Rev Theodore Jurewicz is assistant pastor at The Church of the Nativity of Christ is a Russian Orthodox (Old Rite). That’s the beautiful golden topped church on the bayfront. Rev Jurewicz is also a master iconographer, doing paintings of biblical scenes. He is currently working on the St Stephen Serbian Orthodox Church at 177 Weber Road in Lackawanna, NY. The work of Jurewicz is so prized, they waited a decade for him to begin work on the project. The cost to paint the formerly all white ceiling and upper walls of the church has an estimated cost of $170,000. The work is amazing. Slideshow with audio from the Buffalo News.
For those of you that are trying to recreate the John Kanzius salt water to fire experiment, use the13.56-MHz radio frequency. Due to Van der Waals force, this just may be producing electrolysis at an energy discount, allowing the process to actually produce a net energy gain WITHOUT breaking any thermodynamic laws. At the very least the Kanzius method may be a clean, economical way of producing hydrogen.
Aspen Dental is opening its first practice in Erie, 23rd in the state and 125th nationally. The new office is scheduled to open Thursday, October 25 at Millcreek Marketplace, 2049 Interchange Road. Aspen Dental will provide a full range of denture and dental services, including hygiene, oral surgery, fillings, teeth whitening, and crown and bridge. As part of its grand opening, Aspen Dental is offering free new patient exams and x-rays, and up to $600 off selected denture styles.
Eden has joined the Erie PA branch of Dunder Mifflin Infinity. The Erie branch is currently ranked 7th in the country. We expect Eden to move the Erie branch to the top and force “The Office” to relocate their fictional location from Scranton to Erie.

Ohio St is the new number 1 football team. Penn St hosts the Buckeyes on Sat, Oct 27. Ohio St is expected to dress 78 players for the game. Two other players can actually dress themselves. Go Penn St!
The Gannon men’s soccer team continues to make history during its fabulous 2007 run. The Golden Knights got revenge on the only Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) team to defeat them this season with a 2-0 shutout of Findlay Sunday afternoon at Gannon University Field. In the process, Gannon also clinched the GLIAC regular-season title and the right to host the inaugural GLIAC Final Four. The regular-season title marks Gannon’s first outright title since it joined the league in 1995. The Golden Knights shared the title with Mercyhurst twice, splitting the top spot in 1995 and 2003. The GLIAC semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, November 1.
The Mercyhurst men’s soccer team picked up another key GLIAC win with a 1-0 victory over Ashland on Sunday. With this win and the Lakers win over Findlay on Friday, Mercyhurst have a better opportunity at making the trip to the GLIAC championship final four in a few weeks. Mercyhurst moves up to 7-7-2 overall and 5-4-0 in the GLIAC.
The Gannon University women’s soccer team hosted Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe University of Findlay and dropped the match 1-0.
The Mercyhurst Lakers women’s soccer team pulled out a 3-2 win against the Ashland Eagles on Sunday. Junior Sarah Powell scored one goal and had one assist to led the Lakers with three points. Mercyhurst improves to 11-3-1 this season and 5-2-0 in the GLIAC.
The Mercyhurst golf team shot a 310 and came up four strokes short of defeating Gannon in the Mercyhurst Invitational Saturday. Gannon won the event with a 306 team score, while the Slippery Rock Club Team had a 337.
The 19th annual Erie Zoo Boo runs 6-9 pm, October 12-30. Admission is $4.50 for adults (ages 12 and up), $3.50 for children 2-11, and children under 2 will be admitted free.
The Wooden Nickel Buffalo Farm huge cornfield maze which they call “Corn Stalking USA” is now open and runs through the end of November. Hours are Friday through Monday 10am - 10pm. Cost is $8 with kids age 6-12 getting in for $6 and 5 and under entering for free. For details call (814) 734-2833.
Saint Vincent Health Center will conduct its annual flu vaccine clinic for the community on October 15-19. Vaccination will take place in the Rehabilitation Lobby of Saint Vincent, located off Sassafras Street, between 24th and 25th Streets. Those wishing to receive a flu vaccine can do so between the hours of 7:30 to 10 am and 3:30 to 6:30 pm. The flu vaccine is for those 18 and older. The cost is $30, and credit cards will be accepted. The shot is free of charge to those who have Medicare or Security Blue insurances. Participants are encouraged to bring their insurance cards to the clinic.
Romanian Gypsy melodies, punk frenzy, salty tangos, hard-rocking klezmer, haunting Balkan harmony, and hip-hop beats will be eaten and spit out by an eclectic ensemble of violin, resophonic guitar, bullhorn harmonica and bass when Luminescent Orchestrii appears at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Tuesday, Oct 16. Luminescent Orchestrii’s performance, part of the college’s Rhythms of Life cultural series, is free and open to the public. It begins at noon in Bruno’s Cafe, located on the second floor of the college’s Reed Union Building; a full menu of hot and cold lunch items will be available for purchase.
