Mercyhurst sophomore Teri Rhodes gave birth in her campus apartment. Police found the baby dead and in a plastic bag. An autopsy was performed to see if the baby was alive at birth or if she had a miscarriage. There are many more questions than answers at this point.

Pennsylvania Housing and Redevelopment Assistance funding grants have been issued to the following: City of Erie Downtown Erie Revitalization Plan $300,000; Koehler Brewer Square — Phase Two $500,000; Zoey Meadows Project $397,000; City of Erie, My Father’s House of Erie Project $30,000; Erie Redevelopment Authority - Mercantile Building Project Predevelopment $50,000, Mercantile Building, Midtown Project $500,000; Downtown Improvement District Project $300,000; Erie County - County Brownfield Projects $126,915, County Brownfield Projects $147,224, County Revitalization Projects $443,833, Erie County Weatherization Project $97,850, Erie County Housing Rehabilitation Project $87,920; SafeNet DOUBLES Project $108,511; and Borough of Waterford Oak Haven Apartments Project $105,570.

Sophomore Jarrod Persun of Erie, Pa was part of the Clarkson University’s Timber Bridge Team which took third place for “Most Innovative Design” in the 2007 National Timber Bridge Design Competition. Each team is required to design, build and test wood bridges on their home campus.

Blue Vase Financial Network, an independently owned financial services firm that operates as a “regional team” within Financial Network Investment Corporation, a broker-dealer of ING, has announced that it has changed its name to BenchMark Financial Network. Preparations are underway for several other locations in the region including an office in Erie.

Erie native Denise Gorman has been hired as a Pre-K Teacher at Wakulla (Fla) Education Center. She graduated from the University of West Florida.

Erie SeaWolves pitcher Jair Jurrjens was called by the Detroit Tigers. He’ll make a 100 mile trip to Cleveland and make the start on Wednesday against the Indians.

Jake’s Blues, Guitar Zack, and the Jungle play tonight at 8 Great Tuesdays. Eight Great Tuesday’s is the FREE popular concert series on Tuesday nights at the Pepsi Amphitheatre inside Liberty Park. It begins at 6 pm.

The Erie Art Museum opened Speculation on Nature: works by Lawrence Baker and will be on exhibit through Monday, October 15 in the Erie Art Museum Frame Shop Gallery, 423 State Street. A public open reception on Gallery Night Friday, August 24 from 7-10 pm. The Erie Art Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm. Admission is free for members, free on Wednesdays, $4 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and students and $2 for children under 12.


The next Erie Blogger get together will be held today, Tuesday, August 14, at 7 PM at On Deck, 1137 E 11th St, Erie PA. This is open to people who blog, people interested in blogging in the future, and anyone who just wants to hang out and enjoy a cold beer.

Titled “Local Government and the Erie Economy,” the 2007 Economic Research Institute of Erie (ERIE) conference will address topics relevant to Erie and its surrounding communities, including the debate about consolidating the area’s local governments and the smoking ban. The institute’s sixth annual conference will be held on August 14, in McGarvey Commons, located in the Reed Union Building at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The cost to attend this year’s conference is $149 and includes printed materials, breakfast and lunch. A reduced rate of $75 is available for nonprofit, government and economic development officials. Celebrate Erie 2007 takes place August 16-19. The FREE festival takes place along 8 blocks in downtown Erie. CelebrateErie will once again provide a marketplace for interesting and diverse art, musical entertainment, theatrical performance, dance, food, spectacle, children’s activities, and oddities. Last century the festival was know as We Love Erie Days.

On August 21 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Millcreek Community Hospital Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program will present a total joint replacement workshop at the LECOM campus on West Grandview Boulevard. Holy Trinity Catholic Church located at 2220 Reed Street in Erie will host the Zabawa Polish Summer Festival August 24-26. Polish foods, polka music, and traditional dancing. Hours are: Friday, 5 to 10 pm; Saturday, 2 to 10 pm; Sunday, noon to 6 pm. For more information, call 814-456-0671.

The Fuller Hose Company of North East will sponsor the annual North East National Rib Festival at Gravel Pit Park August 24-26. Automobile shows, crafters, petting zoo, live entertainment, and plenty of food. For more details, call (814) 725-9211.

‘Winds on the Lake’, a professional wind and percussion ensemble, will present a FREE outdoor concert titled “Salute to America” at 3 pm on Sunday, Aug 26. Fittingly, the performance will take place in the gazebo of the Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home, which is located on Erie’s bayfront at 560 E Third St. In the event of rain, the concert will be held inside the facility. Winds on the Lake performs under the direction of Gary Viebranz, director of instrumental ensembles at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, and Matthew Inkster, director of bands at West Virginia’s West Liberty State College. In addition to patriotic favorites, “Salute to America” will include a performance of Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” and a special tribute to the armed forces.

The 11th annual Erie German Heritage Festival will be held at the Shriner Club, 38th and Zuck, September 1-2.

Family First Sports Park is hosting the Challenge Cup soccer tournament September 1-2. The National Premier High School Challenge Cup will feature some of the top high school boys and girls teams in the nation. Every hotel room within 50 miles of Erie is booked that weekend.

Where economic freedom rings, political freedom is sure to follow, says an economist who will speak next month at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The Sam and Irene Black School of Business will host Robert Lawson PhD, co-author of the annual Economic Freedom of the World report, for a lecture and question and answer session on Monday, Sept 10. Lawson’s presentation will take place at 5 pm in the lecture hall of the Research and Economic Development Center (REDC). It is free and open to the public.

The Northwest Regional Planning and Development Commission is sponsoring meetings with18 overseas trade representatives September 12-13 in Erie. One-on-one appointments on September 13 will run from 8 am - 11:30 am and 12:30 pm - 3 pm.
