Light earthquakes hit off the Lake Erie shoreline in northeast Ohio early Friday. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit about 4:50 am two miles NNW of Conneaut, Ohio measured 2.7. An aftershock at 11:05 am measured 2.1 and was centered 2 miles N of Conneaut. Conneaut is 35 miles from Erie.
The Philly to Erie US Airways Thursday night flight was cancelled. One guy rented a car from Avis and drove to Erie. Because the airport isn’t open 24/7, the instructions were to “bang on the airport door until the police came and explain to them that I had to drop off my paperwork and car keys to the Avis desk.” Hey Avis, ever consider a drop off box? So much for trying harder.
MarkJL posted pics on RailroadfFrums.com of brand new GE Evolution locomotives waiting delivery on the CSX interchange track. A commenter pointed out that the radiator hoods seem to get larger with every model. Mark is owner of Hot Rail Productions which produces and sells train videos, CD-ROM’s, Screen Savers and a slew of other items.

The Erie Playhouse gets a standing ovation for their new web site which they just launched. What a dramatic difference. It’s now easy to navigate, the info is easy to find and it looks great. newline Creations of Erie did a great job on the site.
Two Gannon University faculty members will lead an air quality workshop for local high school science teachers as a result of a grant the university has received from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Environmental Education Grants Program. Weslene Tallmadge, PhD, associate professor and chair, Gannon University chemistry department, and Michelle Homan, PhD, associate professor, environmental science and engineering, will lead the workshop. It will be offered in June, 2008 to about 20 local high school science teachers. A collaborating partner in the workshop will be Gannon University’s Science in Motion project, an educational outreach program that provides to teachers greater access to state-of-the-art scientific resources. United States Steel Corporation announced the appointment of George H Thompson, Jr as general manager-commercial in U S Steel’s tubular products organization. Thompson graduated from Allegheny College in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
Brandon Buck and Luke Pither each scored once to lead the Guelph Storm to a narrow 2-1 win over the Erie Otters in an Ontario Hockey League game played tonight in front of 3,347 at the Sleeman Centre. Zack Torquato netted the lone Otters goal. The Otters dropped to 1-2 with the loss. The Otters home opener takes place today when the Sudbury Wolves visit for a 7:30 pm start at the Tullio Arena presented by Taco Bell and JET-TV. The first 3,000 fans into the game will receive a free Otters magnetic schedule and a free taco courtesy of Taco Bell. Tickets for the game are available at all Erie-area TicketMaster locations and the Erie Civic Center Box Office. Warm up for the home opener at the Otters Pre-Game Party being held from 5-7 pm on 8th Street (between French and Holland) featuring fun for the children, beverages, food and a free concert by the M-80’s.
Freshman forward Vicki Bendus (Wasaga Beach, Ontario/Aurora Panthers) scored two goals as the 2nd ranked Mercyhurst Lakers women’s hockey team came from behind to defeat the Vaughan Flames, 3-1, in an exhibition game at the Ice Center.
The Gannon men’s soccer team (8-1, 5-1) extended their home unbeaten streak to eight matches Friday night with a 2-0 shutout of Saginaw Valley State (4-6-1, 1-2-1) at Gannon University Field.
The Mercyhurst men’s soccer team lost a 6-4 thriller to Northwood on Friday. The Lakers sacrifice a key GLIAC win, dropping to 5-5-2 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Northwood Timberwolves earned their first GLIAC win, improving to 3-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the GLIAC.
The Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team (6-2-2 overall, 2-1-2) eked out a 1-0 victory over host Gannon University (7-3-1, 1-2-0) Friday.
The Gannon men’s water polo team remained perfect in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) action Friday night with a 12-1 trouncing of Salem International at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion.
The Penn State Behrend Lions women’s tennis team earned another win on Friday, dropping Penn State Altoona 9-0 on the Behrend Courts. With the victory, Coach Barger’s crew improves to a sharp 11-1, while Altoona falls to 2-4 on the season.
The Mercyhurst women’s volleyball team (14-5, 2-4 GLIAC) notched its second-straight conference victory Friday evening, downing Wayne State (5-9, 0-6 GLIAC) 3-0 at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
The Gannon University volleyball team (4-10, 0-6 GLIAC) hosted 15th ranked Hillsdale College Friday evening but was unable to take victory. GLIAC foe Hillsdale (15-4, 6-0 GLIAC) swept the Lady Knights 3-0 (30-23, 30-17, 30-27).
Junior Mashea Williams (Erie Mercyhurst Prep) was named a co-captain of the Penn State women’s basketball team. Williams worked her way into the starting line-up after proving to be one of the team’s top defensive weapons. She finished the season with 33 steals, including at least one theft in each of the last eight games of the year. Williams, the winner of the Tom Caldwell “Unsung Hero” award, accounted for 4.6 points and 2.4 rebounds per game a year ago.

