Three stupid teenage boys are luck to be alive after playing in the waters of Mill Creek at the entrance of the Mill Creek Tube. The Mill Creek Tube is a nearly 3 mile concrete pipe that carries the waters of the creek under the city streets to Presque Isle Bay. One boy was rescued near the entrance of the tube. A second was pulled out through a manhole 4 city block away. And another had the ride of his life traveling the entire distance of the nearly 3 mile long tube to the Waste Water Treatment Plant on the bayfront.
Heavy rains caused the usually slow flowing creek to more closely resemble waters you would associate with white water rafting.
The Mill Creek Tube, a 24’x 18’ reinforced concrete and steel tube, was built after a 1915 flood took 3 dozen lives and wiped out 313 homes and businesses.
