Erie PA News and Events for Saturday May 3, 2008

Handicapping guru Andy Beyer has picked Pyro to win today’s Kentucky Derby. Andy Beyer, a Harvard University graduate from Erie PA, created the Beyer Speed Figures used by bettors that measures how fast a horse runs on any given track. “Synthetic” racing surfaces have replaced the old dirt tracks and made the Beyer Speed Figures nearly useless. Big Brown is the favorite followed by Colonel John. You can place wagers on the Kentucky Derby at Presque Isle Downs and Casino. Live racing there returns May 9. In case you were wondering, Presque Isle Downs currently has 31 job openings.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education has informed the state’s 501 school districts of the amounts each will receive from state gaming revenues to fund property tax relief for the coming fiscal year. Here are the estimates for Erie County by district for the average property: Corry- data missing; Erie City - $343; Fairview - $100; Fort LeBoeuf - $200; General McLane - $149; Girard - $278; Harbor Creek - $118; Iroquois - $364; Millcreek Township - $74; North East - $213; Northwestern - $170; Union City Area - $229; and Wattsburg Area - $163.

Country Fair Convenience Store customers in the tri-state area shattered all their previous fundraising records by raising more than $100,000 for the local Muscular Dystrophy Association through the sale of shamrocks and Krispy Kreme Donuts. (Dang, that’s serious money for a great cause.) According to Paul Rankin, Vice President of Country Fair, “We are so very proud of our employees and our customers for breaking last year’s record of over $86,000, and making it possible to provide the help that so many of our local children desperately need that are afflicted with these crippling diseases.” Over that last 4 years, the 75 Country Fair Stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York have helped raise almost $330,000 for Jerry’s Kids through the shamrock and donut sale which began this year in the middle of February. This year’s record fundraising pace should put Country Fair again into national contention. Four stores and their managers were among the 75 stores participating in the shamrock sale who earned a special MDA Golden Shamrock Citation. They were the Pomfret, NY store raising $6,153 - Shirley Anderson, manager; Springville, NY $5,319 - Patrick Farrington, manager; 8th and East Avenue, $4,003 Erie, PA - Tamela Mathis, manager; and Olean, NY $3,581.00 - Steve Wozniak, manager. The Muscular Dystrophy Association provides services to anyone with one of the 43 diseases that the Association covers. The local MDA chapter makes possible clinic visits for its clients at Northshore Clinical Associates—under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Esper. In addition, MDA assists with the purchase of manual or power wheelchairs, communication devices, summer camp programs, flu shots, long leg braces, and equipment repairs up to $500 annually. Because MDA does not receive government funds, programs like the Country Fair Shamrock Sale provide the necessary funds to support local MDA families.
