Gene ‘Tom’ Robarts tonight will be celebrating the class reunion of Erie Strong Vincent High School Class of 1962. He won’t be there in person. Robarts has ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. He’ll be joining his friends from over 1,000 miles away near Tampa Florida via a web cam.
The Great Erie County Board of Realtors released the monthly Erie County property sales. The figures include all county property sales in which a transfer tax was paid. In July 2007, there were 498 sales for $84,760,222. This compares to July 2006 when there were 474 sales worth $63,688,509. A couple of large transactions distorted the figures for this July. The Tops plaza on West 26th was sold for $15,977,069 and LECOM bought the former Rent-Way headquarters for $3,946,220.
The Invest Erie Development Corporation was denied a $1 million state grant for a proposed grocery store at 19th and Parade. The groups said they had the necessary $1 million in financing but the governors office hasn’t satisfied with what they were presented. No surprise. I don’t think the group ever had $1 of private money. They did however mange to spend around $1.2 million in federal, state and local grant money since they began ‘working’ on the project. All they have to show for it is a deed for the vacant property.
Seaport Management, and its associated company Short Sea Lines, has pulled out of a planned Port Burwell and Fairport Harbor, Ohio cargo ferry service. That’s good news for The Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority which has been working on cargo ferry service to Nanticoke, Ontario.
Great Lakes Feeder Lines, owned by the Erie PA based Erie Management Group, started a cargo ferry service between US and Canada this shipping season out of Burlington, Ontario carrying all types of cargo throughout the Great Lakes, St Lawrence River and East Coast regions.
Passenger ferry service from Erie to Port Dover, Ontario is supposed to start trial runs this Fall with twice daily service in 2008. Willard Marine is building a 65 foot boat will be able to carry 46 passengers. The Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority eventually plans to purchase a 190 foot fast ferry, which will carry up to 46 cars and up to 248 passengers.
The cable TV series, “The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman,” returns for its second season at 11:30 pm Sunday on IFC. The series stars Laura Kightlinger who was born in Erie, PA and later moved to Jamestown NY. Kightlinger insists her Mother gave birth while visiting the Erie Zoo. She was a cast member of “Saturday Night Live” in 1995 and later had recurring roles in HBO’s “Lucky Louie” and NBC’s “Will and Grace.” She dated Jack Black from 1997 until 2005.
The Erie County Youth Activities Coalition has good information on things kids can do in the area.
Richard J Parks has left MacDonald Illig Jones and Britton and joined the Sharon office of Pietragallo Bosick and Gordon. Park deals mainly with creditors rights (banks).
As part of his effort to create jobs and opportunity in the 3rd district, US Rep Phil English announced his Fifth Annual Business Development Conference and Expo will take place August 7 at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie, Pennsylvania. This year, the conference will feature Walter Bastian, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Hemisphere at the Department of Commerce, as its special guest. The event hours are 9 am to 12:30 pm. A luncheon hosted by the US Commercial Service and Gannon University Small Business Development Center with guest speaker Frank Reynolds, President of International Projects Inc will follow the seminar and will last until 2 pm. Peter Malize has joined Parente Randolph as a junior accountant in the firm’s Wellsboro PA office. Malize earned his accounting degree from Edinboro University.
Malin Bergquist has completed a merger with Diefenbach Delio Kearney and DeDionisio of Erie. The merger creates a CPA firm with 18 partners and 100 employees in offices in Ross, Jeannette, Greensburg and Erie.
The Erie SeaWolves fell in the series opener against the Connecticut Defenders 7-5 on Friday night at Dodd Stadium. Despite the loss, the ‘Wolves remain in a first place tie with the Akron Aeros atop the Southern Division. The SeaWolves and Defenders meet in the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday night at Dodd Stadium…7:05 First Pitch. RHP Andrew Kown (4-6, 3.72 ERA) takes the mound for the ‘Wolves against RHP Dave McKae (4-2, 4.25 ERA).
David Arnold has been named defensive coordinator at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Arnold served three seasons (2004-2006) as defensive back and special teams coach at fellow NCAA Div II member Gannon University in Erie, Pa. Arnold was also head coach of the Erie Freeze (1-13) of the American Indoor Football Association.
Mercyhurst College grad Dave Wrigley has signed a contract with Landsberg, Germany. The Landsberg hockey team plays in the Second Division.
