The GAF bayfront property was listed for sale yesterday. It wasn’t in the system this morning but I’ll post the asking price when I see it. For those that think it should be a park or a couple of restaurants, unless you have a net worth in the Warren Buffett, forget it. The property is too valuable.
The Erie Area Convention and Visitors Bureau changed their name to Visit Erie. They want their budged increased. They didn’t say what it would be spent on. Maybe they need the money to pay for all the new logo shirts they gave to the staff and board. Or maybe they need it to buy the url visiteriepa.com which is owned by Cyberink, the Times Publishing Company owned web firm. They REALLY need a new web site to replace the circa 1995 junk they currently have.
The city received a $95,200 grant from the FEMA Fire Management Assistance Grant Program to purchase new firefighter gear - coats, pants, hats. Contrary to the funny joke going around (ALL Erie firefighters are Caucasian) the headgear won’t be pointy white hats.
GE reported their earnings this morning at 6:30 am. GE Infrastructure, which includes the Erie plant, saw sales and profits rise about 20 percent.
Throughout October, pharmacy students at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine will take part in several community service events in celebration of American Pharmacists Month. The American Pharmacists Association has developed Pharmacists Month to promote the expanding role of the pharmacist in the community. Pharmacists and pharmacy students nationally will highlight the pharmacists’ value to the health-care system and to acknowledge their role as medication experts. As part of their community outreach efforts, LECOM pharmacy students recently met with students at the Benjamin Wiley Center in Erie to talk about poison prevention and the role of a pharmacist with interactive discussions and displays. Pharmacy students also will be out in the community throughout the month, beginning with a health fair at Giant Eagle, 7200 Peach St, on Saturday, Oct 13, from 10 am to noon. The public is invited to attend.

John Armstrong scored twice and Jason Missiaen turned aside 37 shots as the Peterborough Petes shutout the Erie Otters 7-0 in an Ontario Hockey League game played at the Memorail Centre. The Otters return home Saturday night to face-off against the Windsor Spitfires in a 7:30 pm start at the Tullio Arena.
Allegheny College Director of Athletics and Recreation Betsy Mitchell has named assistant basketball coach Kate Costanzo as the Interim Head Basketball Coach. Costanzo replaces Jennifer Reimer, who resigned in September to take the head coaching position at Case Western Reserve.
“Buddy Holly: The day the music died” runs Saturday 8 pm and Sundays 2 pm through October 21 at the Roadhouse Theatre.
The Erie Art Museum opens Ancient Microworlds on Friday, Oct 12, 2007 in the Erie Art Museum’s Annex Gallery, 423 State Street. An opening reception is scheduled for the exhibition during Gallery Night Friday, Oct 19, from 7-10 pm. The exhibition runs through January 28, 2008. About the Exhibition - With microscope and camera, Giraud Foster and Norman Barker have captured through photography the delicate structures and surprising colors of plant and animal fossils, and the result is an arresting and beautiful meditation on life and death on planet Earth. The Erie Art Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm. Admission is free for members, free on Wednesdays, $4 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and students and $2 for children under 12.
The Belle Valley Volunteer Fire Department Valley Of The Ghouls - Haunted House will be held October 12-13, 18-20, 25-27 and 29. Admission is just $5. Ghouling begins at 7:30 and lasts until 11 pm.
The Erie Chamber Orchestra, in residence at Gannon University, continues their 30th Anniversary Season with Natasha Farny on the cello on October 12. The show is free and open to the public. The Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel is located at at 512 Peach Street. Show time is 7:30 pm.
A three day environmental conference at Mercyhurst College called Good People Gather will be held Oct 12-14. It is FREE and open to the public. The 19th annual Erie Zoo Boo runs 6-9 pm, October 12-30. Admission is $4.50 for adults (ages 12 and up), $3.50 for children 2-11, and children under 2 will be admitted free.
The Erie Art Museum will host a workshop on Chado: Japanese Tea Ceremony on Saturday, Oct 13, 2007 at 1 pm in the Erie Art Museum, 3rd Floor Gallery (enter at 423 State Street). The workshop will provide its participants with an opportunity to share a moment in friendship. Chado, the way of tea, is a way to explore the aesthetic system that informs the arts of Japan. As well as discovering Chado, the workshop will also investigate related cultural practices such as calligraphy, Zen meditation, and martial arts. The workshop is opened to both teens and adults. The cost is $20 for Museum members, and $25 for non-members. Teachers are awarded Act 48 credit. Deadline to register is Thursday, Oct 11, 1007. The Lake Erie Region Conservancy (LERC) will be holding a concert fundraiser on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the Mercyhurst D’Angelo Performing Arts Center featuring grammy-nominated jazz-funk group from Chicago, Liquid Soul. The 6th Annual Walk To Make A Great Park Better will take place on Sunday, October 14 at 1 pm at Presque Isle State Park. All those interested in participating in the 5K Walk will meet at the Rotary Pavilion across from Beach 7. Proceeds from the Walk To Make A Great Park Better support Presque Isle as well as provide scholarships to high school seniors who exemplify the community involvement demonstrated by David Hanlon - educator and inspirational community leader. All Walk participants who raise a minimum of $25 in pledges will receive an attractive Walk T-shirt. This beautiful fall Walk affords participants the opportunity to enjoy the diverse colors that Presque Isle affords visitors in October. All Walk participants are treated to a picnic at the Rotary Pavilion at the conclusion of the Walk. The Erie Maritime Museum and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission will dedicate a state historical marker in honor of scientist and explorer Paul Siple, a 1932 graduate of Allegheny College, at 2 pm on Sunday, Oct 14 at the museum. At 3 pm former polar explorer Richard Chappell will give a talk at the museum on Siple’s life and accomplishments. Chappell was a colleague of Siple’s. Siple, who died in 1968, was a native of Erie. At the age of 20, while still an undergraduate at Allegheny College, he was chosen to accompany Admiral Richard Byrd on one of his pioneering expeditions to the Antarctic. Siple was to make six Antarctic expeditions in all, including two Byrd expeditions. Both the Siple Coast and Siple Island in the Antarctic are named in his honor. A noted scientist, inventor, diplomat and author, Siple also developed, along with Charles Passel, the wind-chill index, the apparent temperature felt on exposed skin due to the combination of air temperature and wind speed.
