Erie PA News and Events for Sunday January 6, 2008
Why is it the temperature is in the 50’s in Erie, PA in the middle of Winter? Global warming? No. El Nino? No. Hot air from city council? No. It’s the Latimer Effect. That’s the weather phenomenon named in honor of Craig Latimer of Erie. Simply all that occurs is that Craig Latimer schedules the Highmark QUAD Games Cross Country Ski race and the temps are more appropriate for water skiing than cross country skiing. If Mr Latimer scheduled a race every weekend from December through February, our area would never see snow.
The 25th annual Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Quad Games 5-mile Cross-Country Ski Race or 2.5-mile Snowshoe originally scheduled to take place Jan 6, 2008, at 1 pm at the Peek n’ Peak Upper Golf Course, in Clymer, NY has been postponed until Jan 13.

The Erie Ironworks Union (International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers Local 348) had a number of competitions at their annual picnic. Being Ironworkers they needed manly games. Union member Dann Carr, a two-time world and five-time national arm-wrestling champion, came up with the contests. Then in 1983, Carr asked his friend Johnny Ferraro to help him run a charity version of the games at Tech Memorial. The place was packed and the duo took the idea to Hollywood.
The biggest promotion in the 40 year history of the Community Blood Bank started on July 16th 2007 and ended on December 31st 2007 and the winner has been selected. Drawn to Life is an event that teamed the CBB with celebrity sports artist Kevin-John Jobczynski. Kevin-John will create a custom 30 X 40 graphite work of art for the winner. The winner chosen at random donated blood at 10:04am on Friday December 14th at a blood drive at Erie Insurance. His name is Chris Battista. Chris actually entered the contest 3 times by donating in August, October and December. He donated a total of 5 times in 2007. By contrast the average donor donated about 1.8 times in 2007.
This amazing work of art is valued at $20,000. Mr Battista will be able select the subject matter; a family portrait, the house, the car, the dog, whatever he’d like Kevin-John to create. Creating the work of art will take several months. “We are so excited for Chris. The Drawn to Life promotion is truly unique.” said Dan Desrochers, Director of Marketing at the Community Blood Bank. “Chris didn’t give blood to win this contest. He, like all our donors, gives blood to help save lives. We are so grateful that Kevin-John gave to us so generously. This promotion was a huge success for us, having a positive event to talk about for half of 2007 really helped us encourage people to come in and give blood.”

I stumbled onto a poem by Erie native Bonnie Rivas Johnson called Ein Bahn Strasse. In the poem, she thought of Erie while walking visiting Wiesbaden.