The United We Stand Theater Troupe presents “There She Goes,” the zany and hilarious British comedy written by Thomas Amo and directed by Craig Schneider. Show dates are this evening and August 10 and 11 at 8 pm. The location is the St Patrick’s Cauley Auditorium, 215 East 4th Street. Plenty of free parking, and air conditioned facility. Michael Acri Boxing Promotions Inc and the Erie Seawolves in association with Budweiser present Boxing at the Ball Park I at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, Pennsylvania tonight, Saturday August 4, 2007, show time 7:30 PM. Headlining the event will be Sugar Ray Narh 20-1, 17 KO’s ranked 14th in the IBF, will take on Colombian Luis Bolano 42-8, 32 KO’s in a eight round Lightweight bout. Dan Rice Days will be held today in Girard, PA. A new addition to the celebration will be an antique road show to be held at the Culberston House. Entertainment for this year include Tennesse Back Porch, Presque Isle Chapter Sweet Adelines, along with DJ Bill Page and an Erie Zoo representative will have animals for viewing. There will be live entertainment, refreshments and door prizes.
The Motorcycle, Car, Boat and Truck show called the Lake Erie Classic will be held today and Sunday at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field.

The Battles Museum will be the backdrop for Battle for the Yellow House, a Civil War encampment and battle re-enactment August 4-5. Scheduled in conjunction with Dan Rice Days, the re-enactment is expected to bring in approximately 200 re-enactors. Battle for the Yellow House will include open camp hours, drilling and firing demonstrations, two battles, candlelight tours, a Sunday morning church service and a book signing. The Lake Erie Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association will host its 2007 steak fry on Saturday, August 4, at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The annual event, which will be held at the Wilson Picnic Grove on the campus of Penn State Behrend, begins with a social hour at 5 pm, followed by the dinner’s signature “grill your own” steak fry at 6 pm. The fund-raiser is open to all Penn State alumni. Proceeds benefit the Lake Erie Chapter’s Robert W Sparks scholarship fund, which has awarded more than $55,000 to local students in the past 16 years. The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania 25th Anniversary Celebration will be held Saturday, August 4 at the Erie Bayfront Convention Center. Tickets are $35.
Scott and Kim McClelland take the stage together this summer for the first time since 1996. The McClelland’s met 20 years ago in the summer of 1987 at the Erie Playhouse. As a way of celebrating their life in the theatre, they have created “Lovers Haters and Others.” The Roadhouse Theatre show is homage to the great love affairs written for the stage. The Manufacturers’ Association and Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority released a schedule of events, parking and shuttle information, as well as rules and restrictions for the Liberty Park-Pepsi Amphitheater, which will go into effect August 10-12 for the first Roar on the Shore bike rally benefiting the John Kanzius Cancer Research Fund.
The rally kicks off Friday, August 10, with registration for the Bringing in the Roar bike parade at 3 pm at Presque Isle Downs and Casino, located off Interstate 90 Exit 27 in Summit Township. At approximately 5:30 pm, the parade led by grand marshal Peter Fonda will make its way north on Perry Highway (Route 97) and Glenwood Park Avenue (Route 505) to State Street in Erie. The bike parade continues north on State Street, then west on the Bayfront Parkway to Liberty Park. Please note: No one under 18 will be allowed entry to the park unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Representatives of the waterfowl organizations, individual sportsmen and the public are invited to attend a briefing on Friday, Aug 10, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Northwest Pennsylvania Duck Hunters Association, on the status of Atlantic Flyway waterfowl populations and proposed preliminary federal frameworks for the 2007-08 hunting seasons. The briefing will begin at 1 pm, in Room 112 of the Tom Ridge Education Center at Presque Isle State Park in Erie.
The Erie Chamber Orchestra, in residency at Gannon University and under the direction of Bruce Morton Wright, will perform its 24th annual summer concerts entitled “Music in the Air” on the campus of Villa Maria Academy, 2403 West 8th Street Erie, PA. On Friday, August 10 they will perform a Classical Music Night and on Saturday, August 11 they will perform a Pop Music Night. Both concerts will be performed at 8 pm. The concerts are FREE of charge, with seating and are on a first come, first served basis. There will have a number of chairs at the site, but you are encouraged to bring your own chairs or blankets. In the case of rain, these concerts will be performed in the auditorium of Villa Maria Academy.
Titled “Local Government and the Erie Economy,” the 2007 Economic Research Institute of Erie (ERIE) conference will address topics relevant to Erie and its surrounding communities, including the debate about consolidating the area’s local governments and the smoking ban. The institute’s sixth annual conference will be held on August 14, in McGarvey Commons, located in the Reed Union Building at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The cost to attend this year’s conference is $149 and includes printed materials, breakfast and lunch. A reduced rate of $75 is available for nonprofit, government and economic development officials. Despite EMG and GLFL's claims, there has not been one sailing yet out of Burlington, Ontario by Great Lakes Feeder Lines. Unfortunately this all seems to be a farce.
