I know some strange facts and fun stories about Erie but I didn’t know that Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry was afraid of cows until I read it in the The Nelson Family blog. I’m guessing it was on a marker near the Perry Monument on Presque Isle State Park. From the War of 1812, People and Stories -
Commodore Perry was tall and well-proportioned; “every inch a man” according to some who knew him. He was also capable of inspiring tremendous loyalty in those who served under him. He had one strange phobia however, he was terrified of cows. He was said to prefer slogging miles through knee-deep mud rather than face a cow.

One more cow story. President McKinley once attended the Allegheny College, but was expelled for sneaking a cow into the Bentley Bell Tower. (Ed. note: Apparently cows can go UP stairs, but have a lot more trouble with down. The folklore also suggests that McKinley’s cow needed to be brought down from the bell tower “one steak at a time.”)

Presque Isle Downs and Casino held a press conference yesterday. The casino is running about 15 percent ahead of projections. The total construction spending will be in the neighborhood of $280 million. They also announced that simulcast racing and betting will begin in mid August. Broadcast races will be shown on 170 flat plasma screens throughout the facility. Live Thoroughbred racing will take place Wednesday through Monday throughout the month of September. On July 4, the casino will give away hats to the first 1,000 Players Card Club members beginning at 9 am.

I'm pretty sure that cow thing is a myth - for me, the better (and provable) "fact" is that for five years (1870-1875)female students had $6 added to their fees "to cover the extra costs incurred by the complexity of their nervous systems." ;)
