Erie Photo of the Week: Wayne Memorial

This week’s Erie Photo of the week is of the Wayne Memorial.

General Anthony Wayne (1746-1796) served in the Revolutionary War. He was buried at Fort Presque Isle, at the site of the Wayne Blockhouse.

The text on the plaque reads:

In Rememberance of

Appointed in 1792, on Washington’s
Recommendation, general-in-chief
of the U.S. Army

In 1794, vanquished the indian tribes of the
northwest, ensuring the safe settlement of
northwestern Pennsylvania and northern Ohio.
Died at Erie, PA., Dec. 15, 1796
