Irene and John “Jack” Bryant went hiking on October 20 planning to spend the weekend in Pisgah National Forest in Western North Carolina. A 911 call was attempted from their cell phone October 21. The two had been married for over 55 years. Irene Bryant, 84, was found dead on November 9. Jack Bryant is still missing. Their bank card was taken and last used on Nov 9 just across the NC border in Tennessee. Their 3 sons Marc Bryant of Erie, Pa, Terry Bryant of Lawton, Ok, and Bob Bryant of Austin, Tx, are still searching for their father. Say a prayer for the family. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction. If you have any information on the case, please call your local authorities.

There are currently 2450 listings with the Greater Erie Board of Realtors - 1376 residential properties, 305 commercial/ industrial properties, 193 investment properties, 535 classified as vacant land and 41 business opportunities. There are a total of 336 pending sales. The number of listed residential properties has fallen by over 125 in the past couple of weeks, partly due to being a slower time of year but partly because of sales.

Eight players scored in double figures as the Gannon University men’s basketball team opened their season with a 126-50 rout over Penn State Greater Allegheny.

The Edinboro University men’s basketball team won its home and season opener Saturday, giving visiting Penn State New Kensington a 86-59 defeat. The Fighting Scots begin the season 1-0, dropping the Lions to 0-2.

The Behrend men’s basketball team started the year off with a win, rolling past Bridgewater College 56-46 in the opening game of the Behrend Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday in the Junker Center. Kevin Buczynski (Erie/Villa Maria) led all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting, and grabbed five boards. Baldwin-Wallace (1-0) defeated Fredonia 94-76 in the first game of the day, and will battle Behrend in the championship game set to begin at 3 pm.

The Allegheny men’s basketball team (2-0) captured the Hampton Inn Coaches vs Cancer Classic Championship after defeating Salisbury (1-1) 68-58 on Saturday, building on the squad’s 69-68 win over Bethany on Friday evening.

The Edinboro University women’s basketball team defeated Temple Baptist in a record breaking fashion, 118-17. The 101 point victory marks the largest margin of victory in school history. This breaks the record set by the 1976-77 team, when Edinboro defeat Gannon by a score of 120-22, a 98 point victory. The Fighting Scots open up the season perfect, with a 1-0 record. The lost drops Temple Baptist to 0-5 on the season.

The Gannon University women’s basketball team (1-1) beat Wheeling Jesuit University 68-42. Kim Vargas had 18 points and Allison Rothlisberger had 10 rebounds.

The Mercyhurst women’s basketball team (1-1) dropped its home opener 80-67 to Le Moyne on Saturday afternoon.

The Behrend women’s basketball team lost to John Carroll 77-64 in the consolation game of the Behrend Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday. Offensively Behrend was led by Kayla O’Connor (Erie/Seneca) with 16 points, while Meagan Bielanin (Erie/Mercyhurst Prep) chipped in 10 points and three steals.

The Gators used a near quadruple-double effort from junior Stephanie Wolf (Pittsburgh, Pa/North Allegheny), who finished the game with 11 points, 10 assists, nine rebounds and seven steals, while three other players scored double figure points in helping interim head coach Katie Costanzo to her first victory at the helm of the Allegheny program, a 69-47 win over the Pioneers of Marietta College.

Edinboro University cross country’s teams competed in the NCAA Division II National Championships in Joplin, MO. The men harriers finished 14th out of 24 teams, while the women finished 20th.

Picked 11th in the most recent coaches poll, the Allegheny College Gators bettered that mark by four places, and narrowly missed another en route to a seventh place finish at the NCAA Division III National Meet hosted by St Olaf College. The Gator men placed three runners, Ryan Place (Meshoppen, Pa/Elk Lake), Chris Corkins (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and Zac Ross (Meadville, Pa/Meadville Area) within three seconds of each other, placing 64th, 66th and 69th, respectively.

The young Allegheny College women’s cross country squad (four freshmen, and one sophomore, junior and senior) placed 32nd at the NCAA Division III National Meet hosted by St Olaf College. Leading the way for the squad was Mia Symoniak (East Snyder, NY/Amherst Central), who placed 142nd overall.

The Clarkson women’s hockey team broke a 1-1 tie by scoring twice in the final stanza to upend 2nd ranked Mercyhurst, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena. The Golden Knights, who received votes in the USCHO.com poll, improved to 10-2-2 overall, while the Lakers dropped to 8-2-2.

For the first time this season, both the Allegheny men’s and women’s swim teams can claim victory on the same day. The Gator women defeated SUNY-Fredonia 127-116 with the Allegheny men following suit to a 122-119 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Senior forward Simon Lambert’s third goal of the weekend, 3:11 into overtime, gave RIT a hard-fought 3-2 win over Mercyhurst in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday night at Frank Ritter Arena. The Tigers, 6-3 losers Friday, gained a split of the weekend set and improved to 4-5-0 overall and to 3-3-0 in the conference. The Lakers men’s hockey team left town with 2-9-1 and 2-3-1 marks respectively.

