WRTS-FM “Star 104” edged out WXBB “Bob FM” in the latest quarterly radio ratings. The complete ratings for Erie area commercial stations can be found here on Radio and Records. For those you you too young to remember, ‘radio stations’ transmit audio and were popular before computers, iPods, MP3 players and satellite receivers.

It was extremely slimy of Wild Cards Sports Grill and Bar at 1960 Rotunda Dr to close their doors effective Thursday without informing the employees. They had an ad in the newspaper on Friday. It takes a few days advance to place an ad so they had plenty of time to inform the employees. Just gutless.


Margaret Claire Reed of Corry, PA was born on August 8, 2006 with VACTERL Association. The reason it is called an association, rather than a syndrome is that all of the birth defects are linked, however it is still unknown which genes, or sets of genes cause these birth defects to occur. VACTERL stands for - vertebral, anal, cardiac, tracheoesophageal fistula, eosophageal atresia, renal, and limb. You can read more about Margaret at Miss Maggie.


The Holga Show 2.0 is the Second annual Photomedia Center show of fine art photography produced from toy cameras with plastic lenses, such as the Holga. Thirty-seven images by thirty-three artists were selected for exhibition from the entries received from an open call. Best of show honors were awarded to Tread, James Arnold, Nicolas Bellion, and Kelsey Jarboe. Photomedia Center is a nonprofit organization based in Erie, PA formed to promote the creation and exhibition of fine art photography and digital media and to foster its appreciation.

Iraqi concerned local citizens groups are a “boon to security,” and the Iraqi government soon will run this program, the commander of Multinational Security Transitional Command Iraq said Saturday. Army Lt Gen James M Dubik told military analysts in a conference call that while the concerned local citizens program now is run by Multinational Corps Iraq, “the government of Iraq is very much a part of the program, and at some point … they will run this program.” The program is an outgrowth of the “Anbar Awakening,” in which local tribal leaders tired of terrorist violence looked to coalition and Iraqi forces for protection and began cooperating with them. LTG Dubik is a native of Erie, PA. He is a graduate of Holy Rosary School, Erie Cathedral Prep and Gannon University, from where he received his commission though the ROTC program.

The Gannon University men’s basketball team (19-2, 11-1 GLIAC) rolled to a 63-47 win over Northwood in a game played Saturday afternoon in front of 1,385 at the Hammermill Center in Erie, PA. Gannon played without their best player, Vince Mosley, who sat out the game with the a bad foot. Pierre Howard had a team high 16 points for Gannon. Kyle Goldcamp had 15 points, 12 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals and an assist. With 22 seconds left in the game, Gannon called a time out to put walk-on Corey Dotchin into the game. Dotchin twisted his ankle and had to be helped off the floor as time expired. Gannon ranked 15th in NCAA Division II and third in Great Lakes region.

For the second-straight game, the Mercyhurst men’s basketball rallied from a double-digit halftime deficit to win in the final seconds. On Saturday, T J Mathis sank a jumper with five seconds left to oust visiting Saginaw Valley State 67-66.

For a few brief moments in the second half it looked as if Lock Haven would upset Edinboro at Thomas Field House for the second straight year. That was before the Fighting Scots ran off ten straight to hand the Bald Eagles a 78-65 loss. Edinboro has now won nine straight games, the most since the 2004-05 edition won nine in a row, to improve to 15-4 overall and 5-0 in the PSAC West.

The Penn State Behrend men’s basketball team stayed undefeated at home on the season with a big 73-47 win over Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday at the Junker Center in front of 906 fans. Kevin Buczynski (Erie Villa Maria) scored a team high 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Gannon University women’s basketball team (13-8, 7-5 GLIAC) beat Northwood 78-70 Saturday afternoon at the Hammermill Center in Erie, PA. Kristina Freeman had a career high 26 points to go along with 8 rebounds. Kim Vargas 16 points and 9 boards.

The Mercyhurst women’s basketball team held a 46-42 halftime lead over the Saginaw Valley Cardinals but could not put two halves together, losing 91-72 Saturday. Four Lakers scored in double-digits and Amy Achesinski led Mercyhurst with 23 points.

