The State Ethics Commission is aware of Erie County Executive Mark DiVecchio having an Erie County employee using Erie County equipment being told to plow his driveway. They are also aware of DiVecchio using county employees to help his sister move and also using county employees to help set up a booth at Celebrate Erie for his catering business. What they need is official complaints from people involved. The SEC-3 form can be semi-completed online using your computer. Click into the data entry fields to enter your information. Ice fishing season has started on Presque Isle Day as an army (navy?) of ice fisherman were on the frozen waters of Lake Erie. The Fish and Boat Commission has said there should be a at least 4 inches of ice to go out. Anglers are catching good numbers of burbot in the channel.
The former Dana brake parts plant at 14th and Wayne Streets was sold for $1,255,000. Someone signed a lease for the facility through the end of Jan 2017. No idea on the buyer. Affinia purchased the Dana operations in Erie and North East, PA in 2004 and closed both plants in 2006.
Organizers have set the dates for the 20th annual Thurston Classic for June 12-15, 2008 at the Allegheny College Robertson Field Athletic Complex in Meadville, PA. Around 30 hot air balloons are expected at the event that draws over 30,000 every year.

Sophomore Meghan Agosta extended her team-record scoring streak to 20 games with three goals and two assists as the Lakers (19-5-2) blanked visiting Quinnipiac (3-18-4) 7-0 to sweep the weekend series.
The Gannon men’s basketball team (17-2, 9-1), ranked 15th in NCAA Division II, is finally headed home after a 4 game, 2 week road swing through Michigan. The ride will feel a little bit shorter after the Golden Knights fended off a furious second-half rally and subdued Hillsdale 80-75 Saturday afternoon at the Jesse Philips Arena. Kyle Goldcamp led the way with his third double-double of the season, recording 28 points and 12 rebounds. Vince Mosley and Pierre Howard added 16 and 15 points, respectively.
For The Sheriff, Scoot and Boogy, it was just another day at the office. The trio, better known as Ryan McLemore, Gerald Warrick and Larry Bryant, accounted for three-fourths of a quartet of double-figure scorers as Edinboro handed visiting Indiana (Pa) an 80-60 defeat at McComb Fieldhouse. The victory was Edinboro’s seventh straight and 17th in a row at home, boosting the Fighting Scots to 13-4 overall and 3-0 in the PSAC West. In addition, it was the 497th career win of head coach Greg Walcavich’s career. The Crimson Hawks, who came in with a share of the PSAC West lead, fell to 10-8 and 2-1, respectively. Joseph Jones (Erie Cathedral Prep) led the Fighting Scots with 20 points, the eighth time this year the 6’3” junior has scored 20-or-more points. He made 8 of 12 field goals, including 4 of 7 three-pointers, and added six assists.
Trailing by three with six minutes remaining, the Mercyhurst men’s basketball team used an 18-7 run to close the game and come away with a 68-60 win at Wayne State Saturday afternoon.
The Gannon women’s basketball team (11-8, 5-5) is heading home from a four-game road trip with some head scratching. Katie Cezat recorded 24 points and a school-record 25 rebounds to lead first-place Hillsdale to a 61-54 victory over Gannon Saturday afternoon at Jesse Philips Arena.
For the better part of thirty-five minutes the Edinboro women’s basketball team seemed poised to upset 5th ranked Indiana (Pa). Unfortunately, a 10-2 IUP run spelled defeat for the Fighting Scots. IUP held off the upset-minded Fighting Scots for an 85-81 win to improve to 18-1 overall and 3-0 in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots are now 11-6 and 1-2, respectively.
Freshman Erik Peterson’s second goal of the game, with just 13 seconds left in regulation, rallied Bentley to a second successive 3-3 overtime tie with Mercyhurst Saturday night. The Lakers, in the midst of a six-game road trip, are now 7-14-5 overall and 7-6-5 in Atlantic Hockey. The Falcons finished weekend play 6-13-5 and 6-7-5 respectively.
The Gannon University swimming teams defeated NCAA Division I host Canisius College Saturday afternoon. The men’s squad finished with a score of 143-119 over the Golden Griffins (3-8), giving the Golden Knights an 8-3 dual record this season. The Lady Knights improved to 9-4 in duals with their 136-118 victory over Canisius (2-11).
The Edinboro women’s swimming team put the finishing touches on its best regular season ever with a 127-78 win over Allegheny on Saturday. The victory boosted the Fighting Scots to 12-1 in the final dual meet of the season, while Allegheny fell to 4-5. On the men’s side, Edinboro posted a 119-86 win to improve to 4-6. Allegheny is 2-6.