The Greater Erie Area Habitat For Humanity Monopoly Night 2007 will be held Thursday, October 18, at 6:30 pm at the Bel-Aire Hotel, 2800 West 8th St. Tickets are $25.

Gannon University will host its annual Alumni Homecoming and Reunion Weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Oct 19-21. Registration will begin at 7 am on Oct 19. Gallery Night is an Evening of FREE admission to Erie area galleries. Exhibition opening receptions at the Erie Art Museum, Glass Growers Gallery, Urraro Gallery, Kada Gallery, Geary’s Studio 7 Gallery, Allen Stoneware Gallery, Kuhn’s Framing and Gift Gallery, Ralph Miller Jewelers and Gallery and ARTworks will be held on Friday, Oct 19, 2007 from 7-10 pm. EMTA will provide free Bayliner trolley transportation, courtesy of the galleries, from 7-10:30 pm. Service will be provided every 30-minutes and begins at Artworks, 14th and State Street. “The galleries are working together to coordinate our exhibition openings and promoting them as an evening of art. Each gallery will display works in various media, as well as offer interaction with gallery staff and sometimes, the artists themselves,” said John Vanco, director of the Erie Art Museum. Galleries will also offer incentives for patrons visiting as many galleries as they can in the evening. Gallery Night is organized by the Erie Art Museum.
Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host an Admissions Open House for prospective undergraduate students on Saturday, October 20. The annual fall open house is part of Penn State Days, a University wide initiative to celebrate the educational opportunities available at Penn State for all interested students - from current high school students and recent high school graduates to returning adults. Erie’s Day of Gaming will be held at the Travelodge off Exit 29, I-90 on October 20 in Erie, PA. Games include Eurostyle Board Games, Warmachine, Star Wars Miniatures, Check Your 6!, World War 2 aircraft miniatures, World War 2 Battlefield Evolution, Heroscape, Sky Galleons of Mars and Pirates. Entry fee is $4 for all day and is for covering the venue and advertising.
Gannon University’s Nash Library, 619 Sassafras Street, will host a book sale Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct 23-24. The sale will run from 10 am to 6 pm each day. Thousands of books will be available in categories like fiction, children’s, history, engineering, business, psychology, science, education, and medicine. On the first day, hardcover books, videos, and audiobooks will be $2.50, paperbacks $1, and pocket paperbacks 50 cents. On the second day, all items will be sold at half price. Patrons should enter through the library’s back door by the West Seventh Street parking lot. Cash sales only. All proceeds will benefit the library’s book budget.
Music from Antonio Rosetti, Alessandro Marcello, and Joseph Haydn fill the menu of a lunchtime performance by the celebrated Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. CPCO will appear at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, as part of Music at Noon: The Logan Series. Their performance will be held at noon on Wednesday, October 24, in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building; admission is free and open to the public.
The Venango Digital Film Association will be holding it first Film Festival November 2 and 3. The festival will feature films of all genres, but will focus on local filmmakers and films set within the region. Screenings will be held on November 2nd at the Barrow Civic Theatre in Franklin from 7pm until 9pm and on November 3rd at the Latonia in Oil City from 7pm until 9pm at a cost of five dollars for admittance. Workshops are also being held on Nov 3rd at the Latonia from 9am until 5pm, topics include: lighting, sound, editing, making family dvds and camcorders demystified. The cost is $10 each or $40 for all. Eligibility: Ages 14 to Adult (filmmakers under 18 must include letters of permission from a parent with their submissions) . Filmmaker must live in Western Pennsylvania, or the film must reflect a theme or subject of the region. Film Length and Format: 10 to 30 minutes. DVD submissions are preferred but VHS entries will also be accepted. We cannot accept entries on mini-DV tape, hard drives, 35mm film, or other formats. Entry Fee: $20 per submission, checks or money orders made payable to the Oil City Arts Council. Gannon University on Sunday, Nov 4 will host its annual Fall Open House. Students and their parents can attend an optional mass at 11 am in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel, 512 Peach Street. Registration will begin at 11:30 am in the lobby of the Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street. Students can enter Scholarship Contests in eight academic disciplines: English, French, Spanish, German, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, and Education. Contest winners are eligible for annual scholarships up to $3,000 should they decide to enroll at Gannon. The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) Student Scholarship Auction Committee has announced that the College will hold the 14th Annual Student Scholarship Fund Auction at the new Erie Bayfront Convention Center on Friday Nov 16 with the purpose of providing scholarships to their students.
