State Senator Jane Earll of Erie said she would seek the Republican nomination for Superior Court. There is an opening due to Judge Michael Joyce being indicted on mail fraud charges and his deciding not to run for retention.
According to the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight, an independent entity within the Department of Housing and Urban Development, home prices in Erie County were up 1.64 percent for the second quarter of 2007. Their data also shows a one year increase of 4.18 percent and a five year increase of 19.63 percent. The data comes from sales AND refinances. Press release.
In the 12 months ending in June, according to the National Association of Realtors, the median home price for Erie County fell 2.3 percent to $99,900. The June 2006 figure was $102,300.
Furniture Row Companies of Denver, Colorado, which currently owns and operates 330 stores in 31 states, plans to open four jointly located home furnishing and bedding specialty stores in Erie, PA. To house the stores, the furniture retailer plans to build a one-level, 53,440 sq ft Furniture Row Shopping Center. Crews have erected the structural steel for the new Center located at 6037 Peach Street. Construction is anticipated to be completed by this winter. The Center will contain four specialty furniture stores in one convenient location. The stores brands include Oak Express, Bedroom Expressions, Sofa Mart and Denver Mattress Company. The Oak Express and Bedroom Expressions stores currently located at 5942 Peach Street will move into the Center when construction is complete.

The Altoona Curve came into town and swept a doubleheader against the Erie SeaWolves. Erie was shoutout twice 6-0 and 3-0. The season-ending series will continue with a second straight doubleheader on Saturday night. Game one will begin at 5:05 PM with RHP Luis Munoz (11-5, 3.82) starting for Altoona against RHP Jon Connolly (7-6, 4.37) for the SeaWolves. LHP Kyle Bloom (0-1, 1.50) will make a spot-start in game two for the Curve against RHP Randor Bierd (3-1, 2.74) for Erie.
Gareth Kolkenbeck Ruh’s header off a corner kick from Dan Howell (Erie, Pa/ Iroquois) with 11:21 remaining in regulation pushed Gannon past Indianapolis in men’s soccer action Friday evening at Gannon University Field. Howell gave Gannon an early 1-0 lead with his third goal of the season at the 20:49 mark. Gannon improved to 3-0.
Julie Devus’ first half free kick conversion held up as the host Gannon Lady Knights squeaked by the University of Indianapolis women’s soccer team 1-0.
Gannon head football coach Jim Kiernan has announced senior Rich Lee (Slippery Rock, Pa/ Prospect) and redshirt junior Matt Ward (Brockport, NY/ Brockport) as the program’s 2007 team captains. Gannon opens the Jim Kiernan era today at Hillsdale.
The Mercyhurst College football team (1-0) plays today at 14th ranked Northwood.

“Miss Saigon” is being performed at the Erie Playhouse this evening and Sunday as the run was extended.
The 11th annual Erie German Heritage Festival will be held at the Shriner Club, 38th and Zuck, September 1-2.
Family First Sports Park is hosting the Challenge Cup soccer tournament September 1-2. The National Premier High School Challenge Cup will feature some of the top high school boys and girls teams in the nation. Every hotel room within 50 miles of Erie is booked this weekend due to the holiday and this tournament.

The Roadhouse Theatre is going to turn back the clocks and rewind the years to the 1950’s. “Buddy Holly, The Day the Music Died” will be performed at the Roadhouse Theatre Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, September 7-22. The 7th annual triathlon on Presque Isle State Park will take place Saturday, September 8, 2007, the first Saturday after Labor Day. All segments of the triathlon…the swim, the bike and the run…will start, transition and finish at Beach 6. PI TRI 07 is open to individuals and 2-3 person relay teams.
The 9th annual Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park Festival of family fun and environmental learning will be held September 8, 10 am - 3 pm. From the children’s tree climb to horticulture presentations, there will be something for all to enjoy. Where economic freedom rings, political freedom is sure to follow, says an economist who will speak next month at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The Sam and Irene Black School of Business will host Robert Lawson PhD, co-author of the annual Economic Freedom of the World report, for a lecture and question and answer session on Monday, Sept 10. Lawson’s presentation will take place at 5 pm in the lecture hall of the Research and Economic Development Center (REDC). It is free and open to the public.

Indigenous Aztec dance and music is on the menu for the first performance in the 2007-08 Rhythms of Life cultural series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The famed Cavani String Quartet returns to Erie in September to open the 18th season of Music at Noon: The Logan Series. Cavani String Quartet will present its free Logan Series public performance at noon on Wednesday, Sept 19, in the McGarvey Commons of the college’s Reed Union Building.
Douglas Bruce, principal organist at St Franz Xaver Church in Munchenstein, Switzerland, will give an organ recital as part of the Smith Music Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Tuesday, Sept 25. Bruce’s performance, which begins at noon, is free and open to the public and will take place in the college’s Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel.

The Erie Art Museum’s Contemporary Music Series will present violinist Diane Monroe in concert on Friday, Sept. 28, 2007 at 8 pm at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State Street. Admission is free; a $10 donation is suggested.
Mercyhurst Men’s Basketball Alumni are organizing an Alumni Basketball game for charity. The event is scheduled for September 29, 2007 at 7pm at the MAC. Come See some of your favorite Mercyhurst players from the past and some of the Mercyhurst stars of the future compete in 3-point contests and a dunk contest. All proceeds from the gate will benefit the Alheimer’s Association of Erie. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Players include Brent Swain, Keith Nies, Matt Thielker, Gerry Battle, and Dion Brown, Jason Ioppolo, and Jody Crymes.
The 2007 Wine Country Harvest Festival will be held in North East, PA September 28, 29 and 30.
In conjunction with Alumni Reunion 2007, Penn State Behrend Finance graduates are invited back to campus for a Finance Alumni Reception hosted by Sam and Irene Black School of Business faculty. Greg Filbeck, the Finance program chair, and Finance faculty Brian Boscaljon, Jessica Zhou, and Kay Johnson have planned an informal reception for Finance alumni and their guests from 10:00 until 11:30 am on Saturday, September 29. The reception is part of the college’s Alumni Reunion and concurrent Parents & Families Weekend, and will be held in the cafe of the Research and Economic Development Center (REDC). Attendance reservations should be made by Saturday, September 15.
