Just because the posted speed limit is 65 mph, doesn’t mean you HAVE to go 65, especially when it’s snowing and the wind is howling. I-90 was shut down for hours between Harborcreek and Wesleyville due to accidents. As soon as that was reopened around 3 pm, I-79 was closed between McKean and Edinboro. It took until about 6 pm before traffic was allowed to go through. It was about even with actual crashes and vehicles sliding off the road as there were about 18 incidents.
Erie County is looking for a webmaster for ErieCountyGov.org. The position pays $29,426 a year. Applications must be in by February 1. Here’s the job posting.
The former Fergies Restaurant at 26th and Washington was sold for $200,000. The restaurant closed after Gary ‘Fergie’ Kaiser passed away.
The US Coast Guard seeks applications for membership in the Area Maritime Security Committee (AMSC) Eastern Great Lakes, Northwestern Pennsylvania Region regional subcommittee. The AMSC assists the USCG Captain of the Port Buffalo in developing, reviewing and updating the Area Maritime Security Plan. Applications should be submitted by February 7, 2008. Meteorologist Larry Mowry has joined the CBS 11/ TXA 21 Storm Team in Dallas / Ft Worth from CBS affiliate WKMG-TV in Orlando. Mowry once worked at WICU in Erie.

Rice High School (14-2) of NYC beat Saint Patrick (13-2) of Elizabeth NJ 60-57 to win the 25th annual McDonald’s High School Basketball Classic held at the Gannon University Hammermill Center. Cleveland St Edward beat host Erie Cathedral Prep 60-52 in the consolation game.
Saturday’s men’s basketball game between 2nd ranked Grand Valley State (20-0) and 13th-ranked Gannon (15-2) was billed as NCAA Division II’s marquee game of the day. It didn’t disappoint. Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Preseason Player of the Year Callistus Eziukwu recorded 23 points, 11 rebounds, and seven blocks as Grand Valley State held off Gannon 64-58 in front of 1,956 fans at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The game featured three ties and four lead changes. Gannon was hanpered by the loss of Tyler Stoczynski three minutes into the game. Stoczynski split his hand open between the middle and ring fingers on the rim grabbing a rebound. He left the arena to get it taken care of. His parents attend most games and I’m sure they spent the afternoon at a hospital.
The Mercyhurst men’s basketball team led homestanding Ferris State by 12 at halftime, but the Bulldogs scored the first 16 points of the second period and the Lakers couldn’t recover, falling 63-58 Saturday afternoon. After hitting 12-of-27 field goals and four 3-pointers in the first half, Mercyhurst (8-10, 2-6 GLIAC) went ice cold to start the second, missing its first seven attempts.
Grand Valley State scored 23 consecutive points while holding Gannon without a point for 11 minutes and four seconds in the second half Saturday afternoon as the home-standing Lakers posted a defensive 60-47 victory in women’s basketball action.
Ferris State outscored Mercyhurst 17-4 over the final 5:04 in Saturday’s GLIAC women’s basketball game to defeat the Lakers 81-70. The Bulldogs helped their cause by grabbing 26 offensive rebounds.
Sophomore forward Meghan Agosta registered the third four-goal game of her career as Mercyhurst defeated stubborn Brown 4-2 Saturday night. No 6 Mercyhurst improved to 17-5-2.
Connecticut junior forward Chris Myhro’s second goal of the game, with just over seven minutes to play, proved decisive as Connecticut edged Mercyhurst 3-2 Saturday. The Huskies improved to 7-13-2 overall and to 6-8-2 in the tightly-bunched Atlantic Hockey Association. The Lakers, who tied UConn 3-3 in overtime Friday, dropped to 7-14-3 and 7-6-3 respectively.
The 13th ranked Gannon University wrestling team faced tough competition on the road Saturday evening, as they fell 34-3 to No 5 Pitt-Johnstown in dual action.

