Erie PA News and Events for Sunday December 16, 2007

State Correctional Institution at Albion superintendent Marilyn S Brooks was finally relieved of her duties Friday. Raymond Sobina, former superintendent at SCI-Forest, has been named acting superintendent of the medium security prison that houses 2,331 inmates. The announcement came from SCI-Albion spokesman Bob McCarthy. Past announcements has come from prison PIO (Public Information Officer) Melinda Adams.
Malcolm Kysor of Erie escaped from the State Correctional Institution at Albion on the afternoon of Sunday Nov 25 by hiding in a garbage can that left the prison grounds around 3 pm. It took until 4:30 pm for the prison to notice he was missing. THe prison then did head counts and name checks. It took hours for prison officials to sound the alarm about the escape. Kysor was serving a life sentence for murder.


Marine Corps Reserve Erie Toys for Tots
The Marine Corps Reserve Erie Toys for Tots program is still seeking donation of toys. New toys can be dropped off at the Armed Forces Reserve Center, 3938 Old French Rd in Erie.


Hard as Nails Ministry
Erie PA native Justin Fatica will be on ABC’s Nightline on Monday Dec 17 at 11:30 pm just after the fascinating documentary about Fatica called “Hard as Nails” airs on HBO. Justin is executive director of Hard as Nails Ministry. Fatica will also be in the Dec 24 issue of Newsweek magazine, available online now, in the article “For the Love of Christ”.

Erie PA native Timothy Swift has one of the lead roles in the Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance production of “A Tuna Christmas” playing at the McChesney Scott Dunn Auditorium.

The 5th ranked Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team scored four goals on 11 shots in the first period and never looked back as the Lakers defeated the 8th ranked Dartmouth Big Green, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at Dartmouth. Mercyhurst improved to 14-3-2 overall while Dartmouth dropped to 9-3-1. Superstar Sophomore forward Meghan Agosta had two goals and an assist. The teams will conclude the weekend series Sunday afternoon at 1 pm.

Nick Palmieri scored with 30 seconds left in regulation time to lift the Erie Otters to a narrow 4-3 win over the Kingston Frontenacs in an Ontario Hockey League game played tonight in front of 3,389 at the Tullio Arena. Zack Torquato, Sean Jones and David Shields (with the first of his career) also scored for the Otters while Ryan O’Reilly collected two assists. Torquato also collected an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to 11 games (8-8-17). Erie posted their fourth straight home win to improve to 8-22-2-1 on the season.

The Mercyhurst men’s hockey team (5-11-2 overall, 5-5-2 AHA) scored two goals in the final 40 minutes to subdue visiting American International (4-11-2, 4-9-1) Saturday evening at the MIC. The win was the Lakers’ third straight.

The Mercyhurst Lakers women’s basketball team struggled from the field, shooting 24 percent in the first half and missing all eight of its three point attempts in a 75-49 loss to Tiffin Saturday. The Lakers fall to 2-8, while the Tiffin Dragons move to 4-7 this season.

On Saturday, the Behrend Lions women’s basketball team hosted the Fredonia State Blue Devils in a non-conference game. Behrend entered the game having won five of its past six contests, but was handled by FSU, 69-46 in the Junker Center.

Get the family together and take them to the Erie Playhouse for the heartwarming holiday musical “It’s a Wonderful Life”, through December 16. The lights will shine bright at the Erie Playhouse throughout the holiday season with the mounting of this classical seasonal tale. This new musical is a faithful adaptation of the 1946 film, which has entered into our national mythology, and has become as much a part of the Christmas holiday as the evergreen tree and fruitcake.

The Lake Erie Ballet 49th annual production of the Nutcracker will be held Sun Dec 16 at 2:30 pm. Purchase tickets at the Erie Civic Center box office or at Ticketmaster.

The Mercyhurst College Concert Choir and Carpe Diem Chorale will present their annual holiday concert on Sunday, Dec 16, at 2 pm in the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center on the Mercyhurst campus. The program is free and open to the public as a Christmas gift to the community. The Concert Choir and String Orchestra, directed by Rebecca Ryan, will perform Vivaldi’s “Gloria.”

The 25th annual McDonald’s High School Basketball Classic will be held in Erie PA on Friday, January 18 and Saturday January 18, 2008 at the Gannon University Hammermill Center. St Edward of Lakewood Ohio, Rice High School of NYC, Saint Patrick of Elizabeth NJ and Erie Cathedral Prep are in the powerful field. Adult General Admission tickets are $7 and Student General Admission are tickets are $5. Reserved tickets are $12.50.


The Association of Program Members (APM) of General Electric Transportation in Erie PA announced that it will be sponsoring the 13th Annual Winter Wishes Benefit Gala for the Foundation of Western Pennsylvania on February 16, 2008. Each year, the members of APM reach out to the community to collect donations for the silent auctions, live auctions and raffles that are held at the event. They also solicit “table sponsors” from local businesses. As a table sponsor, the business’ name appears on the centerpiece showing their support for this wonderful event as well as in any promotional materials that they put together for the function. The money raised with the auctioned items donated by local businesses will help provide funding for Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Community support of this event is recognition of the importance of this cause are greatly appreciated.
