Erie PA News and Events Tuesday August 7, 2007

In Erie County last year there was just under 650 foreclosures. The latest figure I heard for Erie County and Northwest PA in 2007 is over 1,400 foreclosures. Yipes. Get help before it happens. Call your lender. Refinance through another lender. Take action. Do something. The National Association of REALTORS has a brochure in pfd called Learn How to Avoid Foreclosure and Keep Your Home. Give it a read.

The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania is moving from their location at 1703 Ash St to a larger building near the Veshecco Industrial Park (West 12th and Greengarden).

Russell V Combs Sr has been named executive director of the Gannon University Erie Technology Incubator. The incubator will open in Spring of 2008 in the former Boys and Girls Club, 130 West 8th St.

According to the 2008 Pennsylvania Manufacturers Register, an industrial guide published annually by Manufacturers’ News, Erie is home to 394 manufacturing plants employing 23,346.

Erie Indemnity (Erie Insurance) (NASDAQ: ERIE) on Monday revealed that it has purchased a total of 1,903,201 shares of the company’s Class A nonvoting common stock from the estate of Frank William Hirt and the 2004 Revocable Trust for a total purchase price of $99.04 million or $52.04 per share. Frank William Hirt, the former Chairman of the company’s Board of Directors, died on July 13, 2007. The company purchased 1.86 million shares of its Class A nonvoting common stock and 20 shares of the company’s Class B voting common stock, that were converted to 48,000 Class A shares prior to the sale to the Company. The company has stated that its Board authorized this purchase separate from the company’s current stock repurchase program, which at July 31, 2007, had $83.5 million of remaining repurchase authorization.

Football Season will be starting soon. What will you be watching it on? The Preseason Reason to Give Blood promotion will reward one lucky donor in Erie County with a 40” LCD High Definition Television from the Peach Street Wal-Mart just in time for football season. The winner also receives a football party with pizza and wings for 20 people donated by On Deck Bar and Grill. This contest runs through August 30th and is intended to help the blood bank maintain a safe blood supply during the month of August, which is usually the single worst month of the year for the blood supply. There is a still a critical blood shortage in our region and across much of the United States. New and lapsed donors are encouraged to come and save lives of local patients. Heavy weekend usage keeps supply dangerously low. All donors are strongly encouraged to donate at the Community Blood Bank, 2646 Peach Street. Community Blood Bank is open from 9-6 Monday through Friday and until 7:30 pm Tuesday and Saturday 9 am-12:30 pm. Photo ID is required to give blood.
