Jack at Erie Media-Go-Round reported that WJET-TV meteorologist Brian Neudorff is going to WROC Channel 8 in Crabchester, NY. Erie loses a good meteorologist and an even better person. The entire classy Neudorff family will be missed.
For the week of Dec 3-9, Presque Isle Downs and Casino reported wagers of $24,504,176 and payouts of $22,283,625.
Heatron announced their selection to Cree’s Solutions Provider program. This program is the fusion of a full-range of value-added companies to address the wide spectrum of LED lighting product needs. In alignment with Heatron’s design and manufacturing focuses, this network of companies have banded together to offer customers the design and manufacturing capabilities to greatly reduce project cost and time to bring these new products to market. Heatron’s LED Design Center and manufacturing facilities exemplify the overall direction for Cree’s Solutions Provider program. The LED Design Center, based in Chicago, is housed by a staff of Electrical, Optical, Mechanical and Industrial engineers. This skilled staff, coupled with manufacturing facilities in Erie, PA and Leavenworth, KS, provides Heatron with the capabilities to provide customers with a range services from LED design consultation to complete assembly, and all steps between.
A number of Erie companies were awarded Pennsylvania Small Business Advantage Grants. The recipients are: JAC Bell’s, $7,500 for upgraded lighting and new fixtures to conserve energy; Bello’s Shurefine, $4,300 for upgraded lighting and new fixtures to conserve energy; Belmart, $900 for upgraded lighting and new fixtures to conserve energy; Bridal Elegance, $4,650 for upgraded lighting and new fixtures to conserve energy; New York Lunch, $2,420 for restaurant equipment upgrade to conserve energy; Brugger Funeral Home, $7,500 for high efficiency HVAC equipment to reduce energy costs; Lorie’s Wildwood Restaurant, $7,500 for upgraded lighting, kitchen equipment, and heat recovery equipment to conserve energy; Automation Devices, $7,500 for high efficiency milling and lathe machines to conserve energy; and Chido’s Drycleaners, $7,500 for a high-efficiency dry cleaning machine to conserve energy and prevent pollution.
The Spirit Drum and Bugle Corps named Mark Riel as Assistant Director for Logisitcal Operations. Riel is a native of Erie, Pennsylvania. He received both his Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Science in Music Education degrees from Slippery Rock. He is currently Director of Bands at North Brunswick High School in Leland, NC. Mark most recently served as tour director for Drum Corps International’s Boston Crusaders.
Goodrich Corporation has appointed Mike McAuley as Vice President and Treasurer. McAuley holds a BS in Economics from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA and a MS in Management from Purdue.
The Allegheny College Gators dropped a non-conference contest on Tuesday evening to the Tomcats of Thiel College by a 59-55 margin despite three players in double figure scoring. Cory Chaffee (Erie Villa Maria) had 4 points and 3 rebounds for Thiel.
For the second consecutive season, Inside Lacrosse Magazine has picked the Mercyhurst College men’s lacrosse team as the preseason favorite to win the East Coast Conference Championship. As well, the magazine named David Osier, Matt Spahr and Jason Lashomb to the preseason all-conference team. A year ago, the Lakers went 13-2, rolled to a 6-0 mark in the ECC, and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship game, losing to Le Moyne 6-5. The Mercyhurst men’s lacrosse team opens the season Feb 24 at Queens (NC).
Edinboro University Women’s Basketball Coach Stan Swank announced the signing of Micki Cerchiaro. Cerchiaro, a 5’11” forward/guard (Pittsburgh, PA/Our Lady of Sacred Heart), is a senior at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and a standout in basketball, volleyball and softball for the Chargers. Cerchiaro averaged 14.2 points per game, 9.5 rebounds per game and 3.5 steals per game in her junior season.

The War at the Shore quad-dual wrestling tournament tickets are now on sale at local schools. The event includes two high school matches that pit McDowell and Cathedral Prep with Fort LeBoeuf taking on North East. Opposite of the Division II match with 13th ranked Mercyhurst vs 20th ranked Gannon, is Division I action with 15th ranked Edinboro taking on Eastern Michigan. The 3rd annual War at the Shore will be held at the Erie Civic Center Tullio Arena on Friday, Dec 14.
The Lake Erie Ballet 49th annual production of the Nutcracker will be held Sat Dec 15 at 7 pm and Sun Dec 16 at 2:30 pm. Purchase tickets at the Erie Civic Center box office or at Ticketmaster.
There will be a Benefit Dinner and Concert at Luther Memorial on Sat, Dec 15 at 5:30 pm for 3 year old Jack Sundberg. Jack has an inoperable brain tumor.
