Erie PA News and Events for Thursday October 18, 2007

Posted by Dennis on October 18, 2007

Union employees at the Erie County Office of Children and Youth voted to approve a new contract. The 4 year agreement gives them 5.2 to 7.2 annual pay raises. The union has continually said the office is short up to 18 caseworkers. Haven’t heard anyone from the county say anything about new hires and there are no positions listed on the county site.
(added note - someone PLEASE tell Ms Trohoske to do something with that hair.)

Erie City Council tabled a vote on a new LERTA (Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance) ordinance. The program has been slashed and they were talking about slashing it even further. Erie is already at severe disadvantage having some of the highest property tax rates in the nation. Population in the city is declining and cuts to the program is a long term mistake. Instead of a construction worker putting a nail into a new home or building, Erie City Council is hammering one more nail into the coffin of the City of Erie. Remember their actions on election day.

The announcement by the Great Lakes Independent Film Festival was postponed.

Presque Isle Downs and Casino is giving away 2 tickets to the ALCS game between the Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, October 18. You must be present to win. Game time for the ALCS game in Cleveland, Ohio is 8 pm.

Erie PA based Free To Choose Media announced “The Ultimate Resource” is scheduled to broadcast on PBS starting November 2, 2007 at 8 pm EST. The show documents how free market incentives have changed economies and lives over much of the world. In just the past 25 years, 400 million people have climbed out of poverty of living on less than $1 a day. The program features some of today’s most leading experts. In Bangladesh, they interview 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Muhammad Yunus. In Peru, they speak to economist Hernando de Soto. James Tooley, Professor of Education Policy, is featured in the segment on school choice. And scholar Johan Norberg meet them in Estonia to discuss the country’s huge leap in economic grown since the fall of the Soviet Union.

The play ‘A Piece of My Heart,’ based on the true stories of six women - four nurses, a Red Cross volunteer and an USO entertainer - confronts the audience with the truth these women lived and their struggle during the Vietnam war and after. One girl joins the army as a nurse to leave home: ‘I wasn’t into anything, I was out of Erie, Pennsylvania.’

The following communities have received state recycling grants: Corry City - $12,062; Edinboro - $6,562; Greenfield Township - $302; Wesleyville - $1,145 and Titusville - $4,593.

The Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority received a $300,000 state grant which can be used to purchase wheelchair-accessible transit vehicles (a bus or a van).

The Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership issued a report on staff activities for August and September. You can view it here (in crappy pdf format). Note to Amy - I beg you to put this into Word format (doc) where people can cut, copy, paste and there is no possibility of it containing a virus.

The Gannon men’s soccer team (13-2) held off a late rally by visiting Seton Hill and extended its home unbeaten streak to 12 matches Wednesday evening with a 2-1 victory at Gannon University Field. Dennis, you sure can copy text from a PDF and then paste into Word, the problem is that the formatting will not be retained. I don't post anything but PDF's or image files on the web. That way they stay structured the way I want them.