The Wooden Nickel Buffalo Farm huge cornfield maze which they call “Corn Stalking USA” is now open and runs through the end of November. Hours are Friday through Monday 10am - 10pm. Last year, Mercyhurst College became home to a life-size specimen of a Tyrannosaurus Rex skull, thanks to the donation of a museum-quality natural history collection of casts and fossils. This year, Mercyhurst will go one better when it unveils a set of shark jaws so enormous that people can lock arms and walk through together. Mercyhurst College’s second annual natural history exhibit runs to Oct 17 at Cummings Gallery in the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. Because of the anticipated public appeal, normal gallery hours are being extended for the exhibit’s duration. They are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 2 to 7 pm, except Thursdays, 2 to 9 pm; also Sundays from 2 to 5 pm. Special tours for school students are available by contacting the Mercyhurst Archaeological Institute at 824-2545.
Thoroughly Modern Millie will be performed at the Erie Playhouse through October 7. Curtain times are Wed - Sat at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2 pm.
Mercyhurst Men’s Basketball Alumni are holding an Alumni Basketball game for charity today at 7pm at the MAC. Come See some of your favorite Mercyhurst players from the past and some of the Mercyhurst stars of the future compete in 3-point contests and a dunk contest. All proceeds from the gate will benefit the Alheimer’s Association of Erie. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Players include Brent Swain, Keith Nies, Matt Thielker, Gerry Battle, and Dion Brown, Jason Ioppolo, and Jody Crymes.
In conjunction with Alumni Reunion 2007, Penn State Behrend Finance graduates are invited back to campus for a Finance Alumni Reception hosted by Sam and Irene Black School of Business faculty. Greg Filbeck, the Finance program chair, and Finance faculty Brian Boscaljon, Jessica Zhou, and Kay Johnson have planned an informal reception for Finance alumni and their guests from 10:00 until 11:30 am on Saturday, September 29. The reception is part of the college’s Alumni Reunion and concurrent Parents and Families Weekend, and will be held in the cafe of the Research and Economic Development Center (REDC). Attendance reservations should be made by Saturday, September 15.
Alec Chien, professor of music and artist in residence at Allegheny College, will present a concert of Beethoven piano sonatas at 7 pm on Saturday, Sept 29 in the college’s Shafer Auditorium. The concert, the sixth in a seven-concert series in which Chien is performing all 32 of Beethoven’s piano sonatas, is FREE and open to the public.
The Erie City Mission Annual Banquet and Silent Auction will be held October 4 at the Ambassador Conference Center. Barbara Hurd will be the next author to read from her works in the Creative Writer’s Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. She will appear on campus on Thursday, Oct 4. Hurd’s reading will begin at 6 pm in the worship space of the Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel. The 19th annual Erie Zoo Boo runs 6-9 pm, October 12-30. Admission is $4.50 for adults (ages 12 and up), $3.50 for children 2-11, and children under 2 will be admitted free.
The Erie Art Museum will host a workshop on Chado: Japanese Tea Ceremony on Saturday, Oct 13, 2007 at 1 pm in the Erie Art Museum, 3rd Floor Gallery (enter at 423 State Street). The workshop will provide its participants with an opportunity to share a moment in friendship. Chado, the way of tea, is a way to explore the aesthetic system that informs the arts of Japan. As well as discovering Chado, the workshop will also investigate related cultural practices such as calligraphy, Zen meditation, and martial arts. The workshop is opened to both teens and adults. The 6th Annual Walk To Make A Great Park Better will take place on Sunday, October 14 at 1 pm at Presque Isle State Park. Romanian Gypsy melodies, punk frenzy, salty tangos, hard-rocking klezmer, haunting Balkan harmony, and hip-hop beats will be eaten and spit out by an eclectic ensemble of violin, resophonic guitar, bullhorn harmonica and bass when Luminescent Orchestrii appears at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Tuesday, Oct 16. Luminescent Orchestrii’s performance, part of the college’s Rhythms of Life cultural series, is free and open to the public. It begins at noon in Bruno’s Cafe, located on the second floor of the college’s Reed Union Building; a full menu of hot and cold lunch items will be available for purchase.
Gannon University’s Nash Library, 619 Sassafras Street, will host a book sale Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct 23-24. The sale will run from 10 am to 6 pm each day. Thousands of books will be available in categories like fiction, children’s, history, engineering, business, psychology, science, education, and medicine. On the first day, hardcover books, videos, and audiobooks will be $2.50, paperbacks $1, and pocket paperbacks 50 cents. On the second day, all items will be sold at half price. Patrons should enter through the library’s back door by the West Seventh Street parking lot. Cash sales only. All proceeds will benefit the library’s book budget.
The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) Student Scholarship Auction Committee has announced that the College will hold the 14th Annual Student Scholarship Fund Auction at the new Erie Bayfront Convention Center on Friday, November 16. 2007. Each year, the College conducts fund raisers only for the purpose of providing scholarships to their students. The fact that the door to the airport terminal is locked should be brought to the attention of Airport Security (Mr. Bagnoni?). The night security person is supposed to keep the doors unlocked. But it seems that locking them is easier than making rounds periodically through the night. Avis does have an after hours key box.
