Erie PA News and Events Tuesday July 24, 2007
The last time I wrote about Keeping Erie’s Environment Protected (KEEP). I received harassing phone calls and home and work, and a harassing email. The group is opposed to the Erie Renewable Energy proposed tire to energy plant. They held a meeting at the library which was attended by around 100 people. They would have you believe the plant will cause everything from cancer to autism. Just last week there were two tire fires in Erie because of so many tires lying around. Erie Renewable Energy would be using “fluidized-bed gasification” technology, not just burning them.
In 2003, more than 290 million scrap tires were generated in the U S with 130 million scrap tires used as tire derived fuel (TDF). Using all scrap times as TDF would save the equivalent to 14 million barrels of crude oil. Tires produce the same amount of energy as oil and 25 percent more energy than coal. The ash residues from TDF may contain a lower heavy metals content than some coals.
From the US Environmental Protection Agency - “Based on over 15 years of experience with more than 80 individual facilities, EPA recognizes that the use of tire-derived fuels is a viable alternative to the use of fossil fuels.”
The $100 million Erie Renewable Energy plant project will create 200 construction jobs, about 50-80 full time jobs and produce enough energy to supply electricity to 50,000 homes.
A belated welcome back to sk0t.

U S Rep. Phil English announced the inclusion of $1 million for the expansion of energy-efficient diesel locomotives at GE Transportation in HR 2641, the Energy and Water Fiscal Year 2008 Appropriations Bill. The funding would allow GE Transportation to launch a research program to develop a cleaner and more efficient diesel engine. The proposed program would be a collaborative effort between GE Transportation and Penn State University. Over a period of four years, team members would research, develop and conduct a full scale locomotive demonstration by 2011. The $1 million allotted in HR 2641 would help to fund the project for 2008.
I stumbled on the site for the George Carroll House, bed and breakfast at 4th and Peach. Rooms are currently a very reasonable $65 a night.
The Erie SeaWolves snapped a two game slide on Monday night with a 4-2 win over the Trenton Thunder at Waterfront Park. The SeaWolves and Thunder continue their three-game series on Tuesday night at Waterfront Park…7:05 First Pitch. RHP Andrew Kown (3-6, 3.91 ERA) takes the mound for the ‘Wolves against RHP Kevin Whelan (3-0, 2.90 ERA). Whelan was formerly in the Detroit Tigers system and was part of the deal that sent three prospects to the Yankees in exchange for Gary Sheffield.
The Syracuse Crunch announced that they have signed Goaltender Adam Munro to an American Hockey League contract. Originally the Chicago Blackhawks’ first round pick in the 2001 NHL entry draft, Munro has appeared in 17 NHL games going 3-5-2 with a 3.30 goals against average and one shutout. Munro played major junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Erie Otters and Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds before turning pro.

In regards to Erie Renewable Energy - I think it's a great idea, especially when you see not only the mountains of tires, but the scraps of tractor trailer tires on the highways. Do you know if they'll be recycling those as well?

A company wants to put in a tire energy processing plant. Neighbors of the plant complain because they do not want it in their neighborhood. Stangely, there are two "unrelated" tire fires in other Erie neighborhoods, thus highlighting the dangers of superfluous tires to the rest of the city. Hmmm, now who could profit from these "unrelated" tire fires? The neighbors who don't want the tire energy plant or the tire energy plant?
An increase in these unrelated mysterious fires might just highlight the problem of of excess tires lying around. Who could save us from these dangers of uncontrolled tire fires? Why the friendly neighborhood tire energy processing plant, of course! This plot could come directly from a Mark Trail comic.
