There is a sale pending on the former GTE / Verizon building at 10th and Sassafras Streets. It will be very interesting to see who the new owner will be and what they plan to do with the nearly 100,000 sq ft building.
Lucille and Larry began their cross-country “Trek for Breast Cancer” in Anacortes, Washington on July 1. The couple spent Friday evening and part of Saturday in Erie. The couple will pedal 4,500 miles before they complete their trip in NYC. Their goal is to make a $25,000 contribution to “Sisters Foundation Fighting Breast Cancer.” It is a non-profit foundation providing financial and emotional support to breast cancer patients.
Jason Haney and Craig Cacini, both of Erie, Pa, were among the first to get eliminated at an American Idol tryout at the North Charleston (SC) Coliseum.
David Arnold, DO, joined the active Waldo County (Maine) General Hospital medical staff as an anesthesiologist. Arnold received his bachelor of science degree from Penn State Erie, The Behrend College and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA.

The Erie SeaWolves swept a double header from Altoona and took over first place in the Southern Division from Akron. Making his Double-A debut, Erie Seawolves’ right-hander Burke Badenhop carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning and turned in a complete-game, two-hitter as the Altoona Curve were silenced in a 2-1 Erie win. In the second game, Erie starter Randor Bierd retired the first 15 batters of the ballgame and the SeaWolves one-hit the Curve in a 3-0 game two shutout victory. The series will conclude on Sunday evening at 6:05 pm. Curve righty Kip Bouknight (11-4, 3.72) will make the start against RHP Eddie Bonine (12-5, 3.68) for the SeaWolves.
Cameron Maybin only played for the Erie SeaWolves for a week before getting the call from the Detroit Tigers. On Saturday he got his first major league hit in the 3rd inning off of Rodger Clemens. In the 5th he got his first home run off of Clemens, a 435 foot shot to dead center.
“Miss Saigon” is being performed at the Erie Playhouse today and Aug 23-26.
On August 21 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Millcreek Community Hospital Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program will present a total joint replacement workshop at the LECOM campus on West Grandview Boulevard. The Fuller Hose Company of North East will sponsor the annual North East National Rib Festival at Gravel Pit Park August 24-26. Automobile shows, crafters, petting zoo, live entertainment, and plenty of food. For more details, call (814) 725-9211.
Winds on the Lake, a professional wind and percussion ensemble, will present a FREE outdoor concert titled “Salute to America” at 3 pm on Sunday, Aug 26. Fittingly, the performance will take place in the gazebo of the Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home, which is located on Erie’s bayfront at 560 E Third St. In the event of rain, the concert will be held inside the facility. Winds on the Lake performs under the direction of Gary Viebranz, director of instrumental ensembles at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, and Matthew Inkster, director of bands at West Virginia’s West Liberty State College. In addition to patriotic favorites, “Salute to America” will include a performance of Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” and a special tribute to the armed forces.
The 2007 Erie County Fair will be held August 26 to September 2.
The 11th annual Erie German Heritage Festival will be held at the Shriner Club, 38th and Zuck, September 1-2.
Family First Sports Park is hosting the Challenge Cup soccer tournament September 1-2. The National Premier High School Challenge Cup will feature some of the top high school boys and girls teams in the nation. Every hotel room within 50 miles of Erie is booked that weekend.
The 7th annual triathlon on Presque Isle State Park will take place Saturday, September 8, 2007, the first Saturday after Labor Day. All segments of the triathlon…the swim, the bike and the run…will start, transition and finish at Beach 6. PI TRI 07 is open to individuals and 2-3 person relay teams.
Where economic freedom rings, political freedom is sure to follow, says an economist who will speak next month at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The Sam and Irene Black School of Business will host Robert Lawson PhD, co-author of the annual Economic Freedom of the World report, for a lecture and question and answer session on Monday, Sept 10. Lawson’s presentation will take place at 5 pm in the lecture hall of the Research and Economic Development Center (REDC). It is free and open to the public.

The famed Cavani String Quartet returns to Erie in September to open the 18th season of Music at Noon: The Logan Series. Cavani String Quartet will present its free Logan Series public performance at noon on Wednesday, Sept 19, in the McGarvey Commons of the college’s Reed Union Building.
Mercyhurst Men’s Basketball Alumni are organizing an Alumni Basketball game for charity. The event is scheduled for September 29, 2007 at 7pm at the MAC. Come See some of your favorite Mercyhurst players from the past and some of the Mercyhurst stars of the future compete in 3-point contests and a dunk contest. All proceeds from the gate will benefit the Alheimer’s Association of Erie.
There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Players include Brent Swain, Keith Nies, Matt Thielker, Gerry Battle, and Dion Brown, Jason Ioppolo, and Jody Crymes.
The 2007 Wine Country Harvest Festival will be held in North East, PA September 28, 29 and 30.

Have there been any developments with the Erie-Dover ferry? They were supposed to be starting trial runs this fall.

I'd heard on Taxpayer's Hotline last week (okay, not the most reliable source) that Gannon is the buyer of the GTE/Verizon building. Another piece of property off the tax roles. When will that end?
