Erie PA News and Events for Sunday September 30, 2007

Posted by Dennis on September 30, 2007
The 10th annual Run Around Erie takes place today at Presque Isle State Park. The run spawned one of my favorite “Only in Erie” stories. It use to go through the streets of the city. The run went down Ash St and then west. A few years ago during the race, the corner convenience store at 6th and Ash was was robbed. Because police were busy doing traffic control and had numerous streets blocked off for the race, it took them time to respond to the incident. The criminal got away with around $5,000 in cash and checks. He was never caught. Proceeds from the race benefit two excellent Erie organizations - the Erie County Drug and Alcohol Coalition, a grass roots community volunteer organiztion committed to eliminating substance abuse, and Gaudenzia Crossroads, an organization that helps people affected by chemical dependency, mental illness and related conditions through comprehensive treatment and prevention.

Guinness World Records certified the stone-skipping record of 51 skips of Russ Byars of Franklin, PA. The previous record was 40.
