Pennsylvania’s Republican party state committee choose Jacqueline Shogan of Westmoreland County to be added to the race for the state Superior Court. She is one of five Republican nominees for the three open seats on the court. State Sen Jane Earll of Erie was a candidate for the nomination but withdrew. The opening for the fifth nominee was due to Superior Court Judge Michael Joyce of Erie, under indictment by a federal grand jury on multiple counts of mail fraud and money laundering, deciding not to run for reelection.

The Akron Aeros beat the Erie SeaWolves 8-6 last night to win the Southern Division championship, three games to one.

The Gannon University women’s soccer team (4-1) extended its winning streak to four with a 1-0 nonconference victory over the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats (4-1, 2-2 WVIAC).
Freshman Jamie Schroter assisted on three goals as the Mercyhurst women’s soccer team defeated the Charleston Golden Eagles 4-0 on Saturday. Mercyhurst improves to 3-1-1 on the year.
The Allegheny College men’s soccer team fell to 2-2 on the young 2007 season after falling in the second game of the first annual Allegheny College Soccer Classic. The Gators dropped the game by a score of 2-1 to the Rochester Institute of Technology (3-1) on Saturday, September 8. Oberlin (3-0-1) defeated Washington and Jefferson (1-2) in the tournament opener.
The Penn State Behrend women’s volleyball program finished up its 2007 Behrend Invitational on Saturday, September 8. Behrend dominated Bethany College in three straight games (30-22, 30-23, 30-25), and handled a talented Fredonia team three games to one (30-24, 26-30, 30-26, 31-29). The blue and white finished runner’s-up in the tournament with a 3-1 mark.
Junior Jenna Matson tallied a season-high 23 kills and sophomore Julia Butler posted a season-high 57 assists to help the Lakers to a four-game victory over Tiffin and cap the Laker Invitational with a 4-0 record. With the victory, the Lakers improve to 12-1 on the season.
The Gannon University volleyball team (4-4) defeated both opponents at Saturday’s Point Park Tournament, hosted by Point Park Univesrity. The Lady Knights began the day with a match against Pitt-Johnstown. Gannon blanked the Mountain Cats 3-0 (30-25, 30-23, 30-22). The Lady Knights won a hard-fought match over the Point Park Pioneers in the late afternoon matinee. The Pioneers took the first two games 30-27 and 30-18, respectively, but Gannon mounted its comeback in the third frame. The Lady Knights took game three 30-18 and game four 30-27. Gannon came back from an 8-4 deficit to take the match 3-2 with a 15-13 win in the fifth.
Allegheny’s volleyball team (4-2) ran their weekend record to 4-0, earning a pair of 3-0 wins over Hartwick and Manhattanville at the Elmira College Tournament on Saturday, September 8 after earning 3-0 victories over Pitt-Bradford and Alfred on Friday.
On Saturday, Penn State Behrend tennis team hosted its eighth annual Behrend Invitational. Defeating Bethany and Chatham, the blue and white went on to face Geneva for tournament champion, where they went on to win 3-2, improving their record to 4-0 on the season.
The Mercyhurst women’s tennis team completed a tough trip to Michigan’s upper peninsula unbeaten, defeating Lake Superior State 8-1 Saturday. The win concludes a 2-0 weekend after a 5-4 win over Michigan Tech Friday.
Safety Andre Dawson (Erie, PA) had an interception for the second straight contest for Colgate. UMass beat Colgate 35-17.
University of New Hampshire Sophomore defensive lineman TJ Taylor (Erie Pa/ Fairview) had a fumble recovery in their 41-24 loss to James Madison University.
The 34th annual Erie Marathon at Presque Isle takes place Sunday September 9 at 7 am. The start/finish is in the Rotary Pavilion Area (approximately 3 miles from the entrance to the park) and the traditional two loop course will be run on Presque Isle State Park. This marathon is quite possibly the flattest course in the country. World records were recently set on this course in 2003 and 2005. Marathon organizers expect more than 900 runners and 200 volunteers from 38 states, Canada and Germany at this year’s race.
Where economic freedom rings, political freedom is sure to follow, says an economist who will speak next month at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The Sam and Irene Black School of Business will host Robert Lawson PhD, co-author of the annual Economic Freedom of the World report, for a lecture and question and answer session on Monday, Sept 10. Lawson’s presentation will take place at 5 pm in the lecture hall of the Research and Economic Development Center (REDC). It is free and open to the public.

Indigenous Aztec dance and music is on the menu for the first performance in the 2007-08 Rhythms of Life cultural series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac ensemble will perform between noon and 1:45 pm on Wednesday, Sept 12, in Bruno’s CafĂ©, located on the second floor of the college’s Reed Union Building. The performance is free and open to the public, and a full menu of hot and cold lunch items will be available for purchase.

The famed Cavani String Quartet returns to Erie in September to open the 18th season of Music at Noon: The Logan Series. Cavani String Quartet will present its free Logan Series public performance at noon on Wednesday, Sept 19, in the McGarvey Commons of the college’s Reed Union Building.
Douglas Bruce, principal organist at St Franz Xaver Church in Munchenstein, Switzerland, will give an organ recital as part of the Smith Music Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Tuesday, Sept 25. Bruce’s performance, which begins at noon, is free and open to the public and will take place in the college’s Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel.

The Erie Art Museum’s Contemporary Music Series will present violinist Diane Monroe in concert on Friday, Sept. 28, 2007 at 8 pm at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State Street. Admission is free; a $10 donation is suggested.
Mercyhurst Men’s Basketball Alumni are organizing an Alumni Basketball game for charity. The event is scheduled for September 29, 2007 at 7pm at the MAC. Come See some of your favorite Mercyhurst players from the past and some of the Mercyhurst stars of the future compete in 3-point contests and a dunk contest. All proceeds from the gate will benefit the Alheimer’s Association of Erie. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Players include Brent Swain, Keith Nies, Matt Thielker, Gerry Battle, and Dion Brown, Jason Ioppolo, and Jody Crymes.
The 2007 Wine Country Harvest Festival will be held in North East, PA September 28, 29 and 30.
In conjunction with Alumni Reunion 2007, Penn State Behrend Finance graduates are invited back to campus for a Finance Alumni Reception hosted by Sam and Irene Black School of Business faculty. Greg Filbeck, the Finance program chair, and Finance faculty Brian Boscaljon, Jessica Zhou, and Kay Johnson have planned an informal reception for Finance alumni and their guests from 10:00 until 11:30 am on Saturday, September 29. The reception is part of the college’s Alumni Reunion and concurrent Parents & Families Weekend, and will be held in the cafe of the Research and Economic Development Center (REDC). Attendance reservations should be made by Saturday, September 15.
