Bob Casillo was appointed to the Erie School Board. Casillo takes the seat of Becca Martin who took a job out of state. Casillo is a former Erie Democratic Party chairman and as part of the good ol’ boy network he received 7 of 8 board member votes. Ned Smith, who voted against him, is on the November ballot along with Casillo.
TechGenii, Inc, an industry leader in digital media and interactivity, today announced that it will provide mobile alerts and mobile voting during the Eerie Horror Film Festival, October 10th through October 14th, 2007, at the Erie Playhouse in Erie, PA. TechGenii will add mobile alerts throughout the festival so that horror fans will know film show times. TechGenii will also have a festival audience award, where horror fans can vote for their favorite horror film; the winner will be announced at midnight on Sunday, October 14th, 2007.
State Rep Jesse White (D-Washington/Beaver/Allegheny) wants Tim Hortons to come to the 46th Legislative District. As White says in his blog “they may be our only hope in the losing battle our society is fighting with Starbucks.” All Tim Horton’s in Pennsylvania are in Erie which he says “further cements Erie’s cultural superiority.” And after all Tim Horton himself played for the Pittsburgh Hornets of the AHL (1949-52) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (1971-72).
Many of Gannon University and Villa Maria College’s more than 32,000 successful alumni, who live in every state and in 48 countries, are giving back to Gannon University because they credit their education with transforming their lives, said President, Antoine M Garibaldi, PhD. Gannon’s gifts during the 2006-07 Fiscal Year, which ended on June 30, 2007, totaled nearly $5 million ($4,959,188), which was the largest amount raised in Gannon’s history.
The Erie campus of Mercyhurst College will welcome six new faculty members to its ranks when the 2007-08 academic year begins later this month. The Erie faculty and their disciplines are Mark Dobeck, PhD, business; Suzanne Godboldt, PhD, criminal justice; Charles Magalhaes, CEC, Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Management/ Culinary Arts; Stephen Ousley, PhD, anthropology/archaeology; Rondal Scott Tomlison, PhD, music; and Dawn Wozneak, MS, intelligence studies.
The Erie SeaWolves opened up a 6 game homestand on Tuesday night at Jerry Uht Park with a 6-3 win over the New Britain Rock Cats. The victory puts Erie back to a season high 17 games over .500 and the team remains one game back of first place Akron. The SeaWolves and Rock Cats continue their series on Wednesday night at Jerry Uht Park…7:05 First Pitch. Eddie Bonine (12-5, 3.44 ERA), the Eastern League leader in wins, takes the mound for the ‘Wolves against LHP Ryan Mullins (1-2, 3.51 ERA).
Tom Parry has been named passing coordinator and wide receivers coach at Kentucky Wesleyan. Parry had been wide receivers coach at Gannon University. He had also coached at Mercyhurst and Edinboro.
The Gem City Concert Band will offer a two-hour performance this Thursday, August 9th, at the North East, PA, Heard Park Bandstand. The concert, sponsored by the North East News Journal, begins at 6:30 and will feature 40+ area musicians performing such songs as Blue Tango, Amazing Grace, Barnum and Bailey’s Favorites, and the Colonel Bogey March. The concert is free and open to the public. Bring a blanket or chair to enjoy the show. In case of rain, the concert will be held indoors at the Cultural Center on Vine Street. The Director’s Circle Theater is presenting “Drama Queens” beginning this Thursday, Aug 9. The show will run Thurs, Fri, and Sat nights for 3 weeks ending August 25. Tickets can be reserved by calling: 451-1153.
The Manufacturers’ Association and Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority released a schedule of events, parking and shuttle information, as well as rules and restrictions for the Liberty Park-Pepsi Amphitheater, which will go into effect August 10-12 for the first Roar on the Shore bike rally benefiting the John Kanzius Cancer Research Fund.
The rally kicks off Friday, August 10, with registration for the Bringing in the Roar bike parade at 3 pm at Presque Isle Downs and Casino, located off Interstate 90 Exit 27 in Summit Township. At approximately 5:30 pm, the parade led by grand marshal Peter Fonda will make its way north on Perry Highway (Route 97) and Glenwood Park Avenue (Route 505) to State Street in Erie. The bike parade continues north on State Street, then west on the Bayfront Parkway to Liberty Park. Please note: No one under 18 will be allowed entry to the park unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Representatives of the waterfowl organizations, individual sportsmen and the public are invited to attend a briefing on Friday, Aug 10, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Northwest Pennsylvania Duck Hunters Association, on the status of Atlantic Flyway waterfowl populations and proposed preliminary federal frameworks for the 2007-08 hunting seasons. The briefing will begin at 1 pm, in Room 112 of the Tom Ridge Education Center at Presque Isle State Park in Erie.
The Erie Chamber Orchestra, in residency at Gannon University and under the direction of Bruce Morton Wright, will perform its 24th annual summer concerts entitled “Music in the Air” on the campus of Villa Maria Academy, 2403 West 8th Street Erie, PA. On Friday, August 10 they will perform a Classical Music Night and on Saturday, August 11 they will perform a Pop Music Night. Both concerts will be performed at 8 pm. The concerts are FREE of charge, with seating and are on a first come, first served basis. There will have a number of chairs at the site, but you are encouraged to bring your own chairs or blankets. In the case of rain, these concerts will be performed in the auditorium of Villa Maria Academy.
The Erie PA Sport Fishing Association 2nd annual Walleye and Steelhead Pro-Am Fishing Tournament will be held August 11 and 12. Captain’s meeting, weigh-ins, and award ceremonies will be held at JR’s On The Bay, 726 West Bayfront Pkwy.
Titled “Local Government and the Erie Economy,” the 2007 Economic Research Institute of Erie (ERIE) conference will address topics relevant to Erie and its surrounding communities, including the debate about consolidating the area’s local governments and the smoking ban. The institute’s sixth annual conference will be held on August 14, in McGarvey Commons, located in the Reed Union Building at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The cost to attend this year’s conference is $149 and includes printed materials, breakfast and lunch. A reduced rate of $75 is available for nonprofit, government and economic development officials.
