Erie PA News and Events Monday August 6, 2007
Chrysler has named former Home Depot CEO Bob Nardelli as the new chairman and CEO of the automaker. Nardelli has pretty strong ties to Erie. Chrysler might not build a plant here but a number of Erie companies supply Detroit automakers. Nardelli got Tom Ridge of Erie appointed to the board of directors of Home Depot, was President and CEO of GE Transportation in Erie PA from 1992-95, and received the Distinguished Pennsylvanian Award in 1995 from Gannon University. At GE Transportation, Nardelli began a program of hiring junior military officers because as he said “few people were willing to move to Dreary Erie, Pa.” Jack Welch soon expanded the program throughout GE.
Open your heart, your mind, and your home to an International High School student for one school year. After celebrating their sixtieth year in international education as a non-profit organization, the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) remains highly committed to their mission: “To help people gain understanding, acquire knowledge and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world”. Each student in the program is individually interviewed to ensure that they have the appropriate maturity level to be a successful participant in the program. They require all students to have a “C+” average in order to be accepted into the program and also require their students maintain this minimum grade average throughout their stay (allowing for a short adjustment period). Students have taken an English proficiency test to prove their ability to be academically successful while attending an American high school. Tutoring will be provided for a struggling student. CIEE strongly believes that by volunteering their time to community service, students will become more involved in the American way of life. Therefore, its require that they participate in a “Community Service Project” (8 hours per semester) to ensure that they reciprocate the exchange and benefits to their host family, school, and their community. Students are between 15-18 years old, have their own medical insurance, and spending money. There is no better time than NOW to learn more about our neighbors in the world.