Though missing three starters, a depleted Edinboro wrestling team won its 16th straight Eastern Wrestling League match with a 30-11 win at Lock Haven on Saturday night. The Fighting Scots, ranked 14th in the latest USA Today/NWCA/InterMat Top 25, improved to 7-2 and 3-0 in the EWL, while Lock Haven fell to 6-5 and 0-2, respectively.
The Gannon University wrestling team produced three first-place wins at the Jamestown Jayhawk Invitational, hosted by Jamestown Community College, Saturday. No team scores were kept. Kevin McElhaney (Jamestown, Pa/Jamestown Area) was named Outstanding Wrestler of the Match after a 4-0 run with two pins, earning him first place in the 141-pound weight class.
The 12th ranked Mercyhurst wrestling squad closed the East Coast Duals Saturday with a 33-10 victory over Carson-Newman but a tight 20-12 loss to No 10 Newberry.
The Edinboro women’s indoor track and field team competed in the Spartan Relays hosted by Case Western Reserve University on Saturday. No team scores were kept. Amber Sanders turned in the top individual performance, finishing third in the 1 mile run with a time of 5:40.13.
Steven Stamkos and Justin DiBenedetto scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Sarnia Sting to a 4-1 win over the Erie Otters in an Ontario Hockey League game played last night in front of 5,548 at the Tullio Arena. Erie lost for the fifth straight time to sink to 10-35-2-1. The next Otters home game takes place Friday, February 8th when the Brampton Battalion visit the Tullio Arena in a 7:30 pm start presented by Gannon University.

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages at Allegheny College and the Academy Theatre in Meadville will present an international film festival on Tuesdays on Jan 29, Feb 5 and 26, and March 4 and 11. The schedule of critically acclaimed films includes: Jan 29: Jehane Noujaim’s documentary “Control Room” (USA, 2004) takes a look at the war in Iraq from the Arab perspective. Feb 5: “Paris, Je T’aime” (France/Liechtenstein, 2006), a film by Olivier Assayas and Frédéric Auburtin, is an anthology of 18 five-minute shorts by well-known directors. Feb 26: “Das Leben der Anderen,” or “The Lives of Others” (Germany, 2006), by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, tells the story of an informant for the secret police in East Germany. March 4: Jorge Gaggero’s “Cama adentro,” or “Live-In Maid” (Argentina/Spain, 2004), tells the story of a complex relationship between an upper-class woman in Buenos Aires and her longtime housekeeper. March 11: Ping He’s “Tian di ying xiong,” or “Warriors of Heaven and Earth” (China/USA, 2003), set in the Gobi Desert, is a compelling historical epic. General admission to each film is $6. The Young Erie Professionals (yep!) Professional Leadership Development committee will host an Etiquette Dinner on Thursday, January 31 from 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm at the Colony Banquet and Catering facility, 3014 West 12th Street. Cathy Mester, senior lecturer in speech communication at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will discuss dinner etiquette and appropriate conversation. The Erie Art Museum’s First Fridays program for preschool kids ages 3 to 6 is slated for Friday, Feb 1, 10-11 am at the Erie Art Museum, 411 State Street with activities inspired from the Museum’s Zoo.Logic exhibit. First Fridays is a special program for 3-6 year olds and their families. Led by Museum staff, children and adults explore the art right in the galleries with storytelling, art-making and music. Darkwood Consort, the world’s only touring viola and bass clarinet duo, brings an impressive repertoire spanning 10 centuries of music to its February performance at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Darkwood’s concert takes place at noon on Thursday, February 7, in the McGarvey Commons of the college’s Reed Union Building. The 6th annual “Spirit Against Cancer” Dance and Cheerleading Competition is scheduled for February 9 at 10 am in the Junker Center. “Spirit Against Cancer” was created in memory of Becky Hubler Decker. Her commitment to the community included serving as dance coach at Penn State Behrend, cheerleading coach at Edinboro University, she was captain of the Invaderettes dance team, and a member of the Buffalo Bills (Jills) dance team. All proceeds from this special event will benefit the American Cancer Society. Crystal Reports is a business intelligence application used to design and generate reports from a wide range of data sources. Several other applications, such as Microsoft Visual Studio, bundle an OEM version of Crystal Reports as a general purpose reporting tool. Crystal Reports became THE report writer when Microsoft released it with Visual Basic.
Pennsylvania Sea Grant is sponsoring a FREE one and a half day workshop March 13-14 at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in Erie. The workshop will provide an update and overview of current ballast water policy, legislation and research as it applies to the Great Lakes. Scientists, legal experts, legislators, industry personnel and agency staff will discuss the current state of ballast water policy, pending legislation, proposed ballast water treatment methods and evaluating the current risk of introduction and spread of AIS to Great Lakes ports by foreign and domestic ships.