Ryan McDonough and Jack Combs each scored a goal and an assist to lead the Saginaw Spirit to a 3-1 win over the Erie Otters in an Ontario Hockey League game played Saturday night in front of 4,146 at the Tullio Arena. Erie lost for the 16th straight time and sixth straight on home ice to sink to 3-17-1-1 on the season.

Gannon head women’s basketball coach Cleve Wright announced the signing of Caitlyn Lowe (Gettysburg, Pa/Gettysburg Area) during the NCAA’s early signing period on Friday. Lowe has been Gettysburg High School’s leading scorer during each of the last two seasons. The 5’11” guard averaged 14.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.9 steals per game last season as a junior. She is a member of the National Honor Society and First Honor Roll with a 3.90 cumulative grade point average.

The Syracuse Crunch announced that the Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired defensemen Aaron Rome and Clay Wilson from Anaheim in exchange for center Geoff Platt. Platt was assigned to Portland and scored a goal in his first game with the team. He played for the Erie Otters 2003-05.

All An Act Productions presents “Run For Your Wife!” Performances will run Fridays, and Saturdays, Nov 2 thru Nov 24 at 7:30 pm. Sundays at 3 pm on Nov 11 and 25.

The Erie Civic Music Association concert on Sunday Nov 18 at 3 pm is a Big Band Salute to Hollywood with a 13 piece orchestra, vocal ensemble, dancers, and beautiful costumes. Music from Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, Henry Mancini, Andrew Lloyd Weber and others are featured in the tribute to the silver screen. Tickets are $22.

Michael Acri’s 23rd Annual Erie Boxing Classic will be held Wednesday, November 21 at The Avalon Hotel in downtown Erie. Former IBF lightweight champion Paul Spadafora (40-0-1, 16 KOs) is the headliner.

The Erie Central High School Class of 1997 Reunion is holding their 10 year reunion on Saturday, November 24 at the Cornerstone Bar and Grill, 809 East 38th St.


The Erie Broadway Series presents Annie at the Warner Theatre on Tues, Nov 27 at 7 pm.

The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Pharmacy has scheduled an On Campus Day on November 29, 3-5 pm, to provide opportunities for prospective students to tour the campus facilities and learn about the Doctor of Pharmacy Program. It includes a tour of the facility, a Pharmacy Compounding and Dispensing demonstration, an opportunity to meet with current students and faculty, an overview of the LECOM Doctor of Pharmacy programs and information on the admissions process and financial aid.

The next Edinboro Film Series get together will be held Thursday, November 29 at 8 pm at the Pogue Student Center (the building formerly known as the UC). They’ll discuss some possible events and guests for the upcoming Spring semester, and then watch “Wristcutters: A Love Story.”

European and African tradition meet in the annual holiday performance by the Penn State Behrend Concert Choir and Chamber Choir. The concert takes place at 8 pm Friday, Nov 30, in the college’s Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for Penn State Behrend students, faculty and staff. They can be purchased at the Reed Union Building information desk and at the door.

Celebrate the Christmas season by visiting Santa Claus himself at the Experience Erie Children’s Museum. Enjoy a picnic breakfast, singing, a puppet show, and time for the children to make gifts for their loved ones. Picnic Breakfast with Santa Giftmaking Workshop takes place Saturdays, 9-11 am, Dec 1, 8, 15 and 22. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is $8, $6 for members and free for kids under 2.

The Gannon University Social Work Club Christmas Dinner and Wellness Fair will be held in the university’s Hammermill Center, Peach Street and South Park Row, on Sunday, Dec 2. The event is FREE and open to the public. Doors will open at 10 am, and meals will be served starting at 11:15 am. Santa will arrive at 12:15 pm to meet with the children on hand and pass out gifts. The Dinner and Wellness Fair provide a full turkey dinner, Christmas presents, and clothing. In addition, representatives from local agencies and organizations will be on hand to provide attendees information on housing and human services as well as important health screenings. Last year organizers served nearly 800 meals. The university’s Student Government Association (SGA) helps fund the event. In addition, the dinner has been well supported by the local community. Gifts for Kids and Erie Insurance are among the event’s many contributors. Again, the event is FREE and open to the public. The Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy will hold their annual Recruitment Open House on Sunday, December 2, 1:00 to 3:30 pm. Over 500 eighth graders apply for approximately 225 freshman openings making admission harder than many colleges. Admission requirements include a minimum grade point average of 3.0, national standardized test scores at the 75th percentile or above, and two teacher recommendations.
