Erie PA News and Events for Monday May 12, 2008

A traffic accident Sunday night on West Townhill Road, between Peach St and Perry Highway, claimed the life of one person when the car burst into flames. The single vehicle accident happened around midnight. The victim was burned so badly authorities couldn’t determine the gender let alone the identity of the victim.

The horrible accident on Saturday on I-90 claimed the lives of six Indian citizens, four employees of Syntel and the spouses of two of the victims. Killed were Kaushik Deb, Manoj Jharia, Mili Jharia, Nitin Agarwal, Swati Agarwal, and Shubham Choudory. The Troy, Michigan company Syntel is seeking donations to help the families. Jeff at Erie Shipping News reported that Panam Flota is sailing to Erie to pick up 3 million gallons of biodiesel produced by Lake Erie Biofuels.

Ana Yang, who ran the Obama office in Erie, has returned to her job with hot start-up FriendFeed. Yang worked on campaigns in five states for Obama. He lost all five primary races. McCain supporters must hope she decides to help out in the general election.

Lake Erie - Allegheny Earth Force celebrates an annual Youth Summit in Erie on Tuesday, May 13 at Presque Isle State Park. At the Summit over 400 students participate in programs provided by 40 -50 facilitators covering topics such as birding, wetlands, geology, cooperative activities and fishing. Young people who have been part of Earth Force Environmental projects will gather to celebrate and share their successes. In addition, they will participate in guided hikes and hands-on workshops.

The Erie SeaWolves were swept by the Harrisburg Senators following a 7-6 loss on Sunday at Jerry Uht Park. The ‘Wolves have now lost seven straight games. The SeaWolves are off on Monday and hit the road for a 6 game road trip playing three each in Bowie and Binghamton. The next home game is Monday, May 19.

Penn State Behrend captured the 2008 AMCC Baseball Championship at the Behrend baseball field on Sunday by holding off Pitt-Bradford 9-8 in front of 295 fans. The Behrend Lions snatched the AMCC title and the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by building an early lead and then fending off a furious ninth inning rally by the Panthers. The Behrend Lions (34-10) captured their first AMCC title since 2003 and will now head to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. The NCAA baseball championship brackets, site locations, and game times will be announced on Monday.

For the second week in a row, the Erie RiverRats of the AIFA came back from a late fourth quarter deficit to win at home on a touchdown pass in the last fifteen seconds of the game, as Erie defeated the Huntington Heroes by the final score of 47-43. With 13 seconds left on the clock and the ‘Rats trailing by three, Erie QB Rod Rutherford threw a 6-yard pass into the end zone intended for WR Darmel Whitfield, who kept his concentration as the ball travelled through several defenders, bounced off a teammate, and ended safely in his hands for the go-ahead touchdown. Erie DB Sam Reynolds then secured the victory for the ‘Rats by intercepting a long pass by Huntington QB Darnell Kennedy. With the win, Erie remains in first place in the North division with a record of 7-2, a half-game ahead of second-place Reading

The Columbus Comets crushed the Erie Illusion 48-0 in a National Womens Football Association game. Erie is now 1-2 on the season. They are on the road again this week traveling to play the West Virginia Wonders on Saturday.

John and Brian Vergotz will be entering their first year of Pro Modified Racing Association competition in 2008 with Team Corvette Fever. The Vergotz team has raced since 1983, and has operated its own car for about the past ten years. The former WAR (World Alcohol Racers) 2005 Pro Modified champion team is sponsored by A-1 Automotive of Erie at 433 East 9th St, and is crewed by Shane McLaughlin, John Orsini, Rick Folgle and 7 year old crew chief John Vergotz, Jr. Their first event of the season is May 17-18 at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario.

The Northwest Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission is holding a seminar called Gaining Access to Europe on May 13 at the Ambassador Banquet and Conference Center, 7794 Peach Street in Erie. Cost is $50. You must register by May 6.

The musical “1776”, the first play in which members of the Erie Cathedral Prep Alumni have been invited back to perform, is scheduled for a four-day run in the Erie Cathedral Prep auditorium on the weekend of May 15-18. This production is the third and final performance for this year by the Prep Performing Arts Department, which is under the direction of Father Michael DeMartinis. The special guest director for the show is Almi Clerkin, the managing director of the Erie Playhouse. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at the Prep bookstore for $8 (adults) and $6 (children and seniors). Performances will be at 7:30 PM on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and Sunday’s performance will be at 2 PM.

Join your friends for the 6th Annual Bike Around The Bay in Erie, PA. Gather with hundreds of tri state bicyclists on Saturday, May 17, in Erie, PA at the Intermodal Transportation Center on the Bayfront Parkway to bike around beautiful Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie. The event is a fundraiser for the non-profit youth environmental education organization Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force. There is a 10 mile Town Tour, a 30 mile Bay Tour and a 50 mile Endurance Tour. Registration is $17 for individuals and $35 for families.

In celebration of International Museum Day, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) will offer a “buy one general admission, get one general admission free” deal on Sunday, May 18. In Pennsylvania’s Great Lakes Region, the offer applies to both the Erie Maritime Museum and US Brig Niagara and the Drake Well Museum.

Theatre 145 will be holding open auditions for cast members of the musical “Remembering Janis.” This play a tribute to singer/songwriter Janis Joplin. “Remembering Janis” is set for a three week run starting on Friday, June 13, 2008. Cast members needed are: Speaker - This role is for a male or female, aged 30-50 years of age. The character is a 1960’s-70’s hippie type. There is no singing involved with his role. The speaker relates his/her memories of Joplin during her career between sets of “Janis’” songs. Be prepared with a 1 minute, in character, monologue. The 11th annual Memorial Day Shootout soccer tournament will be held at Family First Sports Park in Erie PA, May 24-26. Over 250 teams U9-U19 are registered for the tourney. This is one of the top college recruiting tournaments in the country with dozens of colleges sending representatives. All area hotel rooms are booked and waits at area restaurants are expected.

On Saturday, June 7, 2008 there will be a Nautical Flea Market from 10 am to 1 pm at the BCMS (Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies) 40 Holland Street, Erie, PA. The event is FREE and is held in conjunction with Erie Safe Boating Day. All boaters (power/sail) are welcome. Head Coach John T Reilly of Gannon University will conduct three sessions of basketball camp this summer. Sessions will be held June 9-13, June 23-27 and August 4-8. His coaching staff, area high school coaches and several of his players will serve as camp instructors. The sessions are designed as teaching camps that emphasize the fundamentals of the game of basketball. The camps are for students in Grades 3-10.

The eMarketing Learning Center at eBizITPA will hold a roundtable titled Aligning Marketing and IT for Success from 4 pm to 5:30 pm on June 18.

The Erie Summer Festival of the Arts will be held June 27-29 at Liberty Park.

There will be a Rust Belt Bloggers Summit on July 11-12 in Erie. People from Youngstown, Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other area cities will be attendance to discuss economic development issues in the region.

The Manufacturers’ Association and Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority annual Roar on the Shore motorcycle rally will be held July 17-20, 2008. While downtown Erie serves as the hub of the rally, related events take place throughout the city and region. Most notably, two outdoor concerts featuring major artists will be held Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, at Liberty Park along Presque Isle Bay.
