Erie PA News and Events for Wednesday October 3, 2007
The pissing contest between Erie Council Council and Erie County Sheriff Bob Merski appears to have been resolved when both sides sat down and discussed the matter. Council granted $116,000 to be used for overtime. Sheriff’s deputies don’t work a 9-5 job and council finally saw his point. And with the compromise Merski seems a lot more will to control overtime and council’s concerns about money. Erie Council Chairman Fiore Leone voted against the measure on principle and for the second time this week has shown that he really is looking out for the taxpayers and not playing politics as usual. Refreshing.
The Erie County seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 5.0 percent in August. The non-seasonally adjusted rate was 4.7 percent with the civilian labor force at 141,300 and 134,600 people employed. The July seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.7 percent with the non-seasonally adjusted rate at 4.8 percent. In August 2006, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.2 percent with the unadjusted rate at 4.9 percent. The non-adjusted civilian labor force has dropped 1,500 people year-over-year which is disturbing. People have either given up looking for work or have moved from the area. The complete Pennsylvania Civilian Labor Force data for Aug 2007.
An adopted child’s fairy tale. Watch the heartwarming story of Missi Meely and Laurie Thompson this Friday on “20/20” at 10 pm on WJET-TV. Missi Meely knew she was adopted. One of my favorite quotes of all time came from her adoptive parents Sandy and Doug, “You weren’t had, you were chosen.” She shared with her boss, Laurie Thompson, the details she knew about her birth parents. Laurie had put her baby up for adoption 25 years earlier. The two turned out to be Mother and Daughter. I shed a tear evertime I hear the story. It’s been covered locally and Peter Panepento had their story, Side by Side, published in the July issue of Reader’s Digest.