The Edinboro women’s basketball team lost its third straight game and fourth in the last five with a 65-64 loss at Lock Haven on Saturday. The setback leaves the Fighting Scots with an 11-8 record and 1-4 in the PSAC West.

The Behrend Lions women’s basketball team lost a well played home game 61-60 to the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats on Saturday night in the Junker Center in front of 238 fans.Julia Andrus (Corry) had a team high 27 points for Behrend.

The 13th ranked Gannon University wrestling team earned its fifth dual win this year with a 25-15 win against host West Liberty State Saturday evening.

The Gannon University swimming teams concluded Saturday’s tri-meet with the men defeating host Indiana University of Pennsylvania 66-29 and Penn State Altoona 88-7. The Lady Knights split the day, falling 56-39 to IUP and defeating the Lions 91-3.

Mercyhurst got second period special teams’ goals from freshman Mike Gurtler and sophomore Neil Graham and held on to turn back Holy Cross 2-1 Saturday night to compolete a weekend sweep. The Lakers, 6-3 winners Friday, improved to 9-14-5 overall and to 9-6-5 in the Atlantic Hockey Association. The Crusaders fell to 8-12-6 and 7-10-3 respectively.

Chris MacKinnon scored once and added three assists to lead the Owen Sound Attack to a 6-4 win over the Erie Otters in an Ontario Hockey League game played last night in front of 2,318 at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre. Justin Hodgman and Luke Gazdic paced the Otters each with a goal and an assist. Ryan O’Reilly and Paul Cianfrini also scored for Erie, who dropped to 11-36-2-1 on the season. The Otters finish a three-game road trip tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon when they travel to Brampton to take on the Battalion at 2 pm.

The Erie RiverRats will hold their last open tryout camp on Saturday, February 9 at Family First Sports Park, 8155 Oliver Road, in Erie, PA from 7-9 am. The Erie RiverRats, affiliated with the American Indoor Football Association, are coming off a successful winning season which included qualifying for the AIFA playoffs in its first season as a new franchise. Players attending the tryout will be tested in the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, broad jump, and individual position skill/agility sessions. RiverRats Head Coach Shawn Liotta and his staff will be conducting the tryout, and may sign deserving players to contracts for the 2008 AIFA season immediately or soon following the tryout. The Erie Playhouse production of Crowns will be performed Sun Feb 3 at 2 pm, Wed Feb 6 at 7:30 pm, Thu Feb 7 at 7:30 pm, Fri Feb 8 at 7:30 pm, Sat Feb 9 at 7:30 pm and Sun Feb 10 at 2 pm.

Darkwood Consort, the world’s only touring viola and bass clarinet duo, brings an impressive repertoire spanning 10 centuries of music to its February performance at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Darkwood’s concert takes place at noon on Thursday, February 7, in the McGarvey Commons of the college’s Reed Union Building. The performance is sponsored by Music at Noon: The Logan Series and admission is FREE to the public.


The 14th annual Sarah Backstrom Memorial Women’s and Girl’s Hockey Tournament will be held in Erie February 8-10, 2008. Admission is FREE to all games. About 1,000 young ladies plus family and friends will be in town for the weekend. Hotel rooms will be hard to come by and expect delays at restaurants. Who was Sarah Backstrom? She was a feisty red headed defensewoman who gave all off her love of the game and passion to play it to the Erie Lady Lions. Sarah fought every battle to the end, with passion and determination. The Erie Lady Lions lost Sarah to Leukemia but have never lost her spirit.

The Chautauqua-Lake Erie Wine Trail Wine and Chocolate Weekend will take place 10 am to 5 pm, Feb 9-10. Tickets, which can be purchased online or by phone, are $21 a person. None will be sold after Friday Feb 8. If you are unable to get tickets to the event, you can still visit the wineries for wine tastings, but you won’t get to sample the goodies and get the recipe cards.

