Erie PA News and Events for Sunday December 2, 2007

Posted by Dennis on December 2, 2007

Out of 360 metropolitan areas that the US Census Bureau tracks, only 62 metropolitan areas increased housing construction in 2007. Erie PA was 20th highest in the nation ranked by the percentage change in the January through October total units permitted, with an increase of 40.1 percent. The increase in Erie is attributed to developers building before the expiration of the LERTA (Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance) program that gave properties a 10 year tax exemption to city, school and county property taxes.
Here’s a run down on the overly complicated changes the mayor and council made to LERTA in November. Home additions will be given a 90 percent tax break for 5 years. Businesses will be given a 50 percent tax break for 10 years for new building plus 10-40 percent more depending on job creation. New residential construction in ‘targeted areas’ will receive a 90 percent break for 5 years, 70 percent in year 6, 50 percent in year 7, 33 percent in year 8, 25 percent in year 9 and 10 percent in year 10. Residences not in targeted area get a 75 percent tax cut for the first 5 years, 50 percent in year 6 and 25 percent in the 7th and final year.

At the Lakewood Ranch (FL) Christmas holiday celebration held Friday on Main Street, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine at Bradenton welcomed the arrival of Santa with the crowd favorite character “Dr Mittens.”

Sarah James is playing the Snow Queen in the Peoria Ballet production of The Nutcracker. James has a bachelor of arts degree in dance and a minor in arts administration from Mercyhurst College. She has danced with the Lake Erie Ballet and this past summer performed with the Chautauqua Ballet Company.

Saturday PIAA high school playoff football scores:
Class AAA: Erie Strong Vincent 54, Indian Valley 20
Class A: Kane 12, Erie Mercyhurst Prep 7

The 6th ranked Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team stretched its winning streak to three and remained unbeaten in College Hockey America (3-0-0) with a 6-1 win over the Purple Eagles Saturday afternoon at Dwyer Area. The Lakers improved to 11-2-2 overall.

The Gannon University men’s basketball team (5-0) beat Michigan Tech 75-65. Gannon looks well on their way to finishing over .500 after two straight losing seasons. They might not be back to their typical 20 wins, but they are much improved. Vince Mosley and Kyle Goldcamp have taken the scoring pressure off of Tyler Stoczynski.

With a 63-55 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Northern Michigan on Saturday, the Mercyhurst men’s basketball team evened its conference record at 1-1 and in the process earned the 500th win in program’s 37-year history.

A huge deficit at the free throw line was too much for the Edinboro men’s basketball team to overcome on Saturday, as the visiting Fighting Scots suffered a 78-73 overtime loss at Millersville. Edinboro suffered its first loss and is now 3-1, while the Marauders improve to 4-0.

The Behrend men’s basketball team dropped the Frostburg Bobcats 78-63 in the Junker Center to move to 3-0 at home. Behrend is now 1-1 in the conference and 4-1 overall.

The Edinboro women’s basketball team may be a tough group to figure. After blowing out a totally outmanned Temple Baptist team, the Fighting Scots fell by 37 points at West Liberty State earlier in the week. So all coach Stan Swank’s team does on Saturday is upset undefeated Millersville, 70-65.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team edged Gannon 76-65. Gannon shot 33 percent from the field. The absence of Carrie Nolan, who will miss the entire season with a knee injury, is clearly hurting the team.

The Mercyhurst College women’s basketball team matched Northern Michigan with 41 points in the second half, but the Lakers were unable to comeback from a 7-point halftime deficit in a 76-69 loss Saturday. The Lakers are currently on a five game slide since winning their season opener and are now 0-2 in the GLIAC.

The Penn State Behrend women’s basketball team beat the Frostburg Bobcats 63-46 for their second AMCC victory of the season. Meagan Bielanin (Erie Mercyhurst Prep) had 17 points and seven boards.

The Allegheny College women’s basketball team picked up their biggest victory of the 2007-08 season, topping Shenandoah by an 87-54 final score. The Gators, who led by ten at halftime, outscored their opponent 50-27 in the second half en route to the blowout win.

Senior forward Kerry Bowman helped Rick Gotkin record his 350th career win with a pair of goals as Mercyhurst snapped a four-game winless streak with a 5-2 conference win over visiting Canisius Saturday night. The Lakers improved to 3-11-2 overall and to 3-5-2 in the topsy-turvy Atlantic Hockey Association.

The Edinboro University wrestling team finished in seventh place out of 50 teams at the 26th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The Fighting Scots had four wrestlers place in the event which was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Mercyhurst College won the Ashland Invitational wrestling meet. The Gannon University wrestling team finished in a tie for 3rd place in the 9 team field.

Both Ashland teams claimed titles at the 2007 Ashland Invitational Swimming and Diving meet. The Ashland women finished the three-day event with 752 points. Edinboro (497) was second and Gannon (409) was third. The Ashland men collected 712 points, followed by Gannon (474) and Edinboro (397).

Nick Palmieri scored two goals including the winner in a shootout as the Erie Otters shaded the Guelph Storm 5-4 in an Ontario Hockey League game played last night in front of 3,154 at the Tullio Arena. Zack Torquato and Justin Hodgman each collected a goal and an assist for the Otters while Sean Jones also scored. Ryan O’Reilly also scored in the shootout as insurance. Jaroslav Janus stopped both Storm attempts. The win snapped an Erie four-game winless streak and upped their season record to 5-20-2-1.

Cory Chaffee (Erie Villa Maria) chipped in with 13 as the Thiel College men’s basketball team got the 2007-08 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) season started with a bang on Saturday as they cruised to an 86-59 victory over Waynesburg University at Beeghly Gymnasium.

Sean Smiley (Erie McDowell) had 14 points to lead Buffalo (5-3) to a 81-60 victory over the Evansville Aces.