There will be an Open Musician Audition for ‘Hank Williams - Lost Highway’ on Sunday, Jan 20 at 2 pm and Monday, Jan 21 at 7:00 pm at the Meadville Community Theater, 400 N Main St, Meadville, PA. Cast Needed: Hank Williams - age 20’s to 30’s, be able to sing and play guitar, and The Band - 4 band members, any age. Three new exhibits with the theme of art and technology will be presented in Bowman, Penelec and Megahan Galleries at Allegheny College Tuesday, Jan 22 through Wednesday, March 5. The exhibits include one-person exhibits by Carlos Rosas and Doug Loewen and the group exhibit “Big Food Pictures.” In conjunction with the opening, on Tuesday, Jan 22 at 7 pm in the lecture room adjoining the Art Galleries, Carlos Rosas, associate professor of art at Pennsylvania State University’s main campus, will present a lecture, illustrated with slides, discussing projects in which he has integrated art and technology in a variety of ways. A reception will follow. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12:30-5 pm; Saturday, 1:30-5 pm; and Sunday, 2-4 pm. All events are FREE and open to the public. Daniel S Mead, president of Verizon Services Corp, will discuss how creation of a centralized business services unit saved the telecommunications giant $562 million in one year during an upcoming presentation for the Sam and Irene Black School of Business at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Mead, a Warren native and member of the college’s Council of Fellows, will speak at 6 pm on Tuesday, January 22, in the Samuel P “Pat” Black III Conference Center in the college’s Research and Economic Development Center. The Cleveland Indians Caravan will be rolling into Erie January 23, 2008 at the Dr Gertrude A Barber National Institute, 136 East Avenue. Doors open at 5 pm with a trivia contest and plenty of food and beverage. Cleveland Indians’ players, coaches and media staff will arrive at 6:30 pm to entertain Erie’s Tribe faithful, to answer fan’s questions and present a highlight film from last year’s baseball season. A donation of $8 per ticket will benefit programs at the Dr Gertrude A Barber National Institute. The Economic Development Corporation of Erie County is hosting its 26th Annual Employer of the Year Awards dinner at the Ambassador Banquet and Conference Center on Thursday, January 24. Glass Growers Gallery at 10 East Fifth St in Erie will be hosting an exhibit called ‘Spirital Thresholds’ by Annoel Krider. Color and design blend with tradition and balance in the southwestern inspired weavings of this fiber artist who also creates mixes-media objects and sculptures to further refine her vision. There will be an artists reception on Friday Jan 25 from 6-9 pm. The exhibit will be on display Jan 25 to March 11.
Exhibition opening receptions and other gallery activities are planned for Gallery Night on Friday, Jan 25 from 7-10 pm at the Erie Art Museum, Glass Growers Gallery, Urraro Gallery, Cummings Gallery at the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center at Mercyhurst College, Schuster Gallery at Gannon University, Allen Stoneware Gallery, Kuhn’s Framing and Gift Gallery, and ClaySpace. EMTA will provide FREE Bayliner trolley transportation, courtesy of the galleries, from 7-10:30 pm. Service will be provided every 45-minutes; a route map is available in advance at all participating galleries. “We’ve been organizing a Gallery Night for one year now. And with each evening, we gain attendance - particularly from new patrons - and new galleries join us. This effort continues to be tremendously successful,” said John Vanco, director of the Erie Art Museum. Galleries will also offer $50 gift certificates as incentives for patrons visiting as many galleries as they can in the evening. Gallery Night is organized by the Erie Art Museum.

Darkwood Consort, the world’s only touring viola and bass clarinet duo, brings an impressive repertoire spanning 10 centuries of music to its February performance at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Darkwood’s concert takes place at noon on Thursday, February 7, in the McGarvey Commons of the college’s Reed Union Building. The 6th annual “Spirit Against Cancer” Dance and Cheerleading Competition is scheduled for February 9 at 10 am in the Junker Center. “Spirit Against Cancer” was created in memory of Becky Hubler Decker. Her commitment to the community included serving as dance coach at Penn State Behrend, cheerleading coach at Edinboro University, she was captain of the Invaderettes dance team, and a member of the Buffalo Bills (Jills) dance team. Crystal Reports is a business intelligence application used to design and generate reports from a wide range of data sources. Several other applications, such as Microsoft Visual Studio, bundle an OEM version of Crystal Reports as a general purpose reporting tool. Crystal Reports became THE report writer when Microsoft released it with Visual Basic.
Pennsylvania Sea Grant is sponsoring a FREE one and a half day workshop March 13-14 at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in Erie. The workshop will provide an update and overview of current ballast water policy, legislation and research as it applies to the Great Lakes. Scientists, legal experts, legislators, industry personnel and agency staff will discuss the current state of ballast water policy, pending legislation, proposed ballast water treatment methods and evaluating the current risk of introduction and spread of AIS to Great Lakes ports by foreign and domestic ships.