The 6th annual “Spirit Against Cancer” Dance and Cheerleading Competition is scheduled for February 9 at 10 am in the Junker Center. “Spirit Against Cancer” was created in memory of Becky Hubler Decker. Her commitment to the community included serving as dance coach at Penn State Behrend, cheerleading coach at Edinboro University, she was captain of the Invaderettes dance team, and a member of the Buffalo Bills (Jills) dance team. All proceeds from this special event will benefit the American Cancer Society. The Association of Program Members (APM) of General Electric Transportation in Erie PA announced that it will be sponsoring the 13th Annual Winter Wishes Benefit Gala for the Foundation of Western Pennsylvania on February 16, 2008. Each year, the members of APM reach out to the community to collect donations for the silent auctions, live auctions and raffles that are held at the event. They also solicit “table sponsors” from local businesses. As a table sponsor, the business’ name appears on the centerpiece showing their support for this wonderful event as well as in any promotional materials that they put together for the function. The money raised with the auctioned items donated by local businesses will help provide funding for Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 17 from 12:30-3:30 pm and/or 8-11 pm and get ready to “rock and bowl” with the Erie Playhouse Family at Eastway Lanes, 4110 Buffalo Road. The cost for a Family/Team (4 or 5 bowlers) for one session is $80. Individual bowlers are welcome - Adults $20 and $15 for children 12 and under. Teams registering by Feb 14 will recieve a $10 discount. The cost includes 3 games, shoes (no discount if you bring your own) and unlimited pop and pizza. A cash bar and additional food will be available. Contests and games of chance throughout each bowling session.

On Friday, February 22, the Penn State Behrend RFID Center of Excellence and the RFID Project of the NWPA Technology Industry Partnership will host Eric Domski for a talk on Auto ID Technologies with SAP. Eric is the Auto ID Solution Director for SAP Labs. Eric will speak from 10-11am at the Research and Economic Development Center, Room 180 on the campus of Penn State Behrend in the new Black School of Business Auditorium. Although the talk with be centered around SAP, the concepts will also apply to other ERP and enterprise applications and will be a great source for solution ideas to anyone using, or considering use of AutoID. There will a fund raiser for Marine Sergeant Art Fuller on Saturday Feb 23 from 6 pm to 1 am at the North East Vet’s Club at 28 Vine Street in North East, PA. SGT Fuller suffered a stroke and is unable to return to work. The cost is $6 at the door which will cover food (chili, hot dogs and macaroni salad) from 6-9 pm. There will be a Chinese auction and cash bar available and the band Black Diamond will be playing from 9 pm - 1 am. SGT Fuller, an Iraq veteran, is from Corry Pa.

The 2008 Erie Outdoor Sport and Travel Expo will be held February 29 - March 2 at the Erie Bayfront Convention Center. Hours: Noon-9 pm Friday, 10 am-8 pm Saturday and 10 am-5 pm Sunday.

Erie CareerLink is hosting Crystal Reports Training in both introductory and advanced sessions on March 3-6. Info and Registration form. Crystal Reports is a business intelligence application used to design and generate reports from a wide range of data sources. Several other applications, such as Microsoft Visual Studio, bundle an OEM version of Crystal Reports as a general purpose reporting tool. Crystal Reports became THE report writer when Microsoft released it with Visual Basic.

Pennsylvania Sea Grant is sponsoring a FREE one and a half day workshop March 13-14 at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in Erie. The workshop will provide an update and overview of current ballast water policy, legislation and research as it applies to the Great Lakes. Scientists, legal experts, legislators, industry personnel and agency staff will discuss the current state of ballast water policy, pending legislation, proposed ballast water treatment methods and evaluating the current risk of introduction and spread of AIS to Great Lakes ports by foreign and domestic ships. As the signature event for Young Erie Professionals (yep!), the Generation-E Leadership Awards recognize young professionals who are paving the way to the future of Erie, Pennsylvania. The 2008 winners will be recognized the evening of Friday, March 28 at the Ambassador Banquet and Conference Center.

There will be a Rust Belt Bloggers Summit on July 11-12 in Erie. People from Youngstown, Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other area cities will be attendance to discuss economic development issues in the region.


Roar on the Shore
The Manufacturers’ Association and Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority annual Roar on the Shore motorcycle rally will be held July 17-20, 2008. While downtown Erie serves as the hub of the rally, related events take place throughout the city and region. Most notably, two outdoor concerts featuring major artists will be held Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, at Liberty Park along Presque Isle Bay.
