The (Southwest Florida) News-Press did a story on how haggling at retail stores is sweeping the country. The story quotes Dan Borgia, associate professor of finance at Florida Gulf Coast University - “It’s a throwback to when I was a kid. I grew up in Erie Pa, and I remember my Italian grandmother who’d haggle buying fruits and vegetables in the market. I’d watch in amazement.”
Tops Friendly Markets has joined with H2Gro Greenhouses to sell hydroponically grown, on-the-vine tomatoes in all of its stores. Tops has two Erie locations. Irrigation water for the tomatoes is recycled using an UV sterilizer. In addition, H2Gro’s greenhouse is heated using a heat recovery system surrounding seven electrical generators at neighboring Innovative Energy that are powered by collected Methane gas released from a Modern landfill.
The Mercyhurst College Public Safety Institute will conduct tests for firefighters seeking state certification on Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26, at the Erie County Public Safety Training Facility in Franklin Center. Fifteen candidates will take a 100-question written exam on Friday night, followed by a 12-station skills test on Saturday, which will feature a live burn tower, smoke maze, and chemical burn pit. The candidates must demonstrate an acceptable level of proficiency in both the written and skills tests in order to be certified as Firefighter 1 by the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy. This year, five of the candidates are from Canada, and the other 10 are from the Meadville, Erie, Lake Shore and Fuller Hose fire departments. This voluntary certification is open to both volunteer and paid firefighters, and is intended to identify emergency service personnel who demonstrate competency in the performance requirements necessary to perform the duties of a firefighter. Certified firefighters are eligible to apply to the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications and receive national certification. The Erie County Public Safety Training Facility is located behind the Franklin Center Fire Department, approximately five miles south of I-90 on Route 98.
The Allegheny College commencement will be held at 10 am on Sunday May 11 on the Bentley Hall lawn (in case of rain, Wise Center Sports Forum). The speaker will be Robert A Vukovich, CEO and chairman of Wellspring Pharmaceuticals Inc. There will be approximately 550 graduates. The mascot at Allegheny College used to be a laughing alligator, but now it’s a mean looking alligator.

Sunday’s Erie SeaWolves game at Altoona was postponed due to rain. The two clubs will meet in a doubleheader on Saturday, May 3 at 5:05 pm at Blair County Ballpark. The SeaWolves will continue their seven-day road trip on Monday night in Harrisburg…6:05 First Pitch.
In both games of Mercyhurst’s baseball doubleheader with Tiffin Sunday, the Lakers trailed heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. And in both contests, the Lakers came away with walk-off victories. Craig Denman’s RBI single gave Mercyhurst a 5-4 victory in the opener and Jamie Walczak’s RBI double down the left field line capped a five-run comeback to get a 10-9 win in game two.
The Penn State Behrend baseball team hosted the Frostburg Bobcats on Sunday, April 20. The men came into the day undefeated in conference play and looked to add two more to the wins column. The Behrend Lions came away on top in game one 4-2, but would fall to the Bobcats 7-2 in their second game.
The Gannon University baseball team (7-25, 3-17) lost a second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader to Ashland (28-10, 10-4) Sunday afternoon at Gannon University Field, concluding a six-game homestand. The Golden Knights fell 22-3 in game one and 18-2 in game two.
The Allegheny baseball team (14-14, 7-7 NCAC) pushed its overall and conference records to .500 for the first time since mid-March with a doubleheader sweep of Oberlin (8-21, 3-9 NCAC) on Sunday. The Gators took the opener 6-2 then won by a score of 8-5 in the nightcap.
The Gannon softball team ended the road portion of its 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season schedule with a doubleheader split Sunday afternoon at Hillsdale. The Chargers won game one 4-0, before the Lady Knights took game two by an 8-7 score.
The Mercyhurst softball team handed defending GLIAC Player of the Year Molly Yetman a rare loss on the mound and the Lakers split a doubleheader with the team at the top of the GLIAC standings, Wayne State, Sunday. Mercyhurst picked up a critical 3-1 win in the opener before losing game two 7-0.
The Gannon University women’s water polo team (9-14) closed its final day at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division Championships and the 2008 season with a pair of losses to the University of Michigan and Mercyhurst College Sunday. The Wolverines blanked the Lady Knights 21-0 (6-0, 7-0, 6-0, 2-0) in the morning match and Gannon lost 16-6 (2-2, 7-2, 2-1, 5-1) to Mercyhurst in the nightcap.
Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, hosts an evening of English, French and Italian art songs presented by Salvatore Champagne, associate professor of singing at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, today, Monday, April 21. Champagne’s recital will begin at 7:30 pm in the Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel and is free and open to the public. He will be accompanied by John Champagne, his brother and an associate professor of English at Penn State Behrend.
Got Math Game? Elementary math education students and faculty at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host two Elementary Parent Math Night events to help moms and dads help their young children. “These nights are free and open to all parents of local elementary-age kids,” said Danielle Goodwin, assistant professor of mathematics education and program host. “We’ll share fun math activities and games they can use at home to build their child’s math skills and number sense.” Goodwin added that the evenings are “for adults only. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate children.” A Elementary Parent Math Night is scheduled on Tuesday, April 22. It will be held from 5:30 until 7:30 pm in 114 Reed Union Building. The Allegheny College Art Department will present its Senior Projects Exhibit in the Bowman, Penelec and Megahan Galleries from Tuesday, April 22 through Saturday, May 10. This show is an opportunity for graduating studio art majors and art and technology majors to present to the public their senior projects, which are the culminating experience of their art studies. A public reception for the exhibit will be held in the galleries on Tuesday, April 22 from 7 until 9 pm. All events are free and open to the public. A Gannon University professor on Thursday, May 1, will host a discussion on the individual psychology of Alfred Adler. Ken McCurdy, PhD, associate professor, Gannon University community counseling program, will discuss “The Nuts and Bolts of Adlerian Clinical Supervision.” The discussion will be held from 8-10 pm in the Dean’s office on the first floor of Gannon’s Palumbo Academic Center, 824 Peach Street. The event will serve as the monthly TAPTalks colloquium hosted by Gannon University. In celebration of The National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2008 Preservation Month theme, “Place Matters,” the Erie Center for Design and Preservation is hosting a lecture, seminar and walking tour on May 9-10. All three events are FREE and open to the public. The internationally-known founder of the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, Mr. Arthur Ziegler, will be the featured speaker at the Erie Center for Design and Preservation’s first public event. Ziegler’s lecture, “The Good Works of Historic Preservation,” will be delivered Friday, May 9 at 7 PM in the Orientation Theatre of the Erie Maritime Museum, adjacent to the Blasco Memorial Library on Erie’s Bayfront. Ziegler says “historic preservation should be looked upon as both a cultural and economic development tool, leading to community revitalization, local investment, jobs, and a better quality of life.” On Saturday morning, May 10, the Erie Center for Design and Preservation (ECDP) will sponsor a seminar on historic preservation. Topics include: an overview of the National Register of Historic Places, the economics of preservation, and the tax credits afforded to property owners who rehabilitate historic buildings. The seminar will be held Saturday, May 10 from 9 AM to Noon at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 20 East 5th Street. On Saturday afternoon, May 10 , Mr Jeff Kidder AIA of Kidder Wachter Architecture will offer a 90 minute architectural walking tour of lower State Street and Perry Square. Kidder will meet members of the tour on the front steps of the Erie Art Museum, 417 State Street at 1 PM. Kidder will discuss the history of the City of Erie, neighborhood changes and attributes of the remaining historic structures. Kidder believes that “historic preservation in Erie is an effective tool for managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering local pride and maintaining community character while enhancing livability.” Kidder serves on the City of Erie Planning Commission, the Downtown Improvement District board, the Erie Center for Design and Preservation board, and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission Historic Preservation board.
The charity bellydance event, “Shimmy for a Cure”, will be held May 31 at the Erie Playhouse in downtown Erie, PA. This event will benefit the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation.
Head Coach John T Reilly of Gannon University will conduct three sessions of basketball camp this summer. Sessions will be held June 9-13, June 23-27 and August 4-8. His coaching staff, area high school coaches and several of his players will serve as camp instructors. The sessions are designed as teaching camps that emphasize the fundamentals of the game of basketball. The camps are for students in Grades 3-10.
There will be a Rust Belt Bloggers Summit on July 11-12 in Erie. People from Youngstown, Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other area cities will be attendance to discuss economic development issues in the region.
