Erie PA News and Events for Sunday January 13, 2008
Erie’s public indecency ordinance prohibits nude dancing. Maybe you remember City of Erie v Pap’s A M (“Kandyland”) a few years ago that went all the way to the US Supreme Court on a First Amendment appeal. Perhaps they should have had the girls do the Fan Dance. Faith Bacon of Erie, PA was the first to bring Far East dance to the American stage. The Fan Dance was popular in 1930’s.
How it came about was something a modern day lawyer would call a brilliant work-around. Pressure was put on burlesque shows and strip clubs to stop nude dancing so they stopped ‘nude dancing.’ Faith Bacon is credited with the idea of being covered when she danced and uncovered when she stopped. She danced around covered by fans made of ostrich feathers. When the music stopped, she stood still and uncovered.
Bacon’s career wasn’t very successful. In1956 after visiting her parents in Erie, she returned to the city where she spent most of her adult life, Chicago. She couldn’t find work and took her life. Here only possessions were “Miscellaneous clothing, one white metal ring, train ticket to Erie, Pa, and 85 cents.”
Her father was Frank Page Bacon, Jr. I’m guessing her mother had an Erie connection since the Bacon family are all from California. Her great-grandfather was the late Henry D Bacon founder of the old Page, Bacon and Company Bank of San Francisco and St Louis.

SafeNet is looking for the best Chili in town. SafeNet’s Second annual Chill-E Cook-off will be held at the Brewerie at Union Station on February 24. They still have tables available to promote your chili to the greater Erie community to show them who really does make the best chili! Judges this year will include State Representative Honorable Pat Harkins, Erie Times News Food critic Tim Hahn, and one other judge to be announced. They also have a commitment from local artist Kevin John Jobczynski to donate some great pieces to be auctioned off.
SafeNet is not a homeless shelter, but a safe and confidential place specifically for men, women and children who are victims of domestic violence. In the last four years, the SafeNet shelter has been crowded to the point that every available bed is utilized nearly every night. Thirty years of wear and tear have taken a harsh toll on the physical surroundings that victims of Domestic Violence encounter when they come into shelter. They are looking for help within the restaurant community to make some very needed changes to shelter. Make your reservations now by calling Kathy Clinger-Smith at (814) 455-1774, extension 249.

Mansfield came into Saturday’s contest at Edinboro averaging a PSAC-leading 84.6 ppg. But the sheriff was in town patrolling the paint, and he got his message across loud and clear. Ryan McLemore, known to his teammates as The Sheriff, led the Fighting Scots to a 91-67 win over the PSAC East-leading Mountaineers in a game that wasn’t nearly as close as the final score. The victory was Edinboro’s third straight and moved the Fighting Scots to 9-4 on the season.
The Penn State Behrend men’s basketball team rolled to its third straight win with a 77-61 victory over visiting Penn State Altoona on Saturday in the Junker Center. Behrend has now won 14 of 15 against Altoona, and improves its season mark to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the AMCC.

The Gannon women’s basketball team (11-4, 5-1) performed the magic trick yet again. The Lady Knights shook off a slow start and captured an unbelievable 75-74 victory over Ashland Saturday afternoon with a late rally at the Hammermill Center. Ashland’s largest lead of the first half came at 30-18.
In a see-saw battle with 20 lead changes and 15 ties, the Mercyhurst women’s basketball team pulled out an 81-78 victory over Findlay Saturday to earn their first GLIAC victory. Four Lakers finished in double figures with Stephanie Prischak leading the way with 23 points, tying her career high.
Jen Boykin had played in just one of the last five games entering Saturday’s PSAC crossover game against Mansfield. The senior guard did not score against the Mountaineers, but her play woke up a sluggish team and led the Fighting Scots to a 69-57 win. The victory boosted Edinboro’s record to 8-4.
The Behrend Lions women’s basketball team picked up a key AMCC win over conference foe Penn State Altoona 60-50 in the Junker Center. Behrend has now won six of eight games and sits at 6-6 overall and 4-1 in the league.
The Allegheny women’s basketball team (5-9, 2-3 NCAC) was unable to make it two in a row in conference play on Saturday, as the Gators fell 77-52 to visiting Ohio Wesleyan (9-5, 4-2 NCAC). Emilie Simone (Pittsburgh, Pa/Mt Lebanon) and Jill Gregory (Jeanette, Pa/Greensburg Central Catholic) led the Gators with 11 points each.

The 16th ranked Mercyhurst wrestlers faced a tough slate on the first day of competition at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals.