Saint Vincent Health Center will conduct its annual flu vaccine clinic for the community on October 15-19. Vaccination will take place in the Rehabilitation Lobby of Saint Vincent, located off Sassafras Street, between 24th and 25th Streets. Those wishing to receive a flu vaccine can do so between the hours of 7:30 to 10 am and 3:30 to 6:30 pm. The flu vaccine is for those 18 and older. The cost is $30, and credit cards will be accepted. The shot is free of charge to those who have Medicare or Security Blue insurances. Participants are encouraged to bring their insurance cards to the clinic.
Romanian Gypsy melodies, punk frenzy, salty tangos, hard-rocking klezmer, haunting Balkan harmony, and hip-hop beats will be eaten and spit out by an eclectic ensemble of violin, resophonic guitar, bullhorn harmonica and bass when Luminescent Orchestrii appears at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Tuesday, Oct 16. Luminescent Orchestrii’s performance, part of the college’s Rhythms of Life cultural series, is free and open to the public. It begins at noon in Bruno’s Cafe, located on the second floor of the college’s Reed Union Building; a full menu of hot and cold lunch items will be available for purchase.

Gannon University will host its annual Alumni Homecoming and Reunion Weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Oct 19-21. Registration will begin at 7 am on Oct 19. Gannon University and Villa Maria College classes of 1957, 1967, 1982, and 1997 will celebrate landmark reunions. Gallery Night is an Evening of FREE admission to Erie area galleries. Exhibition opening receptions at the Erie Art Museum, Glass Growers Gallery, Urraro Gallery, Kada Gallery, Geary’s Studio 7 Gallery, Allen Stoneware Gallery, Kuhn’s Framing and Gift Gallery, Ralph Miller Jewelers and Gallery and ARTworks will be held on Friday, Oct 19, 2007 from 7-10 pm. EMTA will provide free Bayliner trolley transportation, courtesy of the galleries, from 7-10:30 pm. Service will be provided every 30-minutes and begins at Artworks, 14th and State Street. “The galleries are working together to coordinate our exhibition openings and promoting them as an evening of art. Each gallery will display works in various media, as well as offer interaction with gallery staff and sometimes, the artists themselves,” said John Vanco, director of the Erie Art Museum. Galleries will also offer incentives for patrons visiting as many galleries as they can in the evening. Gallery Night is organized by the Erie Art Museum.
Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host an Admissions Open House for prospective undergraduate students on Saturday, October 20. The annual fall open house is part of Penn State Days, a University wide initiative to celebrate the educational opportunities available at Penn State for all interested students - from current high school students and recent high school graduates to returning adults. Erie’s Day of Gaming will be held at the Travelodge off Exit 29, I-90 on October 20 in Erie, PA. Games include Eurostyle Board Games, Warmachine, Star Wars Miniatures, Check Your 6!, World War 2 aircraft miniatures, World War 2 Battlefield Evolution, Heroscape, Sky Galleons of Mars and Pirates. Entry fee is $4 for all day and is for covering the venue and advertising.
Gannon University’s Nash Library, 619 Sassafras Street, will host a book sale Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct 23-24. The sale will run from 10 am to 6 pm each day. Thousands of books will be available in categories like fiction, children’s, history, engineering, business, psychology, science, education, and medicine. On the first day, hardcover books, videos, and audiobooks will be $2.50, paperbacks $1, and pocket paperbacks 50 cents. On the second day, all items will be sold at half price. Patrons should enter through the library’s back door by the West Seventh Street parking lot. Cash sales only. All proceeds will benefit the library’s book budget.
Music from Antonio Rosetti, Alessandro Marcello, and Joseph Haydn fill the menu of a lunchtime performance by the celebrated Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. CPCO will appear at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, as part of Music at Noon: The Logan Series. Their performance will be held at noon on Wednesday, October 24, in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building; admission is free and open to the public.
The Venango Digital Film Association will be holding it first Film Festival November 2 and 3. The festival will feature films of all genres, but will focus on local filmmakers and films set within the region. Screenings will be held on November 2nd at the Barrow Civic Theatre in Franklin from 7pm until 9pm and on November 3rd at the Latonia in Oil City from 7pm until 9pm at a cost of five dollars for admittance. Workshops are also being held on Nov 3rd at the Latonia from 9am until 5pm, topics include: lighting, sound, editing, making family dvds and camcorders demystified. The cost is $10 each or $40 for all. Eligibility: Ages 14 to Adult (filmmakers under 18 must include letters of permission from a parent with their submissions) . Filmmaker must live in Western Pennsylvania, or the film must reflect a theme or subject of the region. Film Length and Format: 10 to 30 minutes. DVD submissions are preferred but VHS entries will also be accepted. We cannot accept entries on mini-DV tape, hard drives, 35mm film, or other formats. Entry Fee: $20 per submission, checks or money orders made payable to the Oil City Arts Council.
