Erie PA News and Events for Wednesday March 19, 2008

Posted by Dennis on March 19, 2008
Erie, Pennsylvania has been awarded an NBA Development League franchise, it was announced yesterday at a press conference at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie. The team will join Reno, NV - which was awarded a D-League franchise on Feb. 29 - for their inaugural seasons in 2008-09. “When we decided to pursue the opportunity to acquire and start-up an NBA D-League franchise, we immediately knew Erie would be a fantastic location. Erie is clearly a ‘basketball town’ and the entire community - led by the various city officials - opened their arms and welcomed the new opportunity,” said Steve Demetriou on behalf of the Erie NBA D-League ownership group. “We truly believe that this new team will be a successful, winning and enjoyable long-term professional sports entertainment venue for the Erie community.” Like Reno, Erie’s NBA affiliations will not be determined until this summer. Erie will be associated with two or three NBA teams that can assign their first and second-year players to their affiliate a maximum of three times per season. This season the NBA has assigned over 30 players to the D-League, giving young players a chance to further develop through valuable playing time. “Our league is growing every day - not only are we adding two new teams for the ‘08-09 season, but attendance is up over 20 percent, ticket sales and sponsorship revenues are up, and more and more people are tuning in online to watch our games,” said D-League President, Dan Reed. “I’m excited and proud to welcome Erie into the NBA and D-League family, and anticipate that the community will embrace our elite NBA-caliber brand of basketball, enjoy our entertaining and affordable fan experience, and welcome the positive impact our players and staff will have in the community.” Tickets for Erie D-League games are on sale and can be purchased via their website at www.nbaerie.com or by calling (814) 790-5600. Games will be played at Louis J Tullio Arena.
About 200 season tickets have already been sold. The team will employ about 10 full-time staff, a dozen part-time, plus a roster for 15 professional players. Heard the franchise was estimated at being worth at least $5 million. (The Erie SeaWolves are worth an estimated $20 million.) Although the Erie D-League team and the Erie Otters seasons run at the same time, scheduling shouldn’t be too much of an issue as Ron Sertz is President of the basketball team and part owner of the Erie Otters.

Crawford County DA Francis Schultz dropped child corruption charges against former priest Thomas Smith. Schultz dropped the charges because the statute of limitations had run out. The ONLY reason the charges were dropped were because the statute of limitations had run out.

Bebko-Jones was charged with forgery, tampering with public records and a number of other charges for faking names and signatures on her last nominating petition.

I had this story awhile back on an Erie connection to a Michigan business -
The Michigan Milk Producers Company was once owned by a family from Erie. In 1860, the founder, Abraham Sullivan, sold milk from his farm just west of Erie, Pa. In 1907, when his son, FW Sullivan, was on his way back from the International Association of Milk Dealers convention in Chicago, he stopped to see his friend Ben Morgan in Battle Creek Michigan and learned a Battle Creek milk business, the Milk Producers Company, was for sale. The company’s historic combined livery and garage, referred to as Historic Sullivan Barn, is located on South Cass Street.
Carol McLain wrote and filled in a few missing details with even more of an Erie connection to the story-

I am Ben Morgan’s great, great granddaughter. Ben (the first American-born child of William and Susan Morgan) lived in the Erie, PA region until he was 37 yrs old. Hearing about Michigan farmland being available, he and most of his family moved to the Battle Creek area to buy land and continue their dairy businesses. Many Morgan-bred Holsteins are still alive and well today. Thanks for even more insight into my past. What a blast!

Women across Africa, the Middle East, and India paint themselves with henna as part of social celebrations. In many cultures the bride is adorned with especially intricate patterns for her wedding night. The tattoo is temporary and usually lasts two weeks. “Erie now boasts several henna experts. Gannon has a large population of Indian students including several who are adept at henna. Erie is also home to many Somali and Sudanese women who learned the art traditionally, from other women, in their native countries,” said Armor.
