Erie County Executive Mark DiVecchio’s 2008 preliminary budget calls for a .25 mill tax increase. The enormous amount of property taxes is a big reason why Erie can’t attract new businesses. DiVecchio must want people and existing businesses to move away. According to The Tax Foundation in their 2006 report on Property Taxes on Owner Occupied Housing by County, Erie County Pennsylvania has the 55th highest property taxes in the nation out of 783 counties (or parishes). The median tax bill was $1,945 with a median home value of $102,400 as taxpayers paid 1.9 percent in taxes on the value of their home. The median income for Erie County homeowners was $51,420 which puts property taxes as a percentage of income at 3.8 percent.

Owen McEndree, 11 months old, of Erie, Pa was mauled by the family Rottweiler and received over 200 stiches. The attack happened at a house his family owns in Austintown, OH.

Mercyhurst College officials have received notice that one of their students is suspected to have contracted meningococcal meningitis. Meningococcal meningitis is a serious disease that affects children and young adults. Meningococcal bacteria are spread only through close, prolonged contact with a person who is infected or who is a carrier. Close and/or intimate contact with an infected individual does call for preventative measures. People who have had intimate or close direct exposure to a person with meningococcal meningitis should receive prophylactic medication. The Division of Student Life has already notified those students whom we understand had close contact with the student, including off campus roommates. Press release.

To the person or persons that did the comprehensive Wikipedia entry on parks in and around Erie, stand up and take a bow. Great work.

A 16-year-old Erie County student from Corry has been crowned the 51st Pennsylvania Dairy Princess. Lyndsey Royek won the honor on Saturday at the conclusion of a three-day competition that included princesses from 32 counties. The contestants were judged on their public speaking skills, knowledge of the dairy industry, poise and personality. Each contestant prepared a speech and skit promoting milk and dairy products, and participated in a personal interview with a panel of four judges. Winners were chosen in three categories - speech, skit and scrapbook - and Royek was recognized as a skit winner for her portrayal of “Alberta Einstein,” who formulated the recipe for milk. She also received an honorable mention for her speech. A junior at Corry Area High School, Royek is the daughter of Walter and Lisa Royek of Corry. The Royeks milk 55 Holsteins and Guernseys, of which Lyndsey owns six, on their 250-acre farm. Lyndsey is a member of her school’s swimming and soccer teams, and is active in 4-H and the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein and Guernsey associations. Her other hobbies include dancing, reading and showing cows. An avid dairy promoter, she hopes to attend Penn State University to earn a degree in marketing and pursue a career in the field.

Should be: "...students who we understand had close contact..." etc.

The pronoun "who" is the subject of the independent clause "who...had close contact with the student...," not the object of the parenthetic clause "we understand," and should therefore be in the nominative, not objective case.

Joe - I only changed one word in their release. I added the word Mercyhurst. It was written by someone at Mercyhurst College. Perhaps you know my verbal score on the SAT's and that I went to a public school and guessed I wrote it. :)

Dennis - I didn't assume you wrote it. It was addressed to whoever wrote it.
