A driver, traveling on Route 8 near Wattsburg, hauling 10,000 gallons of gas lost control of his truck. It rolled over and burst into flames. The smoke could be seen for miles.Holy cow was there a lot of smoke. I’d almost bet you could see it from almost anywhere in Erie County. A couple of witnesses to the accident pulled the driver from the cab.
The Community Blood Bank is extending hours for the first time since 2006 to give people a chance to come in and give blood this Saturday. The Community Blood Bank will take donors from 9am to 3pm Saturday to combat one of the most severe shortage in years. The last time hours were extended was in August 2006 in response to the shooting of two New York State Police Troopers by Ralph “Bucky” Phillips. Saturday June 14th is both Flag Day and World Blood Donor Day and the Community Blood Bank is celebrating with All American Flag of Erie. Everyone this week will receive a miniature American flag and donors all week can enter to win a 20-foot commercial grade flagpole and flag with installation worth about $1000. On Saturday there will be food from On Deck Bar and Grill. “It is as bad as I’ve ever seen it,” Said Dan Desrochers Director of Marketing and Community Relations at the blood bank, “Please show your true colors (especially your RED) by giving blood.” All donors are strongly encouraged to donate at the Community Blood Bank, 2646 Peach Street. Community Blood Bank is open from 9-6 Monday through Friday and until 7:30pm Tuesday night and Saturday 9 am - 12:30 pm. Photo ID required.
Beginning Monday, June 16, construction at the LECOM Medical Fitness and Wellness Center will close the commuter bridge between the wellness center and Millcreek Community Hospital. Traffic will not have access to the hospital from West 54th Street for seven weeks during bridge construction. Visitors to MCH must enter from the hospital entrance on Peach Street. For visitor convenience, additional parking is available along Peach Street between the wellness center and the hospital.

Safe Harbor Behavioral Health serves the greater Erie area with mental health treatment for adults and children. It has been recognized as a Model Program in the development and implementation of Crisis Services and the delivery of innovative outpatient services to individuals and families. They do have programs where it isn’t necessary to have health insurance.
The Summit is Erie’s newest concert venue. It’s located on Oliver Road across from Family First Sports Park.
The Cactus Cuties will sing the national anthem for the Manufacturers’ Association of Northwest Pennsylvania 103rd Annual Event on Wednesday June 18. They are the featured act for the fourth annual National Anthem Project taking place today in Washington, DC. The Cactus Cuties are Baylee Barrett, 14; Blaire Elbert, 11; Andi Kitten, 11; and Madeline Powell, 9.

Gaming analyst Justin Sebastiano of Morgan Joseph put out a buy rating on MTR Gaming Group saying the market was undervaluing company assets such as Presque Isle Downs and Casino in Erie.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced the selection of Derek “Rick” DePietro as federal security director (FSD) for Buffalo Niagara International Airport. DePietro began his career with TSA in 2003 as transportation security manager at Erie International Airport. Since January 2007, DePietro has served as the assistant federal security director (AFSD) for screening at Pittsburgh International Airport and six spoke airports. Prior to that, he was assistant federal security director for screening at Erie International Airport and four spoke airports.
Erie PA native James C Barnes recently had his first book published, “Why we have so many American problems: And what we can do about them.” He asserts that America’s two-party political system only serves to divide the country: “We have been divided and conquered by two gangs with opposing opinions on how to run the country. Both, when in power, cost us dearly, give us little, and make a mess of everything they touch,” he writes.
The Erie SeaWolves used three pitchers and shut out the Portland Sea Dogs 1-0 in the rubber game of a three-game set at Jerry Uht Park on Thursday night. The SeaWolves will host the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in a three-game series beginning on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park…7:05 First Pitch. RHP Andrew Kown (4-6, 4.68 ERA) gets the start for Erie.
Nice story in The Washington Post on Erie, PA native Kathy Jenkins. Jenkins coaches girls lacrosse at St Stephen’s/St Agnes. Her record at the school is 501-41-9.

The Gem City Jazz Ensemble will be entertaining outside at the Colony Plaza this Friday evening - June 13. Stop over and do some evening shopping, browse the galleries (part of the Erie Art Museum’s Twelve Galleries, One Night event), or just come for the live jazz. Gallery Night, which is organized by the Erie Art Museum, features FREE public touring of 12 local galleries and gallery activities, on Friday June 13 from 7 to 10 pm. Galleries that will be participating are Accents By The Bay, Allen Stoneware Gallery, Artworks Gallery and Clayspace Studio, Bayfront Gallery, Geary’s Studio 7, Glass Growers Gallery, Kada Gallery, Kuhn’s Framing and Gift Gallery, Ralph Miller Jewelers and Gallery, Relish Inc. Studio and Gallery, Urraro Gallery and the galleries at the Erie Art Museum. EMTA’s Bayliner will be providing FREE shuttle transportation from 7 to 10:30 pm. Starting on June 13 Theatre 145, located at 145 West 11th St in Erie, is going to rock like it never rocked before when “Remembering Janis” premieres. “Remembering Janis” honors one of the 1960’s greatest singers, Janis Joplin, through the memories of one of the Haight-Ashbury hippies who knew Janis from the time she arrived in San Francisco until her death in 1970. Gannon University Writers’ Workshops 2008 are for students Grades 4-12. Erie’s gay, lesbian bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community will come together the weekend of June 28-29 to celebrate Pride 2008 with a picnic, march/rally, and social opportunities. Festivities get underway Saturday, June 28, with the Pride Erie Picnic at Rotary Pavilion, Beach 7 at Presque Isle State Park. The Pride Picnic runs from 1-6 pm with food being served from 2-4 pm. The Pride March will step off from The Zone Dance Club at 1 pm. Sunday, June 29, with the Pride Rally beginning in Perry Square at 2 pm. The Erie Philharmonic’s Get Your Phil At Noon Summer Music Series FREE concerts will be held July 8 and August 12 at noon in front of the Warner Theatre on State Street. The free lunch-hour ensemble concerts, designed to provide “music while you munch,” will feature a Philharmonic string quartet fully amplified and seating for the outdoor event. WQLN radio will broadcast live from the event this year.
There will be a Rust Belt Bloggers Summit on July 11-12 in Erie. People from Youngstown, Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other area cities will be attendance to discuss economic development issues in the region.

The 2008 City of Erie Junior Golf Program is open to boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 17. Entry fee is $7 per person. The number of entrants will determine the number of divisions. Tournament 1 is at J C Martin Golf Course, West 38th St and Shunpike Rd (next to Erie Zoo), on Wednesday, July 23 at 8 am. The Erie Lions Club Save an Eye City vs County All-Star football game will be held July 25 at Erie Veterans Memorial Stadium, 26th and State Streets. The major purpose of the Save An Eye Game is to raise money to provide free eye care to low income children.

The Gannon University ShakeXperience Theater Camp will be held Monday, July 28 through Saturday, August 2. This one-week resident high school (through graduation) theater camp is taught by members of Gannon’s theater program and qualified professionals. Classes are conducted in Shakespeare, text analysis, stage movement, rehearsal and performance. Workshops are offered in stage combat, period dance, and music. Includes a public matinee performance of CYMBELINE as part of the Shakespeare SummerNights outdoor threatre festival. Cost: $99 (includes room, board, and instruction fee).
