Erie PA News and Events for Saturday October 13, 2007

Posted by Dennis on October 13, 2007

Emmanuel was not born in Erie. He was born in a small village in Cameroon, in West Africa. His parents were poor, hardworking and uneducated, in the school sense. For that reason they wanted to be sure their children were educated and educated well. They wanted more for their kids than working on a farm harvesting tobacco barely making enough to feed their families. So Emmanuel and his sisters were sent to school. Their parents would barter for their school fees. In Cameroon education is not free. They aren’t guaranteed an education through 12th grade like we are here. We take that for granted. When they weren’t in school they helped on the farm. Emmanuel cut weeds and crops not with anything powered by gas but by using a machete and whacking his way through. Emmanuel never saw a TV until he was in his late teens. His area in Cameroon is just now getting indoor plumbing. His was a very hard childhood where getting new shoes for Christmas was a great joy and they sometimes only had 50 cents a week for food for their whole family.
Some people might have used this kind of poverty as an excuse not to try and just say to hell with it and settle for the simple life of a poor farmer. Emmanuel used it as a REASON to grow and thrive. He finished high school with honors. He attended University of Yaounde for awhile then his older brother offered his home and help to him in Ogden, Utah to go to school at Weber State University. Of course this was something Emmanuel couldn’t turn down.
Emmanuel received a BS in Chemistry from Weber State and then went on the earn a PhD in Pharmacology from Loma Linda University. Dr Emmanuel Ngu is an Assistant Professor at The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM). Dr Ngu is the father of 3 girls and the husband of Tracy, a very proud wife who blogs about her family at The Ngu Family.
