A City of Erie Street Department plow got stuck Sunday afternoon on East 31st Street about 40 feet west of East Avenue. Hilarious site. The street has just enough of an incline that along with the heavy snow the vehicle was plowing it just couldn’t get enough traction and slid into a snow bank. A heavy duty wrecker was dispatched to pull it out. So many cars are buried under the snow on the streets that the few plows the department has don’t get very far in any given hour.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that former President Bill Clinton is tentatively scheduled to appear in Erie PA on Wednesday March 12. Fathers are advised to keep an eye on their daughters during his time in the area. President Clinton has yet to address issues concerning contributions to his presidential library brought up by former Senator Bill Bradley (D-NJ) on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer - “Are there favors attached to $500,000 or $1 million contributions? And what do I mean by favors? I mean, pardons that are granted; investigations that are squelched; contracts that are awarded; regulations that are delayed.”
Turns out the Flint Phantoms of the Continental Indoor Football League bought the old, worn-out artificial turf that the Erie Freeze used. it’s in the Perani Arena in Flint, Michigan. The Erie Freeze logo is still very visible on the rug.
The NCAA announced on Sunday night that the Edinboro University men’s basketball team is one of 64 teams to receive a bid to play in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Fighting Scots were one of eight teams selected for the East Regional to be held at California (Pa). Edinboro is the number three seed and will face Millersville, the number six seed, in Saturday’s quarterfinals. The two teams met in the PSAC semifinals, with the Fighting Scots prevailing, 74-58. Earlier in the year the Marauders claimed a 78-73 win on their home court.
In a rematch of the 2007 Division II Championship game, the Mercyhurst Lakers men’s lacrosse team never found an offensive rhythm against the LeMoyne Dolphins, suffering a 17-1 loss Sunday. Sophomore Derek Pino scored his first goal of the season and the lone tally for the Lakers late in the third period.
The Mercyhurst softball team came up one extra-inning loss from sweeping four games in the Francis Marion Invitational over the weekend, ending the tournament with three straight wins to move to 6-6 on the year.
The Gannon University women’s water polo team opened Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) conference action by playing host to University of Michigan and Slippery Rock University Sunday afternoon. Gannon (3-9, 1-1) fell to Division I Michigan 19-7 but rebounded with an 11-6 victory over Slippery Rock in the matinee game.
The Penn State Behrend women’s water polo team lost two games on Sunday, March 9th in the Junker pool. The Behrend Lions were first defeated 12-8 by the Washington and Jefferson Presidents and then 17-3 by the Michigan Wolverines.
When famed high school basketball coach Ken Carter literally locked his undefeated, state play-off bound team out of the gym at Richmond High School in California, and forced them to hit the books and stop counting on athletic potential as the only ticket out of a tough, inner-city life, he sent a powerful message. As the inspiration behind the 2005 film, “Coach Carter,” Carter will bring his message of accountability, integrity, teamwork and leadership to Mercyhurst College on Monday, March 10, at 8:15 pm in the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center (PAC). His free, public lecture, “What you see is what you get: How to visualize and reach your goals,” is an offering of the Mercyhurst Student Government Speakers Series. Tickets to Carter’s talk are available free of charge at the PAC Box Office for Mercyhurst students (one each) and faculty, staff and administration (two each) beginning March 3. Tickets are available to the general public at two apiece on March 10.

Pennsylvania Sea Grant is sponsoring a FREE one and a half day workshop March 13-14 at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in Erie. The workshop will provide an update and overview of current ballast water policy, legislation and research as it applies to the Great Lakes. Scientists, legal experts, legislators, industry personnel and agency staff will discuss the current state of ballast water policy, pending legislation, proposed ballast water treatment methods and evaluating the current risk of introduction and spread of AIS to Great Lakes ports by foreign and domestic ships. Under the direction of Ronald Stitt, Allegheny College’s student jazz band will perform a free concert on Thursday, March 13, at 3:15 pm in Shafer Auditorium. The 30-member ensemble will play from a repertoire of Big Band favorites including pieces by composers Stan Kenton, Sammy Nestico and Quincy Jones.
Dan Desrochers of the Community Blood Bank will be a guest bartender at Molly Brannigans in Erie from 6:30 to 7 pm on Thursday March 13 for a fund raiser for the Erie Hall of Fame. The entire celebrity bartending night runs 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Tommy Fleming will be there to preview his performance at Mercyhurst’s Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center on Friday. Tommy will be joined by Erie’s Rince na Tiarna Irish Dancers - a wonderful grand start to the Saint Patrick’s Day weekend.

The Gannon University Theater Department presents Jane Austen’s Love and Freindship March 14-15 at the Gannon Schuster Theatre. Adapted for the stage by Fr Shawn Clerkin, this collection of letters by Jane Austen will be performed at the Schuster Theatre in conjunction with the Alex Clemente Fund for Performing and Related Arts. The Manufacturers’ Association of Northwest Pennsylvania will host an economic development forum featuring members of Erie’s lead economic development team during the monthly Eggs ‘n’ Issues briefing, starting at 8 am on Wednesday, March 19 at the Association’s Conference Center, 2171 West 38th Street. The Erie Playhouse Youtheatre presents Around the World in 80 Days March 28-30, April 4-6. Adapted from the novel by Jules Verne, Around the World in 80 Days, delightfully tells the story of Phileas Fogg’s and his servant, Passepartout’s, whistle-stop journey, as they try to satisfy a wager that they can circumnavigate the world in eighty days. Performances on March 28 and 29, as well as April 4 and 5 will begin at 7 pm. Performances on March 20 and April 6 will begin at 2 pm.
The Penn State Behrend Concert Band’s upcoming “Evening of Musical Tomfoolery” will be held, appropriately, on Tuesday, April 1. The fun begins at 8 pm in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building. Admission is FREE. The concert band will perform a selection of witty, whimsical pieces under the direction of Gary Viebranz, director of instrumental music at the college. On the program are works by Leopold Mozart, PDQ Bach (“the 21st of JS Bach’s 20 children”), film composers Danny Elfman and Luis Bonfa, and percussionist Lamar Burkhalter, who also holds the title of musical director for the NFL’s Houston Texans. “We’re presenting this concert in the spirit of April Fool’s Day, so we also have several surprises in store,” Viebranz promises.
Calling all artists and those who love art! A community art show, “Throughout The Spectrum: Exploring Autism Through Art,” will be sponsored by the Barber National Institute in commemoration of Autism Awareness Month. The show, which provides an exciting opportunity to come together to discover all aspects of autism through various forms of artistic expression, will be held April 4-9 at the Barber National Institute. Who can submit art work include: Children and adults with autism spectrum disorders who want to share their creative work; Family members or professionals whose lives are touched by autism; and Artists from the community who want to show their support for autism. The charity bellydance event, “Shimmy for a Cure”, will be held May 31 at the Erie Playhouse in downtown Erie, PA. This event will benefit the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation.
Head Coach John T Reilly of Gannon University will conduct three sessions of basketball camp this summer. Sessions will be held June 9-13, June 23-27 and August 4-8. His coaching staff, area high school coaches and several of his players will serve as camp instructors. The sessions are designed as teaching camps that emphasize the fundamentals of the game of basketball. The camps are for students in Grades 3-10.
There will be a Rust Belt Bloggers Summit on July 11-12 in Erie. People from Youngstown, Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other area cities will be attendance to discuss economic development issues in the region.

My great-grandfather was James Autin, the founder of the AKD Printing Company in Erie. Harry Kellar, was an investor as well as a magician, and was the "K" in AKD.
