be served.

The Wattsburg Erie County Battle of the Bands and Music Festival will be held Friday evening July 27 and Saturday July 28 at the Erie County Fairgrounds.

The Counting Crows, Live and Collective Soul will play a concert at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA on July 31 as part of “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Triple Play Ballpark Tour.” Tickets go on sale June 2 at 10 am. Tickets can be purchased at the SeaWolves box office at Jerry Uht Park and on SeaWolves.com. Children under 12 get in FREE with each paid adult ticket holder.

The Motorcycle, Car, Boat and Truck show called the Lake Erie Classic will be held August 3-5 at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field.

Actually HANDS spent the money on those three homes in Little Italy. The City gave them the money. Plus the city will provide subsidies for the purchase. Cost to build around $130,000 each. Average cost of homes in area under $50,000 oops!
