Erie PA News and Events for Monday July 2, 2007
Dennis is having computer problems, but reports he should be back tomorrow. Instead, you get my (Mike) ham-fisted attempt to do what he does. Believe me folks, it’s much harder then it looks.
If you’re making your 4th of July plans, don’t forget that Mercyhurst will not be hosting its Old Fashioned Fourth event and will not be hosting fireworks. If you’re in the Erie area, head down to the bayfront to watch the fireworks. Catch it from any of the bayfront hot spots like Liberty Park (here’s a tip: park at the library/intermodal center and catch the shuttle) or catch it from Presque Isle. The fireworks launch at 9:45 p.m., Liberty Park opens at 6:00 p.m. If you have a boat, you could watch it from the bay, just make sure you invite me (Mike - email). Here’s a video about Boom Over the Bay.
You can also rock Waldameer’s fireworks displays. They run Tuesday and Wednesday nights, weather permitting. According to the large scary sign as you enter the park, you have to have a ride-a-rama to get into the park after 6 p.m. the night of the fireworks, though you might be able to catch them from the TREC.
If you’re in North East, Mercyhurst North East will still have fireworks.
In the Meadville area, the great Movies at Meadville will have a fireworks display on July 8. When The Movies did this at Memorial Day, it was a big success. On a side note, the Movies at Meadville now does online ticketing with no additional fees or charges. Come on Tinseltown, drop the stupid extra charges.
eDynaQuote, the Erie-based provider of Internet competitive bidding services owned by the Center for eBusiness and Advanced Information Technology (eBizITPA), has been purchased by Vista Auctions, LLC, a State College, Pa. company with principals in San Diego, Calif. and Tarrytown, N.Y. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Living Sea returns for one week only at the TREC Big Green Screen. The Living Sea takes you to the world’s oceans, traveling to Palau, Hawaii, California, Oregon, Alaska, Nova Scotia, and the Red Sea. Explore the mysterious depths and come face to face with life-sized humpback whales, swim with thousands of jellyfish, surf in Hawaii, deep-sea dive in Palau and see what strange creatures lurk 3,000 feet down through the ocean depths where sunlight never penetrates. Music by Sting; narrated by Meryl Streep. Showtimes at 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, & 6pm, and it runs until July 7th.
A faculty team from Allegheny College has been selected through a national competition to participate in a series of events to enhance the teaching of undergraduate public health education. The events are part of the first joint education collaboration of the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) and the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR). The Allegheny College faculty team is composed of Assistant Professor of Environmental Science Caryl Waggett, Associate Professor of Geology Ron Cole and Health Professions Advisor Kirsten Peterson, who are leading an interdisciplinary effort to integrate environmental and public health concepts into the curriculum at Allegheny College.
There’s an interesting poll over at Jack’s Erie Media-Go-Round about whether the Erie Times-News should have printed the name of the woman who was found dead in her home with her 2-year-old still inside. Read more…
The Akron Aeros took down the Erie SeaWolves on Sunday night at Jerry Uht Park with a comeback 13-11 win. The ‘Wolves and Aeros meet in game three of a four-game set on Monday night at Jerry Uht Park with a 7:05 First Pitch. RHP Jair Jurrjens (3-3, 3.54 ERA) takes the mound for the ‘Wolves against LHP Reid Santos (5-1, 1.99 ERA). Monday is also BUCK NIGHT! Fans can get into the ballpark for just $3 and once inside it’s $1 Pepsi soft drinks, popcorn, Smith’s Hot Dogs and beer!

just an FYI - the waldameer sign requires a ride-a-rama for all kids under 18 without a parent with them ... this is to eliminate the "ruckus" that used to rule the park the night of the fireworks in years past! I still dont take my daughters though - nothing as family friendly as Mercyhurst for the fourth... we will sure miss it!

Tbere is a safety zone of 100 yards that will be enforced by the Coast Guard around the barge that will be launching the fireworks. If your boat gets within that zone you face fines and possible arrest.
